Harry and Meghan could have had a relatively quiet life in the UK, cutting ribbons, raising a family and having a trusted circle of friends. Much like the Wessexes. Instead they fell in love with the idea that they have special talents to change the world. This was always a disaster waiting to happen. The accelerated timetable is the shock.

I agree with this

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 10/01/2020 22:03

And for what it's worth, Kate is not a good role, model. But that's not the point of this thread. Start one on her and I, amd many others, will gladly agree that she's a terrible role model.

Unusualusernames · 10/01/2020 22:09

YANBU. I'm not a fan of the royal family at all but I don't dislike Meghan and Harry. I have some affinity with Harry because I lost a parent at a similar age and I feel like he has suffered genuine pain and I do get why he would want to get away from it all. I also feel like he has had incredible privilege at the cost of the tax payer and it's quite disrespectful to "normal" people who have shit lives and can't just walk away.

Butteredtoast55 · 10/01/2020 22:12

Why is Kate a terrible role model? Is it because her main role seems to be to have had children and be inoffensive and polite?

JulietJanuary · 10/01/2020 22:23

Yes, that's really looked down on nowadays. Sad.

Meghan is basically mute most of the time so I'm not sure why you think Kate is not as good as her in that respect lol.

bluebell34567 · 10/01/2020 23:37

@AraGrand your links are very good.

Turquiose · 10/01/2020 23:44

They've about 40.million between them why do they need to work?! And now they'll probably still get royal protection plus take all their money overseas. Thanks for that then. Supposedly the royals were only good for bringing money into the country but they're taking it out! Now she's buggered off to leave him to face the music! We know who is in charge there then. She calls all the shots. Whole things a joke. Wish we could be rid of the whole lot of them.

Dowser · 11/01/2020 00:03

Leigh..your story is truly heartbreaking

doritosdip · 11/01/2020 00:22

Turquoise - if they want to fly on private jets and live like their friends like Serena Williams, £34 m isn't enough

Dongdingdong · 11/01/2020 01:32

Meghan has signed a voiceover deal with Disney apparently, but the fee will go to an elephant charity. Although I spotted that in the DM so no idea if it’s true.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 06:49

My brother in Canada said the Canadians are delighted.

Scarsthelot · 11/01/2020 06:51

The canadians wont be paying for their protection. They didnt pay for the protection for the wedding. A wedding of 2 people, where one (according to lots on this thread) never wanted the his role in the royal family.

Funny how he had a massive royal wedding. This man who has 'never wanted his role'.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:13

I guess the Canadians see it as a compliment to them. To us it's a slap in the face and a rejection of Britain.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:16

His exact words were 'Lol. Canada loving it '

I'm not sure whether he meant they're loving the prospect of having them there or loving the fact that Britain has been given the two fingers.

Scarsthelot · 11/01/2020 08:36

Does anyone actually care they wre going though?

Or is it more around the "we are going but wanna keep the best bits'

And the 'I know wer are worth 40 mil but also want daddy to bank roll us for a bit until we can become financially independent'

Whilst also claiming to have empthay and infinity with the poorest and most vulnerable people. Yet cant be Independent on 40 mil.

And the 'we will keep the titles thanks. Though we dont believe in them or think they are important. But they will earn us money' or 'we just want to be Hatry and Meghan.......but will keep the titles'

Thats what people have issue with. They can go, Canada is welcome to them. I do think Canada, presuming they are welcoming them, shpidm pay for their protection while they are in that country.

If they werent such hypocritea, the 2 fingers to the UK might mean something.

I think most people would not have thought negatively about this if it was 'we want a normal life. We are denouncing the titles and moving away'

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:46

I'm Irish and a lot of celebs have holiday homes in remote parts of Ireland - West Cork and Donegal seem to be particular favourites. I think it's great as it's a compliment to Ireland. I suppose Canada feels the same. Canada won't fund them though. Same way as we don't fund Sarah Jessica Parker. To be honest we never even hear when they're in Ireland. I think Madonna goes to Donegal. Angela Lansbury is another one.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:50

I read two stories about them during their six weeks in Canada. One was about a popular restaurant refusing them when phoned about it as they couldn't cope with the security. Another was of them offering to take a photo of a couple walking in the woods who had been taking selfies. It must seem like a haven to them.

Most people however don't give up their day job to go on permanent holiday. That's the luxury of royalty though I suppose.

Do we know what their plans even are for when they decamp? Is it to sell merchandise? That sounds ultra tacky. Or to do rounds of talk shows or something?

Scarsthelot · 11/01/2020 08:51

Same way as we don't fund Sarah Jessica Parker.

She would pay for her own protection. Ni country pays for it.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:54

And what ever happened to their plan to move to Africa???

Canada has to be Meghan's choice surely? Is that where her mother lives now? She seems to be very close to her Mum.

Little Archie will only grow up with his maternal grandmother - no cousins, aunts, uncles, Great Grandmother etc. from Harry's side.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 08:59

Canada isn't really a short commute. I guess depending on which side of it they set up home depends on how long of a flight. If it was somewhere in Europe, you could commute easily. But longhaul doesn't make for easy commuting. Not with a baby anyway.

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 09:00

I bet Charles regrets walking her to the aisle now!

AraGrand · 11/01/2020 09:06

As I said, my brother decamped to Canada a number of years ago. My mother in particular hates it as she rarely gets to see her grandchildren. My Dad is more stoic about it, but I know he misses his son and would love to have him around. In some respects there can be an element of grieving involved in emigration. I think Charles dearly loves his sons even though he's not really the sort to show it. I think he'll be a little sad about it all. But stiff upper lip and get on with it etc! Jolly good!

LIZS · 11/01/2020 09:34

I doubt Africa could offer the same guarantees of privacy and security, especially for Archie. I'm sure the trip last summer enabled them to investigate possibilities over there and these 6 weeks for Canada. M already has a base and friends in Canada so would always have been her preference. The interviews on the Africa trip may well have been in the wake of realising that it would not work and reality in UK beckoned. She has never settled here to the same extent. Even if the intention initially is to split time , over time the UK trips would be more of a chore and likely lessen.
