To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

Cafe nets you mean? No I don't have those.

I put nets on all windows except bathroom and kitchen

doobiev · 18/01/2020 10:46

yes, didn't know their name. But don't you ever want to see out the windows during the day & then do you have additional curtains to block the light at night?

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 10:47

Odd isn't it? I think vertical blinds are old fashioned. Very 90's/80's

I associate net curtains with Edwardian to post-war. Sort of beyond old fashioned and more retro

i hate net curtains.
often filthy

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 10:50

You can see through net curtains but people cannot see in during the day. I do have proper thermal curtains on top- saves a fortune in heating bills and makes the room feel cosy.

Op I haven't met one person in the last 20 years under the age of 80 that has nets up.
I'd say they were more old fashioned that vertical blinds.

Wereallsquare · 18/01/2020 10:55

I agree with you 100%, OP. Looking at the blooming things now, and wishing I could afford to replace them with proper curtains.

doobiev · 18/01/2020 10:55

Well if they work for you....

purpledingyoverboard · 18/01/2020 10:56

God my mother had nets, really lacy and frilly. Always hated them. I'm in the vertical blinds gang, yes they are hideous but they give me a bit of privacy which I would rather have.

cannotmakemymindup · 18/01/2020 10:58

I love my nets. I'm in my early thirties and don't understand the hate for them. They get washed regularly, give me fantastic privacy during the day but let all the light in. Plus I can still see out without a weird shuttering effect. Plus I have a great floral design and are floor length.
I hate blinds! Dusty, officious looking things. Only allowance is a black out blind for evenings in a childs bedroom.

doobiev · 18/01/2020 11:02

shutters can open though

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 11:04

Holy shit I'm trendy:

Only looked at the pictures but plenty of nets- no vertical blinds!

I have a few thirty something friends who have put nets up

So, classifying curtain taste by age:

Elderly: nets

Middle aged: vertical blinds

Young adult; nets

Hercwasonaroll · 18/01/2020 11:07

Why do you need nets? No one gives a shit what you are doing in your house. In the evening shut the curtains.

Halloweenbabyy · 18/01/2020 11:07

@TabbyMumz my cats adore the net curtains. They lift them up and sit underneath them watching the birds (main reason I have them Blush)

Hercwasonaroll · 18/01/2020 11:08

A "great floral design" on nets.... Let's see!

Boireannachlaidir · 18/01/2020 11:10

I detest vertical blinds too. For some unfathomable reason they seem to be popular in many parts of Scotland. Especially up north.

Hate frilly fussy net curtains but you can get some lovely non patterned not bright white ones I can't recall their name Smile

PineappleDanish · 18/01/2020 11:10

Only looked at the pictures but plenty of nets- no vertical blinds!

That looks like exactly the sort of article I get paid for writing. Client - a manufacturer of net curtains - asks for 1500 words on why net curtains are so amazing and so contemporary and why everyone should have them. So I oblige. And all the time I'm thinking they're fugly, old-fashioned and something my granny would have.

Anyone can write anything online and it shouldn't be taken as gospel.

strawberry2017 · 18/01/2020 11:12

I got some lovely ones from Hillary's for our sun room when I moved in, bargain in the sale too.
Would rather these then net curtains. Net curtains are not timeless they are for old people's homes if you as me!

BruceAndNosh · 18/01/2020 11:14

@underneaththeash Those are the first nice vertical blinds I've ever seen. Nice choice.
Much nicer than all the other ones.

beautifulstranger101 · 18/01/2020 11:15

A "great floral design" on nets.... Let's see!

I'm imagining a 90 year old lady called Edna who looks through her nets whilst tutting at the young couple next door because they aren't married
Grin

TabbyMumz · 18/01/2020 11:18

"TabbyMumzmy cats adore the net curtains. They lift them up and sit underneath them watching the birds (main reason I have them)"
Mine climb up the windows when they think they can catch birds or flies so theyd be ripped to shreds in no time.

Or maybe Edna travelled the world, had numerous lovers and is remembering when she was young and in love....
