AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

We don’t put our chopping board in but it’s a big butcher’s block and it doesn’t fit.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/01/2020 21:17

I don’t put pans, wooden spoons/chopping boards, the best knives (other knives do though). And my Emma Bridgwater crockery doesn’t go in even if it does say dishwasher safe. But everything else does!

ByeMF · 11/01/2020 21:18

Everything. I don't care that the chopping board has warped. Used to drive nuts that exDH would refuse to put certain things in, would then wash said things but then leave them on the side. He never washed them properly either.
I didn't know about the knives either. That's why they blunt so quickly!

IncrediblySadToo · 12/01/2020 12:22

@LaurieMarlow

OTOH dishwashers DO ruin stuff and I LIKE my ‘stuff’ so I’m not sure I’ll actually wash much in it

What stuff do you think they ruin?

Because of how they clean (essentially sand blasting dishes) they ruin glass (goes cloudy), any print on things like mugs (they make it dull), wooden handles, wooden utensils (I like mine, they’re made from olive wood) & they discolour plastic.

Do you use crystal glasses/gold leaf porcelain the whole time?

🤣 God no, I’d willingly put anything like that in a dishwasher!!

My stuff has been through the dishwasher for years and I’ve never had a problem.

Print on mugs, seriously? Mine have been through thousands of times and haven’t been affected at all.

Have you actually used a dishwasher for any length of time?

Alsohuman · 12/01/2020 12:29

Nothing ruined here in over 20 years of dishwasher use.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2020 12:45

Another one who's never had anything ruined by a dishwasher and absolutely everything goes in here, glasses that have gone in several times a week for 20 years plus, non stick pans, the lot. If it doesn't go in, it doesn't get used.

Oblomov20 · 12/01/2020 13:46

Everything in. Or else what's the point?

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 12/01/2020 14:11

Everything except some crystal wine glasses and recently a couple of roasting tins that say hand wash only... although I’ll probably cave on them soon as we use them a lot and frankly I don’t think the dishwasher is much hotter than the scalding washing up water. Not really sure what damage it could do?

CastleCrasher · 12/01/2020 14:16

Everything goes in ours. Including crystal wine glasses, le cruset and chefs knives. Knives need sharpened more often but so far the glasses and ceramics are fine (glasses been washed like that for 15 years). Probably not as clean cuts as originally, but definitely not cloudy

PawPawNoodle · 12/01/2020 14:18

The pots and pans don't go in (cast iron or non-stick, neither of which should be in a dishwasher), anything wooden and thats it. Everything else is a bit shit so I couldn't give a monkey's if the dishwasher wrecks it.

BonnieSeptember · 12/01/2020 14:20

Everything apart from thinks that specifically aren't dishwasher safe (non stick frying pan and a few of those colour change mugs)

Even put in wooden chopping boards which I don't think you're supposed to because they warp but they're cheap enough I'll just get new ones I'd they get ruined 👍🏻

Ninkanink · 12/01/2020 14:21

Oh yes we wash our cast iron pans by hand.

MatildaTheCat · 12/01/2020 14:24

No point in putting in stuff that needs a scrub. It takes such a short time to clean a couple of pans I generally do them by hand.

I hate using long cycles when most items are barely dirty.

Polkadotties · 12/01/2020 14:29

Everything apart from posh knives and or cast iron pots

BlingLoving · 12/01/2020 14:34

The only time I dont put everything is space. So hardly ever put le criseut because they are so big and also easy to clean but otherwise, everything. We dont do sharp knives but only because if you turn your back for a second the dog is in there and j am terrified of her licking one. Next dishwasher will have those little trays high up for knives to avoid this issue. Ditto, cant adjust trays sufficiently for long stemmed wine glasses (often drink wine from a regular glass now!!!)

Pp who said they dont rinse well - I think modern dishwashers are a lot better than even those from 10 years ago. We got a new one 4 years ago, relatively cheap non famous brand and j was dazzled at how much better than old one it was (is).

LakieLady · 12/01/2020 14:38

@IncrediblySadToo: that's exactly how I think of my dishwasher - it's a cupboard for dirty dishes, etc!

The only things that don't go in mine are a cast-iron casserole, a cast-iron frying pan, the wooden bread board, non-stick pans (ruins the non-stick and non-stick stuff is really easy to wash by hand) and a few of the better knives.

I didn't know about the diswasher dulling them. I've never put my 1970s Prestige knives in because they have wooden handles that are riveted and I think the heat and steam would fuck them up, and my Victorinox carving knife, because someone told me that it would loosen the Fibrox handle.

I love my carving knife in quite an unhealthy manner. It is a joy to use, slices meat wafer thin, and keeps its edge with just two swipes of the steel at every use.

I don't like DP using it, having caught him chopping cabbage with it, on a plastic board (plastic blunts knives). I believe I may have told him that if I caught him misusing it again, he'd be extracting it from his chest. Blush

imgonflirtwiththedevil · 12/01/2020 14:39

Everything but wood and the cheap plastic Tupperware as it never stays in shape during the drying process

nokidshere · 12/01/2020 14:39

I put everything in mine. Including toys, ornaments, Lego....

The only time I wash anything by hand is if the dishwasher is full and I don't want stuff lying around.

movingdilemma1234 · 12/01/2020 14:46

I don't put in my copper saucepans nor my chef knives, that's all

ChilliandLemon · 12/01/2020 14:55

Everything, else what’s the point of having one. I would tell your DH either he can use it properly, or if he continues to be precious he can do the washing up.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 12/01/2020 15:05

I avoid buying anything thats not dishwasher safe if I can. Everything except my fancy wine glasses goes in mine, expensive chopping knives, plastic chopping boards wooden utensils, pans, glasses, cutlery, baking trays, grill pan the lot. The whole point of having a dishwasher is so that you don’t have to wash up.

Blimey, absolutely everything here as well as pegs, toothbrushes, lego ... I could go on! I have been known to run DW twice on the bounce if it's been a particularly big mealtime. Nobody ever went to their grave wishing they'd done more washing up OP.

Oldraver · 12/01/2020 15:18

Almost everything

No wooden boards, Le Crueset frying pan, can opener (tend to find it buggers them up) and crystal glass.

Oh and Ive recently discovered my water drinking bottle shouldn't go in there as it cracked
