To think that a lot of genuinely beautiful people ruin themselves with plastic surgery etc?

As a self confessed utterly ugly bug I just can't understand it... There are truly beautiful women out there who do it to themselves time and time again and end up almost caricatures of themselves.

Just a thought after seeing the latest pics of Catherine Zeta Jones who was incredibly gorgeous. Not a caricature yet, but perhaps in danger of going there.

The problem is that Botox and lip filler are cheap, while a good facelift is expensive.

Very true.

Gonnagetgoing · 06/09/2021 18:21

@Classica

It's fillers that are people's undoing. People who've had stuff done and look good have had facelifts. Filler has a cumulative effect and that's why faces end up looking so puffy and strange.
But even a facelift on the body of a much older woman unless eg you’re Joan Collins can be a bit of a shock.

What’s wrong in embracing your wrinkles and ageing skin?! Cue lots of MNers who say they won’t ever do this!

Seriously I know a few women my age who don’t do Botox etc but use fairly good skincare and look great.

Classica · 06/09/2021 18:53

Oh I don't think any of it's necessary just that if you do go down that route fillers might ultimately not have the desired effect!

I'm a skincare nut so am all for that. Plus I think if someone keeps fit and does yoga/pilates it keeps them lithe and that always gives a youthful impression. Better some wrinkles but great posture and movement than an ironed face but shuffling along.

So I am the creator behind a well known skin supplement. All I will say is eat fish or avocados. The French say the face or the figure, tis true. No wrinkles on my face, no surgery or fillers. My skin,? 40, my body? All of my 55 years due to ill health (steroids, bereavement, blah blah). Buy a pretty lipstick, have a facial the rest is for TV personalities. If my husband didn't agree he will be under the patio.

KittenKong · 06/09/2021 20:17

I don’t eat fish... I do love avocados though.

Siameasy · 06/09/2021 20:21

My DH is scared of that pillowy look and also the orange look.
Another look I’m not keen on which seems to go hand in hand with looking like a budget Kardashian is sporting beige leggings and top combo so that you look naked at first sight. Terrifying; camels’ toes on the loose.

Siameasy · 06/09/2021 20:54

PS I’m gutted - for anyone who knows her, Nadia Comaneci has had so much work done she now looks unrecognisable.

Unsure1983 · 06/09/2021 23:00

@LipstickLou you sound awesome! Your comment brightened up my day no end Grin

Not sure if this name has been mentioned, but DONNA VERSACE. Classic case of being ruined by surgery. She could have aged beautifully imo.

COPPER3 · 07/09/2021 07:02

Apologies...DONATELLA VERSACE.

MsTSwift · 07/09/2021 07:04

Dh sat next to her on a plane a few years ago. He said she looked …extraordinary. He is now anti anything and freaks if I even muse about Botox which loads of my friends are getting now.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/09/2021 07:36

I just had a google of Carol Vorderman and she looks a lot more pneumatic than I remember her! I'm not entirely sure she's done that "naturally".
Her photos vary a lot on how good she looks too.

If tv and film people want to do that to themselves to keep themselves in work for longer then it's kind of understandable - but I really object when they say they've had nothing done but look significantly different.

Renee Zellweger falls into that category for me - I still don't know whether or not it was "just" weightloss but her face changed so much I doubt it!

everythingthelighttouches · 07/09/2021 08:03

It’s the fillers.

I was shocked to see Kristin Davis (Charlotte from Sex and the City).

She is what I would call a classically beautiful woman but what has she done?! Shock

everythingthelighttouches · 07/09/2021 08:07

I honest thought she was one of the most beautiful women on the big or small screen, it is so sad she felt she had to do this.

I can't see the problem with Kristen Davies?Confused

I can.

Maybe its an attention-seeking strategy?

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/09/2021 12:10

Oh no. Kristin Davies used to be so beautiful, what a shame.

TableFlowerss · 07/09/2021 12:23

Kirstin Davies looks like a different woman.

Courtney Cox was and CZJ all great bone structure, beautiful women who would have aged well yet all of them are barely recognisable now.

SpamThief · 07/09/2021 12:33

I suppose it's hard for us to imagine what it's like to age as a woman in Hollywood. By the time you're 35 you no longer get the top roles. So the pressure to have 'just a tweak' must be so tempting. I suppose with Kristin Davis she thought 'shit, everyone's going to be comparing me to how I looked in the last SATC film 10 years ago, so if I get these fillers that might help...'

You’re right but you’d think they would learn from those that have gone through the same thought process and then end up looking like different people.

I agree that Hollywood is hard on women, but there are plenty of women in their 40s, 50s and above still regularly working. The likes of Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Tilda Swinton, Susan Sarandon and many others. None of these women have had excessive 'work' done.

The reality is that if you relied on your youthful beauty to get roles, plastic surgery isn't going to turn back the clock. There is an endless stream of hot young women in Hollywood. Not saying that the pressure to have 'work' done isn't huge, but I don't think it helps with getting work beyond some 'maintenance' work. Hollywood is a brutal place, especially for women.

I think these women think that the duck face and permanently shocked look is something that's going to happen to others, and that they'll just look 'refreshed' and 15 years younger. Sadly, it rarely turns out that way.

DottyHarmer · 07/09/2021 13:22

The women on your list (julianne Moore, Susan Sarandon etc) do indeed look great, but they have all had work.

Additionally (know this for a FACT -ha!) they all wear hair “fillers” to give volume.

Celebrities are very disingenuous about their appearance and all claim that you get wrinkle-free, sag-free skin and voluminous hair at 55 by drinking water and doing a bit of Pilates.

One thing I wonder…. Do men (rock stars) have to dye their chest hair? That must be onerous!

Yes, I know they've all had 'work' done (maybe not Tilda?) but they still look like beautiful older versions of themselves, not that sad plastic look of some of the women we discussed above.

My point is that getting 'work' done in itself isn't going to extend your career or buy back your youthful beauty. Hollywood is incredibly competitive, especially for women.

DottyHarmer · 07/09/2021 13:32

Is it that people don’t know when to stop? A good facelift is obviously a godsend (I need one!) but then it’s the lips, the eyes, the brow lift, the sparkly teeth…. And soon everyone starts to look very weird indeed. Although perhaps if you move in such circles you are the odd one out if you aren’t plasticised.

Btw, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban! I hope they don’t too near some candles or else they’ll melt!
