To wonder why so many people are hostile to 'woke' things?

malificent7 · 01/02/2020 18:46

Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

“ So here's people criticising the police as 'woke' for having an LGBT liasion officer - I wonder if they have used their critical thinking skills to think about why they might need one?”

I admit, I would not have been concerned about this if not for the Harry Miller situation, but in the context of all the reporting of non-crimes, it concerns me.

Sorry, I’m so involved in all this I forget to share context.

So twenty years ago, I’d have thought nothing of it, but now I can be done for a non crime that goes on my DBS check if I state scientific facts on social media, I feel Herts Police doing this is part of the problem.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:59

“ I would hate to go back to the old days. Things have been getting better.”

This is interesting because I think things were improving and then went downhill suddenly and speedily.

Halloweenbabyy · 01/02/2020 21:01

Using the word “Woke” In sentences/ statements sounds ridiculous. Anyone who proclaims to be “woke” on social media gets an instant eye roll from me 🤭

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 01/02/2020 21:02

@AutumnRose1 can you explain the background of the tweet, is it because the LGB has dropped the T?

Whatsername177 · 01/02/2020 21:06

@AutumnRose1 I completely agree. Calling a meeting is just virtue signalling - ticking a box whilst actually making a person from a BME background feel singled out and diffetent

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/02/2020 21:11

MimiLaRue
"It is derived from the African-American Vernacular English expression "stay woke".
Its an African American term

But but but

In that case isn't it cultural appropriation for people who are not African-American to use it? That wouldn't be very woke of them., would it?

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:13

Gu excellent username! Yes, it’s because they wanted to drop the T.

Whatsername yes, it’s othering.

One woman with a strong accent was asked if she got enough help with her English. She was raised bilingual and her English is probably better than anyone else in the room. She was upset and angry.

It wasn’t just BME, but they called in teams and asked if all the endless diversity “needs” were being met.

One gay guy said to me afterwards “should I have said I’m sick of John and his super tight t shirts because his pecs are so distracting”.

And I said, “well yes, but I’m straight and they distract me too”.

🤷🏻‍♀️ What is the point of this shit?

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:14

“ In that case isn't it cultural appropriation for people who are not African-American to use it? That wouldn't be very woke of them., would it?”

Yes, I’ve seen this complaint made too. I don’t use the word in real life, I’d have the police arrive for a non crime....

hamstersarse · 01/02/2020 21:14

@AutumnRose1

I agree it’s more than being liked on social media, it’s being liked in general, gaining social status by looking all woke

I have been a feminist for over 30 years and I’ve never felt comfortable in ‘women leader’ type groups. It enhances division rather than reduces it. My ideal is the where we don’t even have to talk about identity politics, everyone is judged on their individualism only

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:15

hamstersarse “ My ideal is the where we don’t even have to talk about identity politics, everyone is judged on their individualism only”

Yes and until about 2010, I think we were getting there.

PlanDeRaccordement · 01/02/2020 21:15

Woke to me is a term for the virtue signalling smug narrow minded who are perpetually offended on behalf of others and compete for gold in the oppression Olympics of identity politics.

They also seem to think they are the first generation to fight injustice and care about the environment and that all preceding generations did nothing at all.

It’s a pejorative nick name for a reason.

user1470132907 · 01/02/2020 21:15

Because being ‘woke’ seems to be about publicly shaming someone who may have err-ed very mildly, with zero recognition of that person’s contribution to advancing the rights of persecuted groups as a whole, and while taking zero actual action oneself to improve anything for anyone beside oneself (usually via self-promotion). ‘Woke’ people don’t truly care about humanity; they just want to look more virtuous than the rest of it.

BingoLittlesUncle · 01/02/2020 21:16

"Woke" = holier than thou.

silentpool · 01/02/2020 21:17

I find the woke brigade to be fascists dressed up as hippies. I think "you do you", as a concept works well and irritates less people.

Whatsername177 · 01/02/2020 21:17

There is no point. A truly diverse work place would offer the same support to all and discipline/sack anyone who was bigoted. The good old fashioned 'open door policy'woild be enough to ensure everyone felt heard.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:17

Let’s not forget the profit motive. There are a lot of jobs in these divisions, money for writing articles etc

I think of the things that came out in post election analysis is how annoyed people were to be described as white working class, as if their ethnic minority colleagues were separate to them in some way. But sorry, I cba to find a source!

ferntwist · 01/02/2020 21:18

OP the backlash against ‘woke’ began when the woke folk started to tell us that women could have penises and if we didn’t believe them we were hateful bigots. Even big fat hairy rapists with willies can be women now, if you’re woke. Enough.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/02/2020 21:19

I don't know, sometimes it's a good cause, and sometimes it's the virtue bandwagon.

ferntwist · 01/02/2020 21:19

As in, we’ve had enough. I’ve now woken up to woke.

tobee · 01/02/2020 21:21

Did op ever come back? Or is this one of those threads? Hmm

hamstersarse · 01/02/2020 21:22

I think Douglas Murray calls it the ‘Retired St George’ syndrome

St George was out there slaying all the dragons, being the hero. Then he had to retire. And had nothing to fight.

And people are like that today, they’ve nothing major to fight for, our lives are pretty easy in comparison to the past.

So they get all tied up with this social justice, taking on causes that make them look the hero. And social media allows the gloat and instant feedback.

Maybe we all need a bit of disaster and adversity in our lives 😅

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:24

I think OP is probably looking at the info.

OP is a regular and has good chats.

2020GoingForward · 01/02/2020 21:27

From the ayishat-akanbi article doolallylala posted earlier.

Wokeness has shifted from its primary focus, which is about developing “consciousness and awareness” of social justice issues, to “performing activism”, which is mostly concerned with policing, moralising and silencing people who may struggle with the discourse surrounding this conversation.

It's something that's seem to have got in this purity spiral of performing activism and then widen it coverage to many other areas - and I think that's the problem.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 21:30

I also blame wokeness for this idea that you can’t write about anything outside your experience or your ancestors

I pitched an English historical novel to an agent who wanted to know why I was interested when it was not “your” history. Gave the me rage. That’s racism. He thinks he’s woke. (Yes, we talked about it properly).
