AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

Apart from a few things that aren't dish washer safe (and some really nice glasses I'm extra careful with) everything just goes in the dishwasher. Why wouldn't you?

ShoesCoatBag · 11/01/2020 17:47

Everything but wooden stuff here. (And knives sharpened regularly).

redbullgivesyouflings · 11/01/2020 17:48

Everything but things that aren't dishwater safe.

lanbro · 11/01/2020 17:48

Everything unless it specifically says not to. I've recently moved into a house with a dishwasher and, because I bake and cook for a living, I'm literally saving hours every week by not washing up!

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 11/01/2020 17:48

We put everything in.

My parents don't put in chopping boards- wood so would warp. Or chopping knives as they think they would break. Or serving dishes. Or saucepans. So similar to your DH.

Quite frankly if something doesn't survive then it doesn't deserve to live in our house.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/01/2020 17:48

As long as it is safe to go in the dishwasher it goes in.

If your DH says no, then he does the washing up, no extra work for you

Brefugee · 11/01/2020 17:49

everything except the Chef's knives. That's it. Everything else goes in. If it doesn't go in the dishwasher, it's not allowed in my house

Zebrasinpyjamas · 11/01/2020 17:50

Everything goes in when it fits. Your second list items might not go in but only by because of space. I'd rather wash a couple of big items than leave things around, especially if they need a scrub to get clean.
I always put chopping boards in as I think it's more hygienic.

victoriashleigh · 11/01/2020 17:50

Everything except knives, fiancé is precious about his knives!

Grumpbum123 · 11/01/2020 17:50

Everything including the washing up bowl

JellyBook · 11/01/2020 17:51

Everything goes in the dishwasher, if anything isn’t dishwasher proof it doesn’t get used, or has no place in my home!

BlaueLagune · 11/01/2020 17:51

Most things but not the pans/knives that say they are better if they are handwashed, and glasses as I don't want them to break.

steff13 · 11/01/2020 17:51

I don't think you're supposed to put your knives in the dishwasher, but I do. I shove pretty much anything that will fit in there, with very few exceptions.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 11/01/2020 17:52

Everything that’ll fit in there and won’t melt!

trilbydoll · 11/01/2020 17:52

Everything. And if the dishwasher wrecks it, then our relationship wasn't meant to be.

Pans are better hand washed but dishwashing them doesn't ruin them overnight, it'll take about 10 years.

idril · 11/01/2020 17:52

Everything as long as there is room.

With pans, we sometimes wash them if there isn't room to put them in as they are so big and I'd rather wash one pan than the equivalent of number of plates that take up that room but if at all possible they go in.

MyCatScaresDogs · 11/01/2020 17:52

Everything that can - not wooden chopping boards, not the garlic crusher because I always seem to have to wash it by hand anyway, and stuff like cake tins/baking sheets and the Le Creuset. But all the normal stuff (pans, plates, knives, etc) goes in.

Fr0g · 11/01/2020 17:53

I've only got a small dishwasher, so often saucepans wont fit in, so I mostly do those by hand.
Pretty much everything else - including wooden spoons and spatulas; they wood has got a bit dark, but still perfectly useable, don't seem to come to any harm.
Long stemmed glasses dont really fit in.

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 17:53

Everything in this house goes in the dishwasher, regardless of whether it's 'suitable' or not. The exception is some vintage G&T balloon glasses that I have, which are very fragile glass.

For all my other pots, pans, knives, wooden chopping board etc - if it doesn't survive the dishwasher then it doesn't stay in my kitchen. I loathe washing up by hand.

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 17:54

Even my bamboo steamer goes in! The wood has darkened a bit but it still works well, hasn't split etc.

lazylinguist · 11/01/2020 17:54

No wooden things. Nothing with a glued-on handle. No non-stick pans. No good chopping knives. No flasks etc with seals. Everything else is fine.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 11/01/2020 17:54

We tend to run the dishwasher once a day, which means that there’s not usually room for big saucepans or oven trays as well as everything else (3 teenagers). So the pans get washed by hand.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/01/2020 17:54

same rules as laundry here....if it goes in and something tragic happens then just too bad.

Crystal glasses excepted....strictly hand wash only.

TooManyPaws · 11/01/2020 17:54

I'd put the kitchen sink in there if it fit!

My dad used to be precious like your husband but the ex was a chef who bunged just about everything in so I was happy for the backup that my dad really was an idiot about it. Having said that, dad did come to realise what a pernickety muppet he was about so many things before he died, having had to do things himself after mum went into a home.

Yes, your husband is being a pernickety muppet.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 11/01/2020 17:54

Absolutely everything goes in here, unless not dishwasher safe or wooden. Your husband is... odd.
