To wonder why so many people are hostile to 'woke' things?

malificent7 · 01/02/2020 18:46

Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

Woke for me means trendy and unthinking/ non critical
This exactly

Deathgrip · 01/02/2020 19:31

In it’s original form - having one’s eyes opened to the pervasive nature of racism in our society - then “woke” is a fantastic thing to be.

That need for awareness of systemic oppression has been extended to a variety of issues that simply do not warrant it. It’s become synonymous with those who cry bigotry where no bigotry exists. These are people who’ve lost track of what oppression and hate really are.

Forgivenandsetfree · 01/02/2020 19:31

@AutumnRose1 yes! I was reading something the other day, a guy was saying that an advertisement (CK Everyone) was a joke because everyone in it was, and I quote, 'skinny and white'
he was then told to shut up as he himself was white and 'you don't hear black people complain there aren't enough white people in adverts.... I mean, wtaf?

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 19:38

Deathgrip “ That need for awareness of systemic oppression has been extended to a variety of issues that simply do not warrant it. It’s become synonymous with those who cry bigotry where no bigotry exists. These are people who’ve lost track of what oppression and hate really are.”

Thank you putting that so much better than I could!

'Woke' seems to be about people who are superficially spouting stuff about how other people should behave. But there is no depth to their reasoning and they don't actually consider or change their own behaviour. Telling others to protect the environment but then being mass consumers themselves for instance. It's all done to be seen as superior to others. I seriously doubt some of these people are even bothered about the issues they talk about and just do it to be seen as doing it.

MimiLaRue · 01/02/2020 19:52

@user totally agree.
Of course being aware of racism and social injustices are important. But the people who usually do all the lecturing about being "woke" are often often not the people who are actually being oppressed. Its often the trendy crowd posturing and peacocking on social media who have lived with monetary privilege their whole lives, have never done a damn thing for their community but are "armchair warriors" who think theyre "woke" for simply re-tweeting something they heard once.

Fantababy · 01/02/2020 19:56

It's grammatically incorrect. Why not 'awake'?

MimiLaRue · 01/02/2020 19:57

"It is derived from the African-American Vernacular English expression "stay woke".

Its an African American term

bilbodog · 01/02/2020 19:59

Five years ago this term didnt exist - its bullshit! Just means whatever happens to be the in way of thinking atm. Thats why most people dont care about it!!!!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 01/02/2020 20:00

Utterly boring term.

WooMaWang · 01/02/2020 20:00

In what way is doing yoga and liking animals in any way related to social (in)justice?

If anything, that claim in the OP is a great example of what is wrong with contemporary woke groupthink.

ulvie · 01/02/2020 20:02

Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc

I thought it was because they were preaching to everyone else about the environment, whilst travelling round the world in private jets and helicopters.

GFJoe · 01/02/2020 20:02

Woke does not employ critical thinking and is hugely intolerant to anyone whose beliefs do not fit in with their narrow ideology. What exactly is there to like about that? 🤔

2020GoingForward · 01/02/2020 20:03

I read a thread in FWR which introduced me to to the concept of purity sprials -www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3809276-Purity-spirals based on article - unherd.com/2020/01/cast-out-how-knitting-fell-into-a-purity-spiral/

I think my problem with woke things is it seems to be a bit of a purity-spiral - it's continually demonstrate your ethical credentials and it's never enough.

RHTawneyonabus · 01/02/2020 20:04

I think this summed It up for me. unherd.com/2020/01/cast-out-how-knitting-fell-into-a-purity-spiral/

RHTawneyonabus · 01/02/2020 20:04

X-post!

Iamagree · 01/02/2020 20:05

Because it helps the right wing media to ridicule and hence to dismiss the concerns and challenge of anyone who is not part of the establishment or a white, mainstream (yep, privileged) group. It's the new "Political correctness" slur to put down those who challenge the status quo

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:06

Because when you 're accustomed to privilege, equality looks like oppression.

I mean it's ok for women to talk about sexism.
BAME people to talk about racism.

But when things actually start to change, well, that's going to upset some people who just can't handle change.

I am glad things are changing.

It's good to see different representation on TV and in the media. I wonder how many people on here complain about Dr Who or there being more diversity on TV shows.

PanicAndRun · 01/02/2020 20:07

Because it's lost all meaning.
Because it's full of mental gymnastics with people falling over themselves to be seen as woke. So much so they refuse to use/accept any logic and reject science.
Because it's become a platform for the "I'm better than you" people.
Because you can never be woke enough.
Because I can acknowledge and care about a lot of shit without needing an identifier or having to subscribe to the religion "du jour".

Surplus2requirements · 01/02/2020 20:08

I don't see it much here on MN but on another forum I frequent (think largely men 50+ years) 'woke' is used as a one size fits all derogatory and dismissive put down to any progressive thinking including concern about man made climate change and even challenging overt racism.

It's sort of equivalent to millennials dismissing any opinion of the over 50's with 'Ok Boomer' except it can be used against any age group that dare to challenge actual bigotry and prejudice.

Similarly 'virtue signalling' as a put down has been used by the far right for years.

Endofthedays · 01/02/2020 20:09

Woke people are the status quo.

ulvie · 01/02/2020 20:09

We've got one at work. Constantly going on about women's rights and pointing out that absolutely everything is sexist. I don't think she realises how much credibility she loses by picking up things that actually aren't. It's actually frustrating for me, as an older feminist, as she just comes across as petty.

She also seems to think that women's rights are a new thing. I asked her what she thought of the new Emmeline Pankhurst statute and she just looked at me blankly (we live in Manchester) and said "oh I think I've heard of her". FFS.

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2020 20:10

Woke to me is an insult meaning try hard and no sincerity. I don't use it for situations when people genuinely care about stuff.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:11

Interesting article in the Guardian

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/30/anti-woke-backlash-liberalism-laurence-fox

"Ultimately, Laurence Fox and others like him don’t want to hear about “white privilege” because it makes visible what has always been hidden – their power – and forces them to justify it. Power is nice, and liberating, and those who have it tend not to give it up without a fight.

Progressives need to wise up to the fact that they are losing this argument and decide what they are going to do in response. If they don’t, they may soon find that the future they always assumed was theirs is being made without them. Or as Florian Philippot, senior strategist to Marine Le Pen, tweeted after Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton: “Their world is collapsing. Ours is being built."

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/02/2020 20:12

Because it seems, in my experience at least, often to be virtue signalling do as I say not necessarily as I do bollocks
