Crusty bread, real butter and jam, as a rare treat 😋

I cant remember the last time I had jam! I went to the shop for croissants and jam but they didn't have any croissants so I got crusty bread and apricot jam.

It was delicious.

Yabu about it being a rare treat. I have that almost every breakfast!

Camomila · 01/02/2020 14:02

I had a baby Monday lunchtime, that afternoon, they gave me toast with tiny hotel butter and a variety of jams (I had orange marmalade on mine). It was amazing!

Binterested · 01/02/2020 14:02

Agree OP although due to the scourge of sourdough everywhere it can be hard to find a nice old fashioned white loaf. And I don’t always want crusty (yy to it being hard on the gums).

So here is my question: where have all the cottage loaves gone ? They used to be the default yummy white bread and you could eat the mini loaf from the top on the way home from the bakery. We need them back. Maybe Brexit will fix this for us

BaronessBomburst · 01/02/2020 14:08

A question for the marmalade lovers: fine cut, or thick cut?
I personally can never decide. Grin

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 01/02/2020 14:16

Oh my word. I've not had coffee with cream for ages! Years. It's never offered here now, is it?

midlifecrash · 01/02/2020 14:38

sour cherry jam in particular

katy1213 · 01/02/2020 14:51

Almost impossible to buy good bread around here. Nice sourdough, easy enough, from Waitrose or Gail's or markets. But old-fashioned, crusty white English bread - what's happened to it?

IntermittentParps · 01/02/2020 14:58

If by 'here' you mean the UK, as I'm assuming, this place in Derbyshire does (or anyway did when I was last there, about 18 months ago). It's such a treat. thepekoecafe.co.uk/menu/

We're so lucky where we live. As well big stores like Sainsbury's, Aldi, Iceland etc we've got independent butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, cheese shop and bakers.

ultrablue · 01/02/2020 15:09

A full English with black pudding followed with a slice of toast and blackcurrant jam ( has to be blackcurrant x

DoctorTwo · 01/02/2020 15:18

Congratulations @Camomila and good luck with the new one.

Breakfast for me today was toasted oat and ancient grain bread allowed to go cold before being slathered with a thick coating of butter and an even thicker layer of Ardennes Pate.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 01/02/2020 15:26

Thick stodgy toast with proper butter and raspberry jam with pips.

Avocado can fuck off, especially for breakfast Envy (not envy)

iklboo · 01/02/2020 15:53

Smashed avocado is Satan's smegma 🤢

mrsbyers · 01/02/2020 16:31

Two toast , one with butter and extra sea salt , one with butter and bonne maman berries and cherries is my favourite

missyB1 · 01/02/2020 16:32

It would have to be soda bread and marmalade not jam.

LaurieMarlow · 01/02/2020 16:48

It is divine OP. But more of a snack for me (with coffee at 11).

Best breakfasts

Boiled egg and toast (I have this most days Grin)

Or, at weekends

Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs
Bagel with bacon and cream cheese

Sonichu · 01/02/2020 16:54

Butter and jam together is yuk!

happyhappyme · 01/02/2020 16:58

Smashed avocado is Satan's smegma

Not a fan then? Grin

I love it.

Fried eggs done with chilli oil are lovely, especially if I can get them right so the white is cooked and the yolk is very runny.

LaReinedOrange · 01/02/2020 16:58

YABU. There's no nutrition in that breakfast what so ever.

I prefer porridge made with oat milk, cinnamon, peanut butter, banana and honey.

Delicious and nutritious

FredaFrogspawn · 01/02/2020 16:59

Apricot jam is the sun.

Bipbopbee · 01/02/2020 17:02

Toasted crumpets with butter and marmite or peanut butter.
Or even better the marmite peanut butter spread!

otterhound · 01/02/2020 17:07

Why a rare treat?
Toast or fresh, warm baguette, butter and home made jam/jelly.
Or thick cut, dark marmalade

But really, its proper dry cure bacon, fried bread (fried in dripping) eggs and field mushrooms.
Wash down with good leaf tea!

Elle7rose · 01/02/2020 17:08

Any type of white bread with jam (but it has to be strawberry!) is yummy. There's no need for it to be a rare treat though.

Other breakfasts of similar deliciousness but which really should be a rare treat:

  • Scrambled egg on toast (with or without smoked salmon)
  • Poached egg and spinach on a bagel
  • Peanut butter or nutella on crumpets
  • Pancakes with syrup
  • Waffles with toffee sauce
AdaColeman · 01/02/2020 17:10

Cream cheese and black cherry jam in croissants is the best breakfast, or pandoro with apricot jam is a close second, both served with hot chocolate.

PatellarTendonitis · 01/02/2020 17:11

Porridge is a glorified bowl of sick. Boak!

Pizza, now that's breakfast!
