To wonder why so many people are hostile to 'woke' things?

Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

I fully behind this particularly as the child of immigrants.

aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?

but ime the people who tend to shout the loudest re "wokeness" have a platform & privilege.

hamstersarse · 01/02/2020 20:38

Its so true that one of the major annoyances of the woke is that they use the bingo card approach across every situation and in groups that have nothing to do with them (other than they can use them to look virtuous), desperately searching out a ‘wrong’ and trying to catch people out.

It’s tedious

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:38

There is this definition

"Being "Woke" is what happens when instead of taking one blue pill, you down the entire bottle."

ulvie · 01/02/2020 20:39

*Being “woke” has come to mean not considering the consequences of ideals.

It means the erosion of women’s rights when we still haven’t achieved full equality..
It means the working poor being accused of racism over being terrified of losing their jobs.

It means not really considering that generational poverty may be more significant to people’s lives than their identities.*

@Purpleartichoke

Well said.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:40

OP

Here’s Hertfordshire police showing how woke they are. You might like that, of curse. Just saying, this an example of a problem for me because I want police time spent on crime.

They are the trendy-lefty, champagne socialists of the 2020s.

TBF - the people who tend to shout the loudest against 'wokeness' also have a platform and privilege.

Looking at you, Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan is a twat & I cannot stand him.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:42

Is there a word that is opposite to virtue signaller?

Because there are definitely people on this thread doing this about LGBT issues right now and signalling to others their views on LGBT stuff.

There is a huge difference to being aware of and fighting social injustice and being professionally offended where no offence is intent or indeed apparent. Twisting words for an apparent agenda, usually on social media where they can show just how wonderful they are. Looking For Likes.

hamstersarse · 01/02/2020 20:45

Looking for likes

That’s exactly it

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:46

Twisting words for an apparent agenda, usually on social media where they can show just how wonderful they are

A characteristic shared by anti-woke people as well.

lazylinguist · 01/02/2020 20:46

This is impossible to unpick unless there is a consensus on what constitutes wokeness. To many people (including me), woke now means right-on, virtue-signalling koolaid swallowing. I'm well aware that isn't what it used to mean, but the meanings of modern buzzwords can shift very rapidly. I wouldn't describe someone as woke for being anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-disablist etc - those are just basic characteristics a normal decent person.

See Katie Hopkins......

hamstersarse · 01/02/2020 20:47

I think ITV might be regretting their wokeness to the Alostair Stewart tweet

He’s clearly not a racist but they capitulated to the baying crowd of jeering social justice warriors on Twitter.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 01/02/2020 20:49

Yes this.

doolallylala · 01/02/2020 20:49

You can be irritated by how woke has been hijacked & despise Piers & KH. It's not an either or.

HermioneWeasley · 01/02/2020 20:50

It isn’t about fighting actual injustice, it’s about virtue signalling and policing language. It’s empty, pointless, purity spirals.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:50

One of the replies from that tweet about the police

"I like the gesture but I don't understand why police are doing this. Are gay people scared to go to the police? Are police seen as homophobic? It's just very mysterious to me."

I think that kind of comment comes from someone who hasn't got a clue about the experience someone from the LGBT community has with the police

So here's people criticising the police as 'woke' for having an LGBT liasion officer - I wonder if they have used their critical thinking skills to think about why they might need one?

ulvie · 01/02/2020 20:50

Piers definitely a bell end (but I rather enjoy how butt hurt he is about Meghan - even though I also dislike her immensely).

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus

Completely agree. I've actually been reading the Daily Mail just for his columns. Old jilted Piers.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:51

hamstersarse but looking for likes is about social media

It’s a much more serious matter when you get into the workplace and either staying silent or refusing to participate in certain things can get you marked as a troublemaker

E.g. I wanted to get out of some kind of meeting where my work was checking if BME people were having their needs met. I actually consider the existence if the meeting to be offensive to me, as if I have particular needs in the workplace. But what’s the point of getting into that conversation?

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:54

Another Tweet, but fairly typical of what’s being directed at LGB alliance at the moment

twitter.com/RustyGoodDalek1/status/1223685800891691017

It’s as if detail and nuance has vanished.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:58

I am worried.
I am worried because I think this country has achieved a lot with its changes and the Equality Act. I am glad that we are seeing more diversity out there and that people are more aware of stuff. I would hate to go back to the old days. Things have been getting better.

And yet there does seem to be a backlash.

And I don't know where that will end.
And what that will mean for certain groups.
