AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

But when I had babies I realised that the dishwasher is a giant steriliser so the bottles all went in.

IM0GEN · 11/01/2020 17:55

You need to stop doing your husbands way. If he wants to hand wash items, he needs to do it.

Getitwright · 11/01/2020 17:56

Anything and everything. You just need to buy pans with appropriate handles. When we were showing horses, I used to shove bits and stirrup irons in there as well! I’d rather be without a car than my dishwasher. Grin

needanewnamechange · 11/01/2020 17:57

My dh doesn't put cutlery in he washes by hand when he see me doing it he's like why Hmm.
And if I put a big casserole dish in he'll take that out and wash it but if he wants to do it by hand then fine but not me .

MummyDummyNow · 11/01/2020 17:57

Literally no point in having a dishwasher if you don't put half the stuff in! As PPs have said, if it gets wrecked in the dishwasher, it wasn't meant to be.

Canadianpancake · 11/01/2020 17:57

I'm with @AllYouGoodGoodPeople on this. If something doesn't survive the dishwasher then it's not worthy. I put wooden spoons etc in but not wooden chopping boards... So I don't actually own any wooden chopping boards 🤷

MummyDummyNow · 11/01/2020 17:58

Have never heard you're not meant to put knives in. Why?

Bluntness100 · 11/01/2020 17:58

I have no rules, i find it odd any one would.

I will wash large pans by hand, but if the dishwasher isn't full and has space, then I'll throw them in. The only things that don't go in are things that are not dishwasher safe.

Doilooklikeatourist · 11/01/2020 17:59

I put just about everything in ( only DH and I at home now as the DC are grown up )

Not the wooden chopping board though , but I think that’s about the only thing that won’t go in

Undies1990 · 11/01/2020 18:00

Everything goes in my dishwasher, even wooden spoons, the only exceptions are chopsticks and a delicate bowl from Japan.

DragonUdders · 11/01/2020 18:00

Dishwasher safe = bang it in.

I've found I don't buy non-dishwasher safe stuff now and I've recycled stuff that can't be dishwashed.

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2020 18:01

Everything goes in ours, I will hand wash a couple of things if they won’t fit in and they’re irritating me though...

We don’t have a wooden chopping board and it does full knives but sharpeners aren’t prohibitively expensive so I still stick them through.

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2020 18:02

dull knives.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/01/2020 18:02

I just buy everything dw safe.

You can buy knife sharpeners on amazon rather than hand wash them.

Weebitawks · 11/01/2020 18:04

Anything that fucking fits. Tell him to fuck off.

theSnuffster · 11/01/2020 18:04

I hand wash our water bottles and my travel mug because they're not dishwasher safe. The wok and big frying pan because they're too big. And my fancy hand painted gin glass. Oh and scissors. I think that's about it.

Thehop · 11/01/2020 18:04

What? This is crazy! Everything goes in.

We lost a wooden chopping board once but.....if it ain’t dishwasher safe it ain’t welcome here anyway.

DrivingMsCrazy · 11/01/2020 18:05

Everything. Life is too bloody short to piss about washing up when it can go in. I simply haven't bought "not dishwasher safe" items for about 15 years. Don't use wooden items. I have much better things to do with my time like sit on the sofa, reading MN and drinking wine

Soontobe60 · 11/01/2020 18:06

I'm the same as your DH I'm afraid. Pans, big bowls, chopping knives are hand washed. I do put cooking utensils in though. On the top tray between the mugs and glasses.

Ginkypig · 11/01/2020 18:07

As long as she still dishwasher safe it goes in.

If he doesn't want it done in the dishwasher that's fine but then he has to wash it without moaning.
If he doesn't want to do that then it goes in the dishwasher.

Alsohuman · 11/01/2020 18:09

Everything goes in unless it’s specifically not dishwasher safe. Apparently someone on MN puts her loo brush in. I draw the line there.

Topseyt · 11/01/2020 18:09

Everything goes in except non-stick pans because it tends to damage the non-stick coating. Nor do chef's knives with carbon steel blades as the abrasive detergent and powerful action of the jets tends to blunt them.

Chopping boards go in, though mine are plastic ones rather than wooden.

I think why buy a dog and bark yourself?

Damntheman · 11/01/2020 18:10

We do it your husband's way. But as PP have said. If he wants to do it that way and you don't then he can hand wash the things

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/01/2020 18:10

How does a dishwasher dull a knife?

I put everything that will fit in mine, but sometimes that means handwashing a saucepan because it takes up the space of 6 plates.

Horcrux · 11/01/2020 18:11

Does he wash the pots that don’t go in? Because I fucking wouldn’t be!! He can have a go all he likes, or do it himself.

Why doesn’t anyone put wooden stuff in?
