AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

Everything except best knives (x2), wooden boards and things unsuitable like nice glasses (try not to buy anymore). Garlic press, wooden spoons, mixing bowls and food processor parts all go in.

We have a slimline version so do two loads after a roast dinner. Pans and oven trays are put through a second load. Very dirty oven trays are left to soak with kid and rinsed lightly. I use enamel pans and they are like new after 20 years. Saucepans are metal and go in with lids. I move the shelves around when I do batch cooking so I can fit the stick out in.

We disagree about when to put the dishwasher on. I empty it at night so it's clear for breakfast dishes. OH put it on last thing so it's full of clean dishes first thing. He is wrong.

OH has just left a cup and side plate on top of an empty dishwasher so I may have to kill him dead (brb).

WatchingFromTheWings · 11/01/2020 18:12

We dish wash everything except wooden stuff.

actiongirl1978 · 11/01/2020 18:13

Everything including Watford Crystal and Le creuset casseroles. Wooden spoons, pans, oven trays (they fit nicely down the sides).

DH has very little to do with the washing processes. Our dishwasher often on 2 or 3 times a day if I'm doing lots of cooking.

hoxtonbabe · 11/01/2020 18:13

Everything except my baking tins and my fancy wine glasses.. heck if I could chuck my DS in it too I would as it would save me all the moaning at him about the puddles he leaves behind and mopping the floor after his shower

Amaretto · 11/01/2020 18:14

I don’t put the good kitchen knifes because they are damaged by the dishwasher.
We also avoid to put the pan because the rivet on the handle get corroded.
Anything wooden goes in (not the chopping board due to size but otherwise they would) and any other ustensiles.
I have too many dishes that aren’t dishwasherproof (yes I know....) so those of course can’t go but the others do.

Amaretto · 11/01/2020 18:16

Im curious for know what is your DH reasoning there.
We use to put everything in the dishwasher and what we now don’t out in was agreed with DH due to previous experience iyswim.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 11/01/2020 18:16

Everything goes in the dishwasher here, Crystal glasses and all. I mean everything from Plastic chopping boards to oven trays, to saucepans, cheese grater and garlic press.

If it’s not ok for the dishwasher, we don’t buy it.

Washing buy hand, just why? No

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 18:17

I put everything in. The only things that don't go in are a couple of great changing mugs and a tumbler with a light in it. All gifts because I don't buy things that can't go in there.

Yeah it wrecks wooden things eventually but they still last a few years. In fact my wooden chopping board has probably been going 10 years despite regular dishwasher trips!

eurochick · 11/01/2020 18:17

We stick in everything apart from some crystal glasses we got as a gift. Wooden spoons go in. They eventually split but as they cost next to nothing I can't get worked up about it. I probably wouldn't put in a good wooden chopping board but we don't have one.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 18:18

Heat changing

spanieleyes · 11/01/2020 18:18

Everything goes in apart from my best cutlery set ( the used-once-a-year rosewood and bronze ones!) No wooden chopping boards here!

Justontherightsideofnormal · 11/01/2020 18:19

Everything! Including plastic toys if needing a wash.

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2020 18:20

How does a dishwasher dull a knife?

It’s the temperature I think.

MAndSReadyMealForOne · 11/01/2020 18:22

Same as almost everyone else.

All but wooden bread boards, good kitchen knives, my Emma Bridgewater mugs (I think it shortens their lives - crazing glaze & loosening handles). I tend not to put non-stick pans in there either. Le Creuset and other cast iron cookware. Plus obviously non dishwasher safe items.

I do put saucepans in there and my huge stainless steel stock pots, if there’s room. Pet dishes and chew toys go in there too.

caoraich · 11/01/2020 18:23

Everything except the crystal glasses and the star wars heat changing mug that makes lightsabres appear.

Today I did a load comprising mainly duplo and bath toys 🤷🏼‍♀️

ferrier · 11/01/2020 18:24

Why would you not put the pans and bowls in? I'd far rather wash up plates and glasses if necessary than mucky pans and bowls. Your dh is just odd. What's he going to do if you put the pans in?

1forAll74 · 11/01/2020 18:26

I was at someones house the other week.and the man of the house had loaded the dishwasher there, he was about to start it off.and his wife rushed in from another room with a teaspoon in her hand, and said stop the machine, this teaspoon needs to go in.

I don't own a dishwasher, so found this idiotic, but funny as well.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/01/2020 18:26

I don’t put my decent glassware in, including fancy glass coffee cups. I don’t put my sharp knives in. Non stick pans don’t go in. That’s because the dishwasher isn’t recommended for these things. I only have a slimline dishwasher so big pans and mixing bowls don’t go in either.

fligglepige · 11/01/2020 18:27

Yeah everything goes in. It does wreck quite a lot of stuff though given time.

RyvitaBrevis · 11/01/2020 18:28

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo @Cornettoninja
Dishwashers basically work as little sandblasters, getting everything clean via tiny gritty particles going at high speed in all directions. It's the sandblasting effect that dulls the knife edge.

I don't put knives in the dishwasher personally, but it's not an issue if you're happy to sharpen your knives frequently and replace serrated ones regularly. I hate dull knives and it's true that cause more injuries (because the knife bounces off the surface instead of cutting through).

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 18:29

It dulls the knives but I have a good sharpener so it's fine. My wooden chopping board has survived many trips through the dishwasher with no ill effects. As has the IKEA wok, which despite not being 'safe' is absolutely fine.

Anything that doesn't survive gets replaced with something that will.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/01/2020 18:30

1forAll74 why was it idiotic?

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 11/01/2020 18:31

Our dishwasher is like this and has shelves on either side for knives, garlic crushers and spoons.

Also OH has the same star wars heat changing mug that makes lightsabres appear as caoraich so that doesn't go in. If I make the tea, I never use it. I have china tumblers for water.

AIBU to actually use my dishwasher
TreacherousPissFlap · 11/01/2020 18:32

Everything goes in, I actively don't buy things that can't go in.

Celticrose · 11/01/2020 18:34

Most things go in. I even put wooden spoons occasionally and no harm done as I now know that they are totally clean. I have even put in the shelves from the fridge. I don't put in good glass or China (not that the good China gets used much, last time was 2 years ago) Was given new mugs recently which can not go in dishwasher and though lovely are a pita to hand wash. I like it for chopping boards as they get hygienically clean. Also tea stains get removed. I wash some stuff that doesn't really fit properly but let them air dry.
