Do you wear foundation everyday to work?

I recently started a grad scheme. This morning I realised I had run out of foundation. My reaction to the prospect of going into the office without it really surprised me.

Everyone my age wears make up.

Foundation and eye liner, plus mascara if time, are my every day items. I’m 41 but I’ve always considered foundation or tinted moisturiser a basic. I have olive skin and it looks very dull/ faded in winter.

mencken · 17/01/2020 12:50

scary sight in one of my local shops - what is possibly a very pretty girl CAKED with beige face paint, plus those joke eyebrows, stage makeup lashes and streaky orange fake tan on her hands.

She's probably mid twenties but looks like a halloween zombie. Makeup ages.

MrsWhites · 17/01/2020 12:50

Mid 30s here, I wear make up everyday, even if I’m just doing the school run.

Moisturiser, primer, foundation, under eye concealer, Laura mercier powder, bronzer, blush, mascara, eyebrow pencil and lipstick/tinted balm.

My skin is patchy and I have dark shadows under my eyes without make up which makes me very self conscious. I do have it down to about 5 min though!

Dixiechickonhols · 17/01/2020 12:50

Yes but didn’t until 40s.

milkjetmum · 17/01/2020 12:53

Yes everyday at work but almost never at home. I have quite a different work/home style. I think because I am a uni lecturer and want to give authoritative vibe at work, but at home I dress like my inner slobby PhD student. Grin

Appearance shouldn't matter of course but I think it does, especially for women in workplace unfortunately. And not just men judging but also other women. And you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't anyway.

Straycatstrut · 17/01/2020 12:56

I put a thin layer on/mascara/eyeliner for certain occasions, but I can't wait to scrub it all off after. Feel so much cleaner and fresher without painting and drawing on myself. Especially hate it on my forehead.

TheKitchenWitch · 17/01/2020 12:58

Don't work but wear a tinted bb cream every day which gives me a nice light coverage. Also eyeshadow and mascara, sometimes lipstick. I do this every day, regardless of where I'm going or what I'm doing. I'm 47.

BarbedBloom · 17/01/2020 12:59

I do. I always wear makeup to work. I will sometimes go out without it though. I enjoy playing around with makeup though

daisypond · 17/01/2020 13:01

No. I rarely wear makeup, and neither do the majority of younger women in my office on a daily basis. I’m in my 50s.

BohoBunney · 17/01/2020 13:02

I did when I was 23. I'm 32 now and BB cream is my usual go to, but not everyday (although I'm in between jobs right now) I find my skin no longer looks good in foundation. Even when I try to wear it on nights out, it still looks shit and I'm growing more comfortable in my own skin (or just caring less)

Straycatstrut · 17/01/2020 13:04

She probably feels top of the world with it on, when it reality I bet she looks absolutely gorgeous make up free.

I remember that "dare to bare" your face on FB ages ago -I hated it and didn't join in, I think it it was linked with cancer and bravery(?)- but I also couldn't believe how so much more stunning so many girls/women were without it on. It was like this hidden beauty.

It's all opinion though.

ActualHornist · 17/01/2020 13:06

Always.

I have worn foundation daily since I was 12, I’ve always had ‘bad’ skin - not necessarily blemished but rosacea and generally uneven skin tone.

I do keep it ‘natural’ with a sheer foundation and minimal other products, but I always wear it.

familydramalama · 17/01/2020 13:07

25 and never did even on my grad scheme. No one on my grad scheme did unless we went out!

Urkiddingright · 17/01/2020 13:13

Yes I do, only very lightly though so it’s nothing overly noticeable. My skin took a major tumble during my last pregnancy and has never really improved, I’m still breastfeeding so I think it’s hormones.

LBOCS2 · 17/01/2020 13:14

Nope. Never have done. Occasionally wear mascara and lipstick if I can be arsed but mostly not.

I only ever do a full face of makeup (including foundation) for an event. Takes maybe ten minutes?

VanGoghsDog · 17/01/2020 13:16

I think I might have worn foundation once, not sure.

But, no, I don't wear foundation to work, or anywhere. I use factor 50 sunblock every day. If I remember I splodge some cc cream on. But I often forget.

I'm 51.

Cynthie · 17/01/2020 13:16

Nope. I don't wear make up (the only exception being use of an eyebrow pencil, as without it my eyebrows are see-through).

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/01/2020 13:16

No, I've never used foundation in my life.

worriedabouthealth · 17/01/2020 13:18

At 18 in my very first job I was told off for not wearing make up
I was smart with clean hair I smiled and was polite her got a disciplinary for not wearing it and moved off front desk duty

Hillaire · 17/01/2020 13:19

No, I wear no make-up to work at all.

I don't wear any jewellery either, and don't even have pierced ears.

I maintain the principle that as long as my male colleagues believe their real face is good enough to be on display, then mine is too.

MulticolourMophead · 17/01/2020 13:20

I hardly ever wear make up. I have roseacea, but also my ex would make a song and dance if I wore any, so I got out of the habit.

I'm having to learn all over again about applying make up, but I plan to keep it light.

worriedabouthealth · 17/01/2020 13:20

It wasn’t mentioned at the interview or at any other point it was a requirement
The other girl wore a bit but wasn’t noticeable and she was lovely but had bad skin I pointed out she didn’t really look much different to me I was told it was the fact she had ‘made the effort’ and I hadn’t ? They said at my interview they recalled I’d had make up on (I hadn’t ! I don’t wear it as it gives me rashes) it was awful

ThebishopofBanterbury · 17/01/2020 13:25

Yep. In my 40s and wear every day work or not.

QuestionableMouse · 17/01/2020 13:32

Lots of people don't work in offices though. I'm 35 and never have.

userxx · 17/01/2020 13:45

Fuck yes, I'd scare the clients.
