AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

Chopping knives- handwash
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc) - only wooden stuff stays out
Saucepans - dishwash
Mixing bowls- dishwash
Oven trays- handwash as oil bakes on if dishwashed
Sometimes chopping boards- tend to handwash

If it’s not ok for the dishwasher, we don’t buy it.

Same, pretty much. Except my cast iron cookware. I'm the same with clothes; if it's dry clean only, I'm probably not buying it.

Welshmaenad · 11/01/2020 18:39

Ever put a garlic crusher in the dishwasher unless you want everything to come out stinking of garlic, IME.

Otherwise everything goes in, including recycling that needs washing, like tins. It's why I bought it!

NichyNoo · 11/01/2020 18:40

Everything but posh wine glasses go in mine. We have a stone block to re-sharpen any knives that go blunt.

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2020 18:40

@RyvitaBrevis thanks for the explanation - every day is a school day! Grin

4cats2kids · 11/01/2020 18:40

Everything usually.

But mines not working! Crown Sad

raspberrymolakoff · 11/01/2020 18:41

When we had 5 children living at home I also hand washed the pans as they took up so much space in the machine and I didn't want to have to unload it more than once a day. Since we are now on our own and DH empties it we put in almost everything except expensive knives and wooden boards.

Waveysnail · 11/01/2020 18:41

I chuck everything in

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/01/2020 18:43

We don't put wooden items or good kitchen knives. I have some glasses that aren't suitable for the dishwasher too, everything else goes in.

Redglitter · 11/01/2020 18:43

The only things I dont put in the dishwasher are my good wine & champagne glasses. Purely because they have Swarovski crystals on them.

Otherwise everything else goes in

pigsDOfly · 11/01/2020 18:44

Everything goes in that can go in. I used to have some non stick pans that couldn't go in and I've gradually ditched those; don't find they cook as nicely as non non stick pans anyway.

Knives go in and I sharpen my cutting knives before each use anyway, although I didn't realise that the dishwasher blunted them.

There was a thread on here some years ago from a poster asking if she wbu to put her Crocs shoes in her dishwasher, turns out, as mentioned by a pp, that half of MN put their lavatory brushes in, their trainers, Crocs and, if I remember correctly there was even someone who put their loo seat in, or maybe I've made that up. Anyway, seems an awful lot of people use their dishwasher as a general household cleaning appliance, if MN is to be believed.

Personally, I took it all with a pinch of salt, dishwasher salt, naturally.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/01/2020 18:45

Everything goes in.

If it doesn’t go in the dishwasher it doesn’t get bought.

Why would you go to the faff of not sticking everything in.

HyacynthBucket · 11/01/2020 18:45

I don't put in cutlery or stainless steel pans, but I do put wooden spoons 9against a lot of customary advice) because I think they develop c racks in the wood and it is more hygienic to wash them at the high temperature in the machine. They are need to be replaced fairly frequently anyway, but do not seem to come to harm in there. Also put in chopping boards but they are dishwashable, not wooden ones.

IAmNotLego · 11/01/2020 18:47

@AllYouGoodGoodPeople I'm with you. If it doewnt survive. I don't need it Grin

HarrietThePi · 11/01/2020 18:48

Everything except non-stick pans and knives from a really expensive knife set which possibly are dishwasher safe but I don't want to take the risk of damaging.

saraclara · 11/01/2020 18:48

Everything. What's the point of putting the things that are easy to wash in a bowl (plates, cutlery etc) in the dishwasher, while having to hand wash the horrible things (pans and baking dishes with stuff burned on)?

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 11/01/2020 18:51

I dont put good knives in there, anything wooden, or non stick (which includes some of our pans and baking tins etc)

MarinaMarinara · 11/01/2020 18:53

Everything (including on occasion DS’s high chair - it’s one of those cheapo Ikea type things that you can dismantle) except for the Le Creuset, crystal glassware (rarely used) and our silver cake forks. I don’t see the point of not using the dishwasher for as many items as possible!

willowmelangell · 11/01/2020 18:58

Everything but, heat changing mugs, wooden chopping boards, those curly wurly plastic straws and pre 1940's cutlery. Coaster and table mats. Experience speaking here.Grin
Playmobil in a laundry bag. Awsome. Lego, ditto.
Plastic combs and hair brushes. Plastic hair bands. Nit combs. Vases. Pet dishes.
Has anyone ever tried those ideas about cooking food in the dishwasher? Never been that brave but I am willing to learn!

contentedsoul · 11/01/2020 18:59

Ha Ha funny
We just replaced both integrated fridge and dishwasher. Both packed in after 15yrs service.. We had paid the yearly extended warranty too....but decided against using it and replaced both with Bosch Appliances

Thing is I've got so used to washing by hand, the dishwasher has never been switched on...despite being 6wks old now - lol

Pilot12 · 11/01/2020 19:05

Everything unless it says it's not dishwasher safe and DP likes to wash our best Wedgewood dinner set by hand even though it says it can go in the dishwasher.

AnnaMagnani · 11/01/2020 19:06

My DH - who is in charge of dishwashing in this house - wishes to tell your DH he is insane.

In the Magnani household everything goes in the dishwasher except posh glasses and posh chopping knives. Le Creuset is fine in it.
If it doesn't fit, it just waits until the dishwasher is unloaded and he can cram in a second load.
If it comes out not quite clean, it goes round again.

He is still traumatized by The Great Dishwasher Disaster of 2018 when it broke for several weeks including Christmas.

Why would you dishwash the easy stuff and handwash the hard stuff? It's madness.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/01/2020 19:07

Everything including muddy wellies, toilet brushes and dog bowls

;)

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/01/2020 19:08

everything that is dish safe, whats the point of having a dishwasher otherwise.

Stronger76 · 11/01/2020 19:13

Everything.

If it melts/warps twas not destined for our house.
