Racism

Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

How is British news bleating on and on about her mother’s ancestry over and over again after their engagement is announced and what that means for the royal family considered being welcomed with open arms.

That was the very first thing I noticed. It was repeated over and over again. I remember the interview they did and the nasty comments about her here. She was from (almost) Compton the DM publicised instead of just saying she was from Canoga which is nowhere near ghetto or dangerous and she went to private schools from age 2. Constantly publishing things from her half-siblings who hadn’t seen or talked to her in over a decade yet had been noted to have said racist things about her and her mother from other family members, yet Meghan was the problem and should forgive them.

She’s an actress but so was Cressida Bonas yet don’t remember people using that as a reason why she wasn’t good enough for Harry.

Open arms.. please 🙄

All countries are racist to a degree and the UK is far, far less racist than most countries

Agree that all countries are racist but disagree that the uk is less racist than most other countries. It's more reserved than nearly all other countries and people keep their thoughts to themselves

What bothered me way back before Meghan came on the scene was the precious adoration of Harry in the first place.

Dressed in a Nazi uniform. Did the sort of usual twatty behaviour expected of twatty army toffs.

If he were, say, a celebrity offspring (see Tom Hank's son), or a footballer from a poor background, he would be seen as an idiot.

But he was cast as the 'cheeky, personable, human, likeable' one. I think this is part of the whole narrative - that Meghan has changed 'their' precious 'man of the people' prince.

FriedasCarLoad · 09/01/2020 09:41

Just one of my black friends said she’d never experienced racism in the UK. But I'd actually witnessed her being on the receiving end of racist treatment and comments. They were just a fairly subtle and "polite" form of racism.

And even if I hadn't, we have to consider that some people who suffer racism understandably don't want to talk about it. It doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

I don't often witness racism myself now... But then I'm a white British SAHM of a white child, in a very white British town. Doesn't mean there isn't a problem with racism here (although it might be a bit more subtle perhaps) and certainly doesn't mean there isn't racism in the country. I'd hardly be one of the first to notice!

If people of different ethnicities are saying there's racism, maybe we should just listen, rather than get defensive?

I'm honestly very surprised that @AraGrand hasn't noticed any racism directed at her biracial child.

Temp123999 · 09/01/2020 09:41

@AraGrand
Proclaiming you have black DH, mixed race DC, black neighbours, black dog etc whilst spouting offensive views is the usual defence of racists

phoenixrosehere · 09/01/2020 09:48

This is what shocked me most when I moved here. The level of micro aggressions and how easily it wasn’t noticed and even accepted. To be honest, I find that sometimes worse because people are less likely to believe or realise how horrible they sound.

Mm is very unlikeable due to her personality

Do you know her personally? Because otherwise you have absolutely no idea what her personality is, other than what you assume.

and have seen the racist card used alot, usually unnecessarily

Who are you to judge whether its unnecessary?

JacquesHammer · 09/01/2020 09:53

They also think Gollies are whimsical little toys and their black friend just LOVES them. They call the local shop the "P**i Shop" and the owner just laughs along with them...

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 09/01/2020 09:58

jacques

I overheard two of my relatives earnestly explaining to my three children that it was ok to refer to the shop as youve just described as everyone did it, everyone liked the owners, no one was being racist and the owners didnt mind

mothertruck3r · 09/01/2020 09:58

Really? Try being a Jew in most Arab countries, a black person in Russia, Chinese in Indonesia etc. Some countries actually have laws that openly discriminate against minorities races/religions.

Sure, there are racist people in the UK but there are also loads of very tolerant, non-racist people. As I said, there are loads of countries where racism is actually state-sanctioned, let alone practiced by the public!

Trillis · 09/01/2020 09:59

The word uppity is specifically used to describe a black person (more usually women) who don’t know their place.

Well, you live and learn. I'm 50 and had no idea that uppity could be deemed to be racist. I have googled and this seems to be an American import? My knowledge of the word uppity comes from this
www.mrmen.com/mr-uppity/
which is nothing to do with race. Just someone who is arrogant and rude and thinks they are better than everyone else. Why do we have to import American meanings for words, when they never meant that over here?

Temp123999 · 09/01/2020 09:59

@Desolate2nite
In my work I deal with a diverse mix of people and have seen the racist card used alot, usually unnecessarily
What is the #racecard?
In my experience this expression is used when people complain about being subjected to discrimination.

Cheeserton · 09/01/2020 10:00

non White people are not allowed to complain

That's simply untrue. There are massive public conversations around these issues and companies all over the place have vastly improved mechanisms and training to help ensure respect for diversity and equality, including facilitating the reporting of problems. Huge public money is invested into tackling racism. Representation of minorities has massively improved in so many sectors. Who exactly doesn't allow complaining? Yes there's still a lot to do and yes, the last few years have been nasty in terms of laying bare a racist undercurrent, but your statement in absolute terms simply isn't true.

Don't you know that now days you are not allowed to dislike the behaviour of someone of colour because that automatically means your a racist!!! People who think like this devalue the real victims of real racism which most certainly does exist in this country! I genuinely believe however that the intense dislike of Meghan in this country stems not from racism but from her utterly arrogant behaviour.

Desolate2nite · 09/01/2020 10:02

We are all entitled to our opinions. Yours are actually quite aggressive. Get a life pal 🤣

Johnsonsfiat · 09/01/2020 10:03

A few years ago, a racist would have prefixed what they were about to say with "Don't get me wrong .." Now they come straight out with it. They've been emboldeneded by the press and social media.

malylis · 09/01/2020 10:03

But you only describe Meghan as arrogant and rude and thinks she's better than anyone else because she is of mixed race.

Its the whole "getting above herself" "who does she think she is" stuff.

Temp123999 · 09/01/2020 10:05

@Desolate2nite
You are entitled to your opinion but I'm also entitled to call out racist language and stereotyping.

JacquesHammer · 09/01/2020 10:05

Yours are actually quite aggressive

Says the racist poster who posted the usual "I can't be racist because I work in a diverse role natch"

Do you know MM personally? Or are you playing fast and loose with language because you're a little bit racist?

Johnsonsfiat · 09/01/2020 10:07

Can anyone list the things Meghan has done wrong? Maybe, I've been living in a parallel universe, but all I've seen from her is usual royal family stuff: meeting and greeting, smiling and waving and an expression of her interests in particular issues that is no greater than Charles' interest in town planning.

malylis · 09/01/2020 10:07

Oooh don't call racist people racist.

They don't like it.

See a fair few racist posts from regular posters on the Labour AS threads too.

Funny that.
