To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

I've always thought they were hideous. Mind you, I dislike most blinds of any sort.

ChicCroissant · 17/01/2020 21:42

I prefer vertical blinds to venetians, venetians are total dust traps!

Net curtains - haven't seen those for decades, are they on the way back?!

FiveShelties · 17/01/2020 21:47

Net curtains are horrible. Surely they are not coming back.

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2020 21:47

Love mine. I've got heavily textured silver light/heat reflecting ones over a bifold door. They really help in the summer when it's too bright and hot.
Where the front of the house has a pavement very close, I've got cream patterned one. They let all the light through even when fully closed. When angled, we can see out but no one can see in.
Nets wouldn't work at all.

BeanTownNancy · 17/01/2020 21:48

Our neighbours recently redecorated and put them on all of the windows. Hate it hate it hate it. Makes their house look like an office.
There are nice ones around - these aren't those.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 17/01/2020 21:49

Can't bear them but better than nothing as we live in rented accommodation.

Looking forward to buying our own house one day and putting up net curtains at the window.

(Disclaimer: I once paid to have vertical blinds installed in a garage that had been converted into a crash room/rumpus room of a house we once owned. It was a practical solution. They were a lovely cream colour with a pattern on them which reflected the light.)

Ooh underneaththeash I've been looking at those Allusion blinds but can't find out much about them. Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions? What do you think of them overall? I'm not a fan of vertical blinds but have a very wide bedroom window that I'm struggling to find any other blind to fit. I want them to act like net curtains during the day (sheer but giving privacy as we are very overlooked) and have a blackout-type quality at night. I don't want any other window coverings so they would need to block out the early morning light. You reckon the Allusion might fit the bill? Devil of a job to find anyone that stocks them so I can go and have a look. Also, I really don't want anything that flaps around too much and is noisy in a breeze as I keep the windows slightly open most of the time. Thank you! Sorry to hijack, although I'm not a fan of vertical blinds, if that counts!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/01/2020 21:49

Nets, and you're going on about blinds????

Ha ha ha ha Grin

Yellredder · 17/01/2020 21:50

Hideous items. Definitely office blinds.

speakout · 17/01/2020 21:50

Net curtains are horrible. Surely they are not coming back.

I have them- not net but a voile.
Took down the vertical blinds that were here when we moved in, not sure what other options we have. I need privacy. I don't want shutters or closed curtains, "net " or voiles seem a better option.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Rosehip345 · 17/01/2020 21:51

Yep vile, don’t know anyone below the age of 60 with them?
Then again I think nets are yuck too 🤷‍♀️

Lanaa · 17/01/2020 21:53

They don't look great but they're much better then the horizontal type (Venetian?) Someone down the road from here has got multi coloured ones. Alternate black and white stripes. They're truly awful.

namechangenewness · 17/01/2020 21:53

Nets and vertical blinds are horrid. Nets even more so. Venetian wins every time for me.

Redglitter · 17/01/2020 21:57

I put nets up

I'd have vertical blinds any day of the week. I cant believe someone with nets on their window would criticize blinds 🤭

Nets are absolutely horrible. So old fashioned

ChicCroissant · 17/01/2020 21:57

You'll need to buy some Reckitts dolly blue if you've got nets (ask your grandparents Grin )

I remember my parents replacing their nets with venetian blinds, which is how I know they are dust traps! Verticals for us, thanks.

TheRattleBag · 17/01/2020 21:58

I don't like vertical blinds.

They're especially hideous when paired with diamond leaded window panes..... too much going on!

TabbyMumz · 17/01/2020 21:58

Think the cats would make short work of voiles or nets

Fanniesyeraunt · 17/01/2020 21:59

Eek this reminds me of when we bought our new house, complete with vertical blinds and I sat and went on and on at lunch with my friends about how hideous/dated etc I think they are and couldn’t wait to tear them down. One friend went a bit quiet. When I went round a few weeks later I realised she had them in her living room....ooops!

daisypond · 17/01/2020 22:00

I’ve never ever seen these in houses. I didn’t know they existed.

ShinyGiratina · 17/01/2020 22:00

Vertical blinds remind me of the sixth form common room in the 90s. They did not last well...

We have sheer roller blinds. They let some light in and diffuse stronger light but stop the goldfish bowl effect. Some windows have a second blackout blind too.
Neat. Effective.

Fanniesyeraunt · 17/01/2020 22:00

And yes, sorry OP but you really shouldn’t criticise with - horror of horrors - nets! I thought they’d pretty much died out now!

doobiev · 17/01/2020 22:01

same as @daisypond it was only a MNs that I learnt they were a thing. I just don't understand why...

doobiev · 17/01/2020 22:01

on not a

doobiev · 17/01/2020 22:02

I have shutters

speakout · 17/01/2020 22:03

I have shutters

How does that work in daylight hours?
