AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

I was a tiny bit like this when we got our dishwasher, purely because my mum never put pans and stuff in ours at home (she still doesn’t). But our pans don’t have wooden handles, and aren’t ceramic with unglazed bottoms so they’re fine.

Absolutely everything bar one glass and one mug goes in, and those don’t because (duh) they’re not dishwasher safe.

I also put a net bag of Lego in there a couple of weeks ago before I took it to the charity shop.

Incidentally autocorrect decided that sentence above should have been “I also put a bet bag of Lego in Tver” Hmm

Jomarchsburntskirt · 11/01/2020 19:17

Absolutely everything.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 11/01/2020 19:21

Everything. Had no idea that you weren’t meant to put sharp knives in the dishwasher.

EnidFromGuernsey · 11/01/2020 19:21

Absolutely everything- even my horses bit and my stirrup irons used to go in on a separate wash with the dog stuff

raspberryk · 11/01/2020 19:22

Everything except my hand painted glasses, so this includes le creuset, pans, wooden things etc.

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 19:23

I put the dog bowls and kong toys through on an intensive wash. Gets them lovely and clean Grin

Progress2019 · 11/01/2020 19:24

Everything apart from my wooden bread board, that is also the bread bin lid. I started to, but it developed a crack.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 11/01/2020 19:25

I completely and utterly agree with your DH. My DH, however, completely agrees with you!

Legoandloldolls · 11/01/2020 19:25

Everything except really grubby pans. I never put in non stick frying pans or backing trays either. Baking trays dont get clean as I only ever use the eco setting plus space issues

IncrediblySadToo · 11/01/2020 19:28

everything that is dish safe, whats the point of having a dishwasher otherwise

That’s why I’m debating whether to get one or not 😖🙄🤣‍🤷🏻‍♀️

I am refitting the kitchen and can’t decide whether to get one or not.

I’m FED UP of washing up and even more FED UP of there permanently being mugs/the odd plate etc ‘on the side’ - so I’d like Em a large ‘dirty dishes storage space.

OTOH dishwashers DO ruin stuff and I LIKE my ‘stuff’ so I’m not sure I’ll actually wash much in it 😖🙄

Plus many of them don’t rinse thoroughly enough for my liking.

Deelish75 · 11/01/2020 19:32

Most things go in. Don't put our water bottles in (dc said they taste funny after being through the dishwasher) and plastic Tupperware, I find they flip over easily and then they're full of water, my wooden chopping board and dp's beer glass doesn't fit but everything else goes in.

AriadnesFilament · 11/01/2020 19:33

Good grief, who could be arsed with all that extra work?! That’s what having a dishwasher is for!
Tell him to get a grip!

Coughsyrupsucks · 11/01/2020 19:33

Everything goes in there, including my vintage 1930s serving dishes. No way in hell I’m ever washing up anything again. (Got my dishwasher late in life!)

pontiouspilates · 11/01/2020 19:38

The only things that don't go into my dishwasher are wooden spoons and my cast iron casserole dish. Even my non dishwashable slow cooker pot goes in there.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/01/2020 20:00

Thank you for info about good knives.
Interestingly, we got a new dishwasher in November and I had noticed that my chopping knife seemed to need sharpening more frequently recently. So maybe new washer is to blame.

Annoyingly my food processor bowl is not dishwasher safe. I think the heat from the drying cycle makes the plastic brittle. My current bowl has lasted a lot longer than its predecessor which I did put in machine

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2020 20:04

Everything.
I'd put my children in there if I thought they could take it.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 11/01/2020 20:08

Everything goes in! I only buy stuff that does!

The Star Wars mug was sent to work with DH!

Bamboo and silicone spoons here. Wooden chopping boards are banned (to DH's dismay!)

I will neatly pile and wait for the DW to be free rather than wash up!

OwlinaTree · 11/01/2020 20:32

I'm more like your DH op. I don't put saucepans etc in as they never seen to come out clean, they have baked on food on them. Also they take up loads of space.

I don't put plastic tubs in as they never seem to dry properly.

I put plates, dishes, cutlery, glasses, mugs in there. I hand wash the rest. So about 50/50!

undercoveraessedai · 11/01/2020 20:35

Absolutely everything goes in mine except my favourite proper knife, a couple of lovely mugs with shiny bits that say handwash only, and my flasks/keep cups. That's it. Dishwasher has always been an essential and a deal-breaker for me because I hate washing up with a vengeance!

user1498572889 · 11/01/2020 20:38

Everything unless it says not to. I try not to buy anything that isn’t dishwasher safe. Life is too short to stand at a sink washing up. Also if you load the dishwasher badly your husband may have a tantrum and forbid 😂 you from ever loading the dishwasher again.

LaurieMarlow · 11/01/2020 20:41

What stuff do you think they ruin?

Do you use crystal glasses/gold leaf porcelain the whole time?

Ninkanink · 11/01/2020 20:47

Everything but our fancy Japanese chef’s knife and the odd item that definitely isn’t dishwasher safe.

Crockery,
Knives,
Cutlery,
Garlic crusher
Wooden cooking utensils,
Glasses,
Mugs,
Pans,
Bowls,
Pyrex dishes,
Oven trays,
Baking tins,
Etc etc

If it fits, it goes in.

RoseDog · 11/01/2020 20:52

If it fits it goes in including Ds heat changing mario mug, no damage has been done to it and he's had it a few years!

Troels · 11/01/2020 21:10

I throw everything in the dishwasher, even the wooden chopping boards, if they split and break I get a new one. I eventually end up with couple that don't split through sheer luck (from Ikea). I threw two away, same type just not as sturdy.

Troels · 11/01/2020 21:12

Victoronix knives do fine in the dishwasher, it's like cutting with a razorblade, best knives ever.
