To think vertical blinds are utterly insane?

Every house I've ever moved in to has had them.

Why?

They look like a 90's dentists waiting room.

Make your sitting room feel like an office.

Collect dust like anything,

Hideous strangulation hazard for children and animals.

Fall to bits if you put anything on the window.

Fall to bits if you brush past them...

Don't think they're cheap either!

Just why?

Hate them

BackyardChickens · 17/01/2020 23:57

Horrible. Agree.

Reginabambina · 18/01/2020 00:03

@TabbyMumz surely the only acceptable similar product is plantation shutters or sheer linen.

Katzia · 18/01/2020 01:56

Absolutely hate them. They are office blinds and have no place in a house. Utterly vile things.

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 06:06

Have to say that those horizontal shutter things are a bit Mrs Hinch..,

dives for cover

Yes I can’t stand them either, but I wouldn’t say net curtains were timeless either. To me they are very dated too!

NearlyGranny · 18/01/2020 06:24

Oh, linen sheers, yes please! Verticals belong in the kind of dental surgery waiting room you just want to walk right out of. I do get the controlling the light thing, honestly, but it's too high a price to pay for looking at the things the rest of the time.

Best blind I've played with lately is a super skinny Venetian completely sandwiched between two panes of glass in my DSis' back door. It has a sliding control on the side. It reminds me of the ones on the Indian-Pacific (train) back in the day. I don't know what happens if the cords ever break or the control jams, but I love that it never needs cleaning!

redcarbluecar · 18/01/2020 06:25

Ha ha. I like mine, but they replaced some horrible dusty horizontal blinds, and anything would feel better than those. I’ve embraced the ‘office’ feel by installing a water cooler and clocking in machine in the lounge. Can’t keep the visitors away.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 18/01/2020 06:47

I have beautiful vertical blinds. . No lethal plastic chains as they have individual weights, very contemporary patterns and not office like at all.

Each to their own

Newmetoday · 18/01/2020 07:09

I don’t like them either but Nets are worse. Horrible things. I honestly don’t understand people who have them. Old fashioned for the old fashioned

LesLavandes · 18/01/2020 07:11

Agree with previous poster.

You get cheap ones like you see at dentist and you get very very expensive ones.

Maybe most of you haven't seen these.

I live in a very modern designed house. Loads of floor to ceiling glass.

I need to keep heat out and bought specifically for this. They cost a fortune and look great in my home.

bingbangbing · 18/01/2020 07:20

Can we see them?

I've never seen ones that look nice.

Off to buy nets for my house in a bit Grin

Nets are grim and vertical blinds are shiteous abominations.

This.

They're just too office-like for me!

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 18/01/2020 08:06

Nets and vertical blinds are rotten. Although i did once see nets with a godzilla design, which really tickled me.

My ideal is to grow bushes by front garden wall so no one can really see in anyway but it's a bit of a long term plan.

pumpandthump · 18/01/2020 08:11

They are the definition of fugly!

They never look good, they ALWAYS look like a bad 80s office block.

purplelila2 · 18/01/2020 08:20

They look really dated and just plain nasty.

I work in an outdated office and they have these.
Modern offices don't use these!

Nasty ugly looking things

venezia222 · 18/01/2020 08:22

So people with huge patio doors or bifold in kitchens or kitchen/diners.......what do you suggest? Horizontal blinds are either on or off with no option to adjust the light, nets are grim, curtains block out all light and are horrible in a kitchen area anyway. They are either open or closed. Plantation shutters are expensive.

If you need privacy, ability to adjust the amount of light coming , abi,it’s tomopen and close the door easily in.....what’s the best option? What do people have?

venezia222 · 18/01/2020 08:23

Sorry ability to open that should say.

MissSmith1 · 18/01/2020 08:25

Shutters have wide borders so cut a lot of the light coming in, and the slats make it even less. maybe only suitable for southfacing windows.

venezia222 · 18/01/2020 08:27

The world and his wife has shutters round our way.

We do have some perfect fit Venetian blinds in another room but they are a pain to clean.

NearlyGranny · 18/01/2020 08:27

Oh, I have what I call my 'green screen'! We live on a corner so there is some coming and going, not a busy road at all, and we have hedges the developer planted. When we moved in to the place brand new, I cut privet and beech down to 30cm and now it makes a dense screen that I keep trimmed to just above adult eye height. When we sit down inside, the view is all leafy. No blinds, sheers or nets required.

BorneoBabe · 18/01/2020 08:28

Venetians look more clinical/office-y to me than vertical. And as mentioned, they get dirty so quickly and are a pain to clean.

You can get verticals in lots of different colours/materials now. And I like how easy it is to replace them.

BorneoBabe · 18/01/2020 08:29

Does anyone use privacy film? Any good?

PineappleDanish · 18/01/2020 08:36

Horrendous things. Yes they look like a cheaply decorated office on an anonymous industrial estate. Nets are equally horrendous.

I don't really care about people looking through the windows, If I did, I would use shutters, or roman blinds or something. Even venetian blinds are better than verticals.

Boxerbinky · 18/01/2020 08:37

Totally agree! I have lived with them in every feckin room in my 'new' house.. it's been 3 years now dh time to get them gone! I pine for my made to measure wooden horizontals of old and dream of wooden plantation shutters.

I feel that they offer no real privacy either, my window cleaner - who generally comes
Saturday morning when I'm still in bed - usually with my toddler bouncing on my dishevelled head, often waves at me between the gap the slight amount of wind has caused in the night ConfusedGrin.

It's one of those jobs that get pushed to the bottom of the list because they are adequate Hmm I actually hate them.
