Yes 56% of people didn't vote for the Conservatives but the Conservatives got the most votes

You might want to brush up your maths and deductive reasoning.

You tried to say they only won because they got the most seats, which just isn't true

It is true. HTH.

MonnaLIza · 31/01/2020 13:49

Another settled EU citizen here, with British other half and British kids: enjoy your celebration folks and thank you for having made my life (and with me about 3 million EU citzs in the Uk and 1.2 million Brits in the EU) a lot harder in the past three and a half years. I hope you have a nice party. Enjoy your "victory" and let's see if you are still laughing in, say, three years' time.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 31/01/2020 13:50

Is he starting posts on discussion boards crowing that he's 'won'?

No

Then he's completely different to the OP who people are responding to.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 13:50

@Alsohuman 56% of people voted for a variety of other parties. There's nothing wrong with my maths.
The Conservatives got more votes and more seats than any other party.

BonnesVacances · 31/01/2020 13:52
  • "You need to extend your social groups then don't you?"

No. Leavers just need to come up with one good reason for Brexit.

Just one would do.*

^^ This. I'm bored of being told we're just not listening or we're existing in an echo chamber. I've been trying to find a reason to hold onto since the referendum. I wouldn't still be looking, if there was one. And if a single one does exist, it shouldn't be so hard to find. Though I'd be hoping for more than one reason for this utter shit show and division. But maybe I'm too demanding!

Alsohuman · 31/01/2020 13:52

The Conservatives got more votes and more seats than any other party

Indeed. They didn’t get the majority of the votes.

Oulu · 31/01/2020 13:52

My sister is very intelligent, educated to PhD level, generally very tolerant and quite passionate about things like climate change. But she seriously put forward the view that Brexit is exactly like the Millennium bug, i.e. something where there were all sorts of prophecies of doom that didn't come true. I asked her how they are comparable - after all, the Millennium bug was a fully identified single issue that was eminently fixable with a lot of work by IT people which duly happened, whereas Brexit is a million times more complex and making it work would need all sorts of trade deals in place over which we have no control and the government have done very little to prepare in any event. Strangely, she couldn't answer.

So yes, you can indeed find utter stupidity amongst the supposedly intelligent. The fact that someone is intellectually bright doesn't stop them having massive blind spots and logic failures.

CremeEggThief · 31/01/2020 13:53

Lol Hons.😆🙄

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 13:53

@Alsohuman I didn't say they got the majority of votes, I said they got the most votes.

TeddyIsaHe · 31/01/2020 13:55

It’s not very sporting of me, but I am a bit looking forward to saying “I told you so” in 11 months time.

So far the only positive of Brexit I can see.

Alsohuman · 31/01/2020 13:56

I didn't say they got the majority of votes, I said they got the most votes

That’s the same thing!

Happy brexit day
SueEllenMishke · 31/01/2020 13:56

Well SueEllenMishke I'm glad you're proud of your hubby and he's influenced your feelings on the EU. Perhaps he would like to come on here himself and mansplain to all us laydeez how wrong we are and finally explain what the fuck the point of Brexit is?

Ahhhh i forgot. You can't mention your husband on MN without the word 'mansplaining' being raised. Why would he want to do that? He respects other people and their opinion and wouldn't want to 'mansplain' to anyone about any topic.
And he didn't influence me. I'm also capable of my own thoughts, opinions and of making my own decisions. You don't know how i voted.

I am proud of him. He's been called racist, stupid, ignorant.... among others but doesn't rise to it. If the result had gone the other way he would have been disappointed but would not have been bitter.

And maybe apologise for depriving me of something that was very precious to me and my kids in the name of his precious fucking opinion?
Why is your opinion more valid? Tell me that?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 13:58

@Alsohuman the Conservatives got 13,000,000 votes. Labour got 10,000,000. Everyone else got less. I don't think I'm the one with the maths issue.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 13:59

Getting the most votes is different to getting most of the votes, is that's what you're struggling with Hmm

TooGood2BeTrue · 31/01/2020 14:00

@SueElleMishke What were you husband's reason for voting to leave?

ThePlantsitter · 31/01/2020 14:00

By voting to remain I wasn't depriving you of something you had that was precious to you.

If you could have explained WHY it was for the greater good - like taxes - I might have grudgingly accepted it. But nobody has.

If you voted to leave you are directly responsible for taking a set of rights away from me and my children. There are all sorts of other things like making me live in a closed minded, isolationist prison but ultimately the one concrete thing you have done is stolen from me and I have not stolen from you.

That's why.

Plus if you have your own thoughts and opinions back them up with something other than your clever hubby's opinions.

Alsohuman · 31/01/2020 14:02

The number of votes against the Tories exceeded the number for them, ergo they didn’t get most of the votes or the majority, they got fewer than the other parties combined. The end.

TeddyIsaHe · 31/01/2020 14:02

Honestly though, in 3 years not one single person has given a good and coherent (not racist) reason as to why leaving the EU will be beneficial. Not once.

Blah blah blah no immigrants, red tape, something something laws. Errrr what?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 14:04

@Alsohuman which is exactly why I said getting the most votes is different to getting most of the votes.

Villanomme · 31/01/2020 14:05

Teddy catch up on the beeb news. There were chatting to people ahead of some pub celebration being filmed this evening. I didn't hear one thing to convince me they had the faintest idea what they knew what they were voting for.

SueEllenMishke · 31/01/2020 14:09

@SueElleMishke What were you husband's reason for voting to leave

So I can be accused of allowing him to 'mansplain' again. Nah .....

There were his reasons and his decisions.

I just get very fed up of the whole 'ignorant, stupid, racist' argument.
It's lazy and largely untrue. While that may describe some leave voters it will also describe some remain voters. Just voting remain doesn't make you clever and superior.

I voted remain but I have been disgusted with the way other remain voters have behaved. I know people who voted leave and who voted remain. We managed to co-exist by bring respectful of other people's views.

Alsohuman · 31/01/2020 14:09

You said nothing of the sort GiveHerHellFromUs

HollysBush · 31/01/2020 14:11

I'm glad the Tories have got Brexit done and shown those whiners in the EU who's boss.
But Brexit's not done yet. Tomorrow the tricky part starts.

QuizzlyBear · 31/01/2020 14:11

My father in law who's lost his job because his employer has relocated its head office to mainland Europe, my own father whose business contracts with European countries have been scuppered, my children who can no longer study abroad - they're all desperately excited.

We'll be drinking tonight, but drowning our sorrows at the sight of our once amazing, global country becoming an inward looking, xenophobic little island filled with bigots.

Cheers!

TeddyIsaHe · 31/01/2020 14:11

@SueEllenMishke people are called stupid, racist and ignorant because they are unable to give a decent reason. As you have just proven. Once again. For the billionth time. Not a single leaver is capable. It would be quite amusing if it wasn’t so sad.
