Crusty bread, real butter and jam, as a rare treat 😋

I cant remember the last time I had jam! I went to the shop for croissants and jam but they didn't have any croissants so I got crusty bread and apricot jam.

It was delicious.

My local Baker in Newark, always baked his bread daily, and there was nothing better, than picking up my fresh Bloomer on the way home from work.
The smell and squidgy texture still slightly warm, was heaven to cut the ' knob end 'as we called it, which was the crusty start. Mr. Fletcher, before he opened his little shop, use to cycle with all the fresh bread orders and deliver them, in all weathers, until he got to old!
Elysian days, I wish I could have just another slice, with...butter and Lemon Curd!

Aglet · 02/02/2020 18:15

Sainsbury sells a white loaf with burnt crust. Scrummy!. My fave brekky is a toasted sausage sarnie with branston pickle.

iklboo · 02/02/2020 18:30

This might sound grim but I love cheap sausage butties with piccalilli on. Especially the chunky sort.

LimpLettice · 02/02/2020 18:34

Oh dear god. I have gestational diabetes and can't eat either white bread or jam right now. Both of which I adore and miss. Soft inside, crisp crust, slathered in salty butter with sour cherry or homemade raspberry jam, or super sharp homemade lemon curd...I would kill for that for breakfast instead of my ten thousandth egg. Thread is torture!

Binting · 02/02/2020 19:00

I love fresh crusty bread and jam, or toast and marmalade, only thing is it usually says to keep them in the fridge once opened so they’re too cold for me unless I take them out of the fridge overnight. How do people store their jams and marmalade’s?

joesev · 02/02/2020 19:03

smashed avo on rye bread...... bread and jam would leave me bloated
Does rye bread not bloat you?
*am interested

Suebreo · 02/02/2020 19:04

Good coffee and two slices of multigrain toast with butter and marmalade heaven 😋

joesev · 02/02/2020 19:06

I never store jams, pickles or ketchup in the fridge. They are all preserves , preserved originally to lengthen the life of fruit etc when they were in season and plentiful.

MadamShazam · 02/02/2020 19:14

Bacon sandwich, loads of butter, a bit of Ketchup, and fresh coffee. Perfect.

musketeers123 · 02/02/2020 19:17

Seeded brown bread toasted, with scrambled eggs & smoked salmon. Best breakfast ever !!! Even better when my OH makes it ... really want some now...

Mumgonenuts2020 · 02/02/2020 19:17

Like bring jolidwyveverydsy, low sugar raspberry jam if you want to be part good too, dairy free flora and crusty brown bread 💙👍

Mumgonenuts2020 · 02/02/2020 19:18

Like being holiday everyday 😄

beingmum39 · 02/02/2020 19:32

Toast, proper salted butter and strawberry jam... That's my holiday breakfast ..
On a normal day it's porridge with a sprinkle of demerea sugar and a chopped banana Wink

monstiebags · 02/02/2020 19:35

are the people eating all these avocados aware that thousands of bees are killed in order to propagate them - since when was such a weird concoction a great British brekky?

NellyTimes · 02/02/2020 19:39

Thick, toasted granary bread or walnut bread, loads of butter and lashings of honey. Nobody else has mentioned honey on toast I don't think, but it's fucking marvellous.

janj2301 · 02/02/2020 19:53

Love raspberry jam with pips. Supermarkets no longer stock it so j have to drive to tiptree and buy 12 jars at a time

josbd · 02/02/2020 20:13

Asda bakery, crusty tiger bread! Just like it used to be when I was a kid. I promise!

Sickofpineneedles · 02/02/2020 20:15

Jam and decent bread sounds delicious although for me it has to be rasberry and not a cheap one but one with proper chunks of fruit.

The best breakfast I've had is probably after the home birth of my third we had bacon sandwiches Grin

OlaEliza · 02/02/2020 20:32

@iklboo My favourite sausages are Richmond's 😳

My all-time favourite breakfast is a bacon sandwich with ketchup.

@OlaEliza - Richmond's are the best.

GenevaMaybe · 02/02/2020 21:27

@monstiebags sadly there is very very little food available that has a blameless supply chain

Toomuchtrouble4me · 02/02/2020 21:34

EVERYBODY knows that the best breakfast is last nights left over takeaway curry with a glass of Buck’s Fizz.

It’s a fairly recent faddy thing - last couple of years - advocado must me ’smashed’ and not ‘mashed’ with a poached egg on rye or sourdough or some other poncy bread - Very on trend.

Cup of tea and a fag otherwise known as the 'Blackpool breakfast', is an excellent precursor to all other breakfasts.

I do enjoy a good breakfast, make breakfast burritos quite a bit a the weekends, but a good brunch with any fried left-over mash or roast potatoes, bacon and a fried egg with either chilli sauce or malt vinegar liberally applied. Black pudding wise, after living in Co. Cork for five years Clonakilty black pudding is the best, it has barley in which makes it a little more toothsome than a pure blood pudding. Also white pudding.

But yes OP, crusty bread, (I always hollow out the middle and eat just the crust) with cold salted butter and apricot jam is bloody lovely. And apricot jam is the best for this treatment. Although strawberry with scones or croissants.

Weekday breakfasts tend to be boiled eggs with sourdough toast, avocados on sourdough with poached eggs, a cheese omelette or ham, sliced tomatoes and sourdough with olive oil. Maybe some fruit.

Always an earl grey tea and a coffee after.

Steak and eggs is an excellent breakfast treat. Occasionally smoked fish, but not salmon, smoked mackerel on toast or bloaters are best for breakfast, salmon is too oily and fey.

I take breakfast quite seriously!
