To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

bingbangbing · 17/01/2020 21:12

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

Nope. edna is a judgy old battle-axe Grin

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 11:38

Only if you have vertical blinds- she thinks they're terribly bourgeois 😎

Nets are different to voiles. Nets are the old fashioned, Nora Batty-type, thing. Voiles are better than nets, IMO.

Movinghouseatlast · 18/01/2020 11:43

Yes, heinous.

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 11:44

Voiles is the American word for nets

I have roller blinds upstairs, Roman blinds on the kitchen and vertical blinds on the front room window. We have a very large Edwardian house and people walk directly past our window. The blinds are practical and look absolutely fine with the rest of our decor, definitely nothing like an office as the front room is still full of original features and decorated tastefully to reflect this. We have a toddler so all the cords on all the blinds are cut and out of his reach.
I'm really amused at the irony of someone laughing about vertical blinds who has net curtains up Grin

cannotmakemymindup · 18/01/2020 12:08

Oy I promise I am not an Edna! Although I am not showing you my house as that's definitely outing.

This is just like the old fashioned name thread. Certain things go round in cycles. To me only my parents/people in there 50s etc think blinds look nicer than nets. Whereas I think abomination!

Mine are these www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/alvine-spets-net-curtains-1-pair-off-white-20112011/

And to the pp who said why not just have clear windows. I have a shared garden with my neighbours (who are our landlords) and you can otherwise directly see in to my home, when hanging up washing, with friends in the garden having tea in the warmer months. And I like to be able to walk around bra less etc in the day and not worry about people seeing me.

Missillusioned · 18/01/2020 12:23

I like to have sex during daylight hours in natural light. I also have big picture windows. I'm not keen on my old vertical blinds, but I'm currently struggling to find a suitable alternative

NoWordForFluffy · 18/01/2020 12:27

Nets aren't voiles. Nets are very old fashioned, fussy things. Voiles aren't!

I feel like mine are voiles after your explanation @NoWordForFluffy. Full length/height. No weird just to the windowsill length.

flirtygirl · 18/01/2020 12:31

They are hideous and have no place in someone's house who thinks they have a stylish home.

However if people like them, crack on but they are horrible to look at, not stylish, tasteful, elegant or any type of good word.

I think if people have them fine but kinda shows me they have bad taste if they installed them.

beautifulstranger101 · 18/01/2020 12:31

oh my god all those nets are hideous

user1497207191 · 18/01/2020 12:35

I put nets up.

Personally I find them even more hideous than vertical blinds, but each to their own. To my mind, nets are from the Ethel/Hilda era of nosey neighbours peering through, thinking no one could see them (of course in reality, if you're standing close to the nets, people outside can easily see you, especially if the sun is shining on them!). I have neither blinds nor nets at my windows - our front room is gloriously open for all to look in - I love a bright/airy room. I was brought up in a house with nets and they made the rooms dark and uninviting.

user1497207191 · 18/01/2020 12:37

If the sun is shining into your room, or you get to close to the windows, they can easily see you!

DMCWelshcakes · 18/01/2020 12:47

Hate vertical blinds - 80s office block.
Hate frilly nets - nonagenarian chic.
Festoon blinds - 80s faux Victorian.

Horizontal blinds - ok I suppose, depends on colour and material.
Roller blinds - have a few of these as they're blackout blinds.
Plain voile/not panel - I have one in a specific room in my house for security and temperature regulation.

Plain thermal curtains - love them. Smile

But my house isn't overlooked so I don't need nets/blinds everywhere. I think I could do with some shutters in the south facing sitting room though as the windows and patio doors are massive & it gets very hot in the summer. But the curtains probably do just as good a job.

cannotmakemymindup · 18/01/2020 12:56

I never have sunlight directly coming into our home due to the angle of the house at the front. Only through side windows and they are frosted.

I think this is also a thing to do with home ownership though. I would not spend the money to put up blinds in a home I am renting. I think those who want to show everyone there homes, probably live on a quiet street and don't have landlords living next door with the worry that they may judge you for what you are doing in your house.

flirtygirl · 18/01/2020 13:18

Op voiles and nets are different.

One is generally plain and inoffensive. (voile) And comes in a few fabrics like polyester, organza , tulle, linen etc
They are mostly plain but you now get sparkle ones, striped ones and kids ones with designs in them.

The other (nets) has a lacey type design and looks old fashioned in most homes... except for a brief respite when a few super trendy people had black nets that had a carefully designed pattern.

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 13:35

Lace curtains are frilly nets

Voile, is an American term that uk companies used to re-brand plain net curtains.

AlrightyyThen · 18/01/2020 13:56

I have them because I have cats 😂😂 all other window coverings have been duly destroyed

AlrightyyThen · 18/01/2020 13:57

(And it has to be the plastic kind that hang freely and don’t connect together at the bottom)

NoWordForFluffy · 18/01/2020 14:15

No, net curtains are frilly / with holey designs (the clue is in the name as nets have holes!).

venezia222 · 18/01/2020 14:32

I love how people bandy about terms like ‘tasteless’. Who is the arbiter of taste? Have what you like in your own house.

DickDewy · 18/01/2020 17:51

Nets/voiles are utterly terrible. No excuse for them.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/01/2020 17:54

Ever heard of rented properties that you can't alter, @DickDewy? You suit your name!

NoWordForFluffy · 18/01/2020 17:57

When you want to have something covering the window that is.
