AIBU to actually use my dishwasher

So for the past 5 years we’ve done it my husband’s way because I figured you’ve got to pick your arguments but now with new baby I really don’t want the extra work.

What currently does go in the dishwasher:
Cutlery
Crockery (plates & bowls but not big bowls)
Glasses
Mugs
Sometimes chopping boards

What currently does not go in the dishwasher:
Chopping knives
Any sort of cooking utensils (large wooden spoons, garlic crusher etc)
Saucepans
Mixing bowls
Oven trays
Sometimes chopping boards

So currently after dinner we put plates and cutlery in the dishwasher and wash and dry up everything else...

What do people put in their dishwashers? And what is a no no and why?

Everything

Cherrysoup · 12/01/2020 15:20

Not the wooden chopping boards, obviously, or the stained glass glasses, but pretty much everything else.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 12/01/2020 15:23

Everything!

And if anything gets eventually wrecked, I buy another one.

Life's too short for washing by have when you've got a dishwasher!

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 12/01/2020 15:23

*by hand

thunderthighsohwoe · 12/01/2020 15:25

I lived for 31 years without a dishwasher and have lived 2 years with one. Quite frankly I’d put everything from shoes to the cat in there if I could.

HouseOfCrayCray · 12/01/2020 15:40

I used to put non stick pans in, but the non stick flakes off & ruins them, so defo don't recommend that. Also don't recommend putting any wooden spoons, wooden chopping boards etc as the water makes them swell & split.

Alsohuman · 12/01/2020 15:44

With a wooden spoon costing all of 50p, I just buy new ones.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2020 15:49

There's a lot of non stick pans available that are dishwasher safe.

We have a cheapy Skoville one from Asda that's a really good pan, cost about £15 and has been in the dishwasher at least 2-3 times a week for a couple of years with no signs of damage.

I don't have wooden utensils, so can't comment on that.

Glitterblue · 12/01/2020 15:53

Everything except the wooden chopping boards and things that aren't dishwasher safe, which in our case is a couple of mugs and some glasses.

Likethebattle · 12/01/2020 15:54

Everything goes in. I put my garlic crusher in all the time and never had a smell in the dishwasher. I have done beautiful glasses that are not dishwasher safe so I use my Ikea tumblers instead

hazell42 · 12/01/2020 16:20

I put everything in the dishwasher.
I will not use a dish that does not go in the dishwasher.
My wooden chopping board did split.
So I bought a plastic one
My excuse is that I have a bad back, and can't stand at the sink washing dishes, but, actually, I just really hate washing dishes, and did so long before my back problems.
Your husband is nuts

abitlostandalwayshungry · 12/01/2020 16:40

everything, inclusive non dishwasher safe items. life's too short.

MuchTooTired · 12/01/2020 16:48

The only thing that doesn’t go in my dishwasher is my vintage China which I collect. Other than that, if it breaks in the dishwasher, it’s not for me!

mumwon · 12/01/2020 16:51

not wooden cutting boards (so mostly use plastic now) not best china cups & saucers (which are only used occasionally) not china with gilt on edge (ditto) or my bone handle cutlery set. I now have dishwasher proof pastry brush & can opener, - basically if it fits in it can be washed. Dishwashers can wash at much higher temperatures &, it is said to be more economical with water.

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 12/01/2020 16:57

Everything except the wooden chopping board. Or stuff hat won’t fit.

RustyParker · 12/01/2020 17:02

I only buy things that are dishwasher safe. I resisted getting a dishwasher for a long time but I love it so much I don't remember what my objection was now!

It's weird though, my Tefal frying pan says it is dishwasher safe but the base is corroding. Any ideas why??

CorporeSarnie · 12/01/2020 17:10

There has to be common sense in what you put in there, no decent knives as they'll get ruined, wood or rubber spatulas, ditto, trays are too big and will go rusty. The ready of your list wouldn't be harmed. But I don't own a garlic press, good knives do a much better job imo. Just get on with it? Life a bit short for dishwasher arguments.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/01/2020 17:15

@LakieLady

i believe I may have told him that if I caught him misusing it again, he'd be extracting it from his chest

I like your style! 😊

@Alsohuman

Which is it?

Nothing ruined here in over 20 years of dishwasher use.

Or

With a wooden spoon costing all of 50p, I just buy new ones

???

Which isn’t the point anyway. Not everything is about money. I buy things that I like, I buy them on holiday etc (like the olive wood spoons) because they’re a pleasure to use and remind me of places/holidays.if I bought 50p wooden spoons from ASDA I wouldn’t care about the cost of replacing them either buy I can’t replace a lot of the things I have because I don’t have a time machine.

Maybe I’m too precious/sentimental about things like that 🤷🏻‍♀️but I don’t see what’s wrong with looking after stuff?!

@LaurieMarlow

Have you actually used a dishwasher for any length of time?

Yes I have, and they ruined plenty of nice mugs etc. Anyway, there’s no need to be snarky because I have a different opinion to you

@AtLeastThreeDrinks

Idon’t think the dishwasher is much hotter than the scalding washing up water. Not really sure what damage it could do?

For the majority of things it’s the chemicals & the water blasting at them. For wood it’s that they’re in a hot/wet environment soaking up water for far longer than if you hand wash them so they swell.

Lots of people saying they don’t ruin stuff, but the majority of people don’t put their good knives or crystal in because it ruins them - why do you think that is?! If it can dull knives it’s not going to be kind to other things. It’s not like they’re out to spite good knives 🤣

jcurve · 12/01/2020 17:22

Everything except non-stick pans/trays, Le Creuset pans, wood chopping boards, delicate glassware, plastic food storage containers and chef’s knives.

CecilyP · 12/01/2020 17:28

Just about everything goes in for me. I have one chopping board that’s a bit too big, as are my best plates but otherwise all goes in. Really haven’t had any disasters in 20 years of ownership. The way you’re doing it now sounds crazy!

terriblyangryattimes · 12/01/2020 17:33

Everything apart from wooden chopping boards. Wine glasses, chefs knives, tupperware, the kids bath toys, husbands baseball caps.. seriously everything

PrincessPain · 12/01/2020 17:50

EVERYTHING.
Baby bottles, cups, cutlery, chopping boards, plastic trays you eat your dinner off, roasting trays, baking trays, cake tins, mixing bowls.
If it fits, it goes in.
