To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

What are the options then if no vertical blinds or voiles/nets?

PLease tell me- I am happy to consider.

IvinghoeBeacon · 18/01/2020 18:21

I just have normal curtains, but then I no longer live in a house where the pavement runs outside the sitting room window (believe me people can’t help peering in - and I don’t blame them, it’s just habit - but I did want privacy) and I’m not trying to block out light during the day. I hated having nets though (I realise now that they were “voiles” based on previous posts) and I didn’t want something I couldn’t remove when I felt like it like those big stickers

Nat6999 · 18/01/2020 18:26

I hate vertical blinds, my mum has voiles up at the moment & is thinking of swapping to vertical blinds, I hope I have talked her out of them. I'm thinking of having wooden venetian blinds up at mine, they look nice with curtains.

willothewispa · 18/01/2020 18:31

We have vertical blinds but I'm not a fan, they are better than nets though.

Baaaahhhhh · 18/01/2020 18:34

Are voile panels nets? If so, I am doomed, as I replaced the revolting paper venetians we had in our conservatory and replaced them with white voile panels with tie tops. I think they look very relaxing in the summer sun, blowing in the breeze, and providing shade, very continental.

Peoplearemiserable · 18/01/2020 19:01

Vertical blinds do look awful but collect far less dust than horizontal ones. You can’t mock them if you have net curtains though! They are way worse!

teraculum29 · 18/01/2020 19:21

So surprised that people doesnt like nets, I love them, ther are very practical, and you can wash them, and if you bored after 2-3 monts you can put another set on, different design etc.
I do like my privacy, and they are still getting through day light in.

DickDewy · 18/01/2020 19:27

Ime, nets are only used by really old people.

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 19:28

Lots of anti old people stuff on here. Bit depressing really.

What is the alternative?

I would love a solution.

Russellbrandshair · 18/01/2020 19:34

It’s not anti- old people to say something looks dated. Nets do look horribly dated, sorry but they do.

Besides OP keeps saying blinds look “middle aged” you could equally argue what’s wrong with being middle aged? 🤷‍♀️

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 19:39

Nothing wrong with being middle aged- I hope to be so one day myself!

Was pointing out how ludicrous the whole thing about old people was

Well I had nets when I was less than 33yo, so by all means add that to your range of experience of people who have nets Grin. If I didn’t actually like them does that mean they don’t count? Because I’m happy to help bring the average age down.

Ponoka7 · 18/01/2020 20:02

I got voiles when I was in my late twenties. They had a script pattern on and we're perfect for my Victorian large windowed house.

I had verticals, but now have a combination of voiles (as pictured) and roller blinds.

I wish we didn't have neighbours that liked to look in, but they do, so I need privacy, which verticals don't give. I sometimes walk around with just knickers on.

I'm also a messy eater and don't want to be on show.
