To wonder why so many people are hostile to 'woke' things?

malificent7 · 01/02/2020 18:46

Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

I wonder how many people on here complain about Dr Who

I've mainly see people complaining about the standard of the scipts - most people were excited or at least intrigued by female Doctor. T

Though having seen Ruth - alternative Doctor last week - who acted pretty much everyone bar Captian Jack of the screen last week I'm wondering if there are other problems as well now.

An article in the Guardian about some Muslims protesting about LGBT teaching in schools said something along the lines of, these Muslims are only saying homophobic things as the Muslims are pushing back against right wing oppressors.

No discussion of complicated and important questions like how to balance the opposing interests of various groups, because that would screw up your woke theory.

Another example was Jo Swindon telling women to not vote Lib Dem if they didn't believe that transwomen were real women. I was planning to vote Lib Dem, but I took her advice and didn't! To me, it was one of many issues to weigh up when deciding how to vote, but Swindon only wanted my vote if I was completely for her transgender policies.

This sense that any doubt or disagreement means you must be a bigot and against me.

It's sadly leading many people not not vote for left wing parties, because they feel alienated from woke policies.

Davincitoad · 01/02/2020 20:13

Everything I have read that is ‘woke’ is also bollocks....

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:14

I asked her what she thought of the new Emmeline Pankhurst statute

No doubt if the suffragette movement had been doing its stuff nowadays, Piers Morgan would have been frothing about them, writing angry columns in the Daily Mail and the Government would have put them on the terrorist list and anyone who was being radicalised would be taken in under the Prevent strategy.

Lordfrontpaw · 01/02/2020 20:14

Woke is just what we used to call ‘right on’, or to give them their correct name ‘twats’

FamilyOfAliens · 01/02/2020 20:14

Woke remainers just accuse leavers of racism. Period. They refuse to discuss it beyond repeating the term 'racist'

Really? You’ve met enough people who’ve done this to categorise them all in this way? Hmm

doolallylala · 01/02/2020 20:15

I like H&M but totally get @Whatsername177 example. My entire family wore saris at my best friends wedding as we were instructed to do & taken on shopping trips to decide colours etc. A white "woke" person would be offended on behalf of my best friends Indian family regardless of their actual opinions. They are othering them which is apparently what they are against.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:16

Everything I have read that is ‘woke’ is also bollocks

What - more representation of BAME people in adverts
BAME stories being told on TV

Timeforchachachanges · 01/02/2020 20:17

Because woke people are so bloody worthy. I’ve been vegetarian for 30+ years, I practise yoga, I work with some of the most vulnerable people in society, I have lived overseas and have a circle of friends from all races and all walks of life and I come from a family that has proportionally as many homosexual than heterosexual members! If you met me for the first few times you probably wouldn’t learn about any of that because I don’t crow on about it. I suspect there are many like me. Yet these ‘woke’ people want to patronise, to shout their beliefs from the rooftops and it makes me wonder are they protesting too much? I see people - not colour or sexuality or physical impairment - but to me it’s almost like the superficials are the determiners for the ‘woke’ and I fundamentally disagree with that.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:17

A white "woke" person would be offended on behalf of my best friends Indian family regardless of their actual opinions

Would they now?

Or are you just stereotyping?

But I forget - it's ok for certain groups to stereotype but not others?

Who is the one know who can't do critical thinking?

ulvie · 01/02/2020 20:18

*Progressives need to wise up to the fact that they are losing this argument and decide what they are going to do in response. If they don’t, they may soon find that the future they always assumed was theirs is being made without them. Or as Florian Philippot, senior strategist to Marine Le Pen, tweeted after Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton: “Their world is collapsing. Ours is being built."
*
Thank you for that chomalungma. It's very true.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:19

“This sense that any doubt or disagreement means you must be a bigot and against me.“

Oh what the hell, I can’t resist 😂

AudacityOfHope · 01/02/2020 20:23

Actually the example of MM and Harry is useful: they consider themselves woke but are not arsed enough to change their behaviour and, you know, not hunt animals, or burn their own personal hole in the ozone layer through constant private jet use.

But they feel virtuous and that's enough for them to consider themselves fully woke to what's 'right'.

@chomalungma

According to this, Piers Morgan's ancestors were up to exactly that.

What I find incredibly ironic is that some people who complain about 'woke' people being intolerant of different views are also incredibly intolerant of the views of other people - and they resort to name calling as well.

Intolerance comes from both extremes - with groups absolutely entrenched in their views.

doolallylala · 01/02/2020 20:29

Another example I've seen on MN was a thread re Soleimani's death. A poster I believe from Syria who had suffered under Assad's regime was happy that he was dead. She was irritated at being told by posters who have never visited the ME that things would be worse now.

WeSavedSallySally · 01/02/2020 20:31

I don't think people are hostile. It's when people announce it, make big proclamations to preach then go and do something different.

Most people have morals and standard and do good stuff they just doubt tell everyone about it...

Lordfrontpaw · 01/02/2020 20:33

The woke often seem so ignorant though - saying things to appear ‘good’. The truly ‘good’ don’t bang on about it (I worked for a charity so have met a few really ‘good people’ and many big-gob no actions).

Purpleartichoke · 01/02/2020 20:35

Being “woke” has come to mean not considering the consequences of ideals.

It means the erosion of women’s rights when we still haven’t achieved full equality..
It means the working poor being accused of racism over being terrified of losing their jobs.

It means not really considering that generational poverty may be more significant to people’s lives than their identities.

I was just having this conversation with my 10 year old. We absolutely need to be fighting for everyone to have happy productive lives, but we need to listen to all parties.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 20:35

choma “ Or are you just stereotyping?”

Well hang on. We’re talking about woke folk, they are a very specific set of people, right down to if you say “here is a group of experts on Meissen porcelain”. It’s not a stereotype, it’s a group of people with specific characteristics.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:35

he woke often seem so ignorant though

Many people seem ignorant TBH.

It's not a trait exclusive to 'woke' people.

chomalungma · 01/02/2020 20:36

We’re talking about woke folk

Can you define 'woke' folk?

Because the dictionary definition is
"alert to injustice in society, especially racism."

Do you have a different definition?
