Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

doadeer

Your post is spot on!

C130 · 11/01/2020 18:14

treaclepumpkin I agree with you. It is so sad that it has to be this way, that you have to suffer the daily micro aggression and feel that you have no choice other than to be resigned to it happening. It just adds another level of stress on top of everything else.

blinkingowl · 11/01/2020 18:44

I feel sorry for people who genuinely suffer from racism. But being black or mixed race doesn’t make you above criticism. It’s not fair.

malylis · 11/01/2020 18:58

It doesn't make you above criticism, no one has claimed it does.

But claiming that there is no racism here is bats hit, the denial of it is repugnant.

Reenskar · 11/01/2020 19:02

Not to deny that racism is a huge issue in the UK, but it is an evil that is present in many other countries too...

malylis · 11/01/2020 19:06

That study proves nothing.

The Brexit vote was all about immigration, we k ow which way that went.

redbullgivesyouflings · 11/01/2020 19:09

Sometimes I think the difference is that British people, across the board, tend to not publicly voice what they feel. You don't get the same level of reservation in many other countries.

Reenskar · 11/01/2020 19:17

I’m not suggesting it proves anything, per se, but the OP was raising an issue with the UK being racist. I don’t deny that racism in the UK is a problem. I’d be interested to see if any posters have experience of countries where racism/prejudice doesn’t exist?

Don’t get me wrong, I found the extent of the attitudes uncovered by Brexit depressing to say the least. With regards to equality and diversity and protection from discrimination we have a long way to go, but we are ahead of some other developed countries with similar economies.

Livelovebehappy · 11/01/2020 19:21

Nope. The reason people generally dislike her is because she is a strong and opinionated woman. Many female celebs who are the same are equally disliked, whatever their race. Look at women like Katie Price and Lily Allen - both are very opinionated, and both are pretty unpopular. The establishment will absolutely despise Meghan because women in the Royal family are expected to be compliant and seen but not heard. Race doesn’t come into it.

malylis · 11/01/2020 19:27

Of course race comes into it.

She's uppity, above her station, refuses to do as she as told.

Livelovebehappy · 11/01/2020 19:36

malylis what’s being uppity and above your station got to do with the colour of your skin?? That’s more of a class or sometimes gender thing. Or in this case not towing the line of expected behaviour when marrying a royal.

redbullgivesyouflings · 11/01/2020 19:41

but we are ahead of some other developed countries with similar economies.

The problem is that I don't think that study actually proves this. What I personally feel, is that we as a nation are less likely to admit our prejudices as compared to people hailing from other countries on the list. This ties in with the whole 'stiff upper lip' and the greater propensity to 'grin and bear' things/requests we don't like in the name of needing to appear 'polite' — all quintessentially classic British behaviours.

Livelovebehappy · 11/01/2020 19:43

And other past women marrying into the Royal family have received negative publicity and criticism from the public - Sarah Ferguson, Sophie (Edward’s wife) and even Princess Di. Unfortunately it comes with the job.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/01/2020 19:44

“Uppity” is a term loaded with racial connotations though and it’s disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

malylis · 11/01/2020 19:48

Yup, pretending that their aren't connotations to all of the thing aimed at MM is hilarious.

Denying it makes you a racist too.

Scum.

Salene · 11/01/2020 19:50

I'm white and I dated a black Nigerian guy for 5 years, we lived in Scotland. He used to get abuse quite a lot but ignored it, and we got a fair bit when walking hand in hand mainly aimed at him, mostly white males.

When we visited his family in London and walked hand in hand in the area they lived, a predominantly black area , again we encountered abuse but aimed at me this time and mostly by black women

Comments like , white trashy stealing out men

Again we ignored it.

This was 2004-2008 time so things might of changed

Personally I just think people are racist in general , white / black all sorts especially where mixed race couples are concerned

Challfont · 11/01/2020 19:50

Can anyone actually name any countries where there is no racism ? Lots of people are saying Britain is a very racist country almost with the implication that just about everywhere else isn't. So Britain bad, everywhere else great.

KenDodd · 11/01/2020 19:53

I just don't know how people can think for a second that the UK isn't racist. Have they not seen our PM and many of the current MPs being cheered by the masses? Not only are we a racist country but we enthusiastically vote for racist politicians.

I'm white British, I never describe myself as 'not racist' because frankly, I probably am in ways I can't see. I've never met a person who thinks they're racist even after they've just come out with the most blatant racism you could have the misfortune to hear (they should all fuck off home). They always just think they're right. In fact I'd go further and say anyone who comes out with the old 'I'm not racist' line almost certainly is because they don't even have the incite ot see that their behaviour is shaped by the society we grow up in and we are all subject to unconscious bias.

Salene · 11/01/2020 19:53

Challfont

I agree with your statement about all countries being racist. My husband is a international worker and he says the Americans are very racist against black people , he also said Angola is one of the most racist countries he has worked in

They absolutely hated white people.

He works in oil industry

blinkingowl · 11/01/2020 19:55

In our family we all think my sil is..... “uppity”.......she’s white. Confused If you knew her you’d understand. Hope we aren’t all “scum”.

malylis · 11/01/2020 20:02

It has different connotations when there is historical use of it against certain groups.

But then you knew that.

In fact MN was full of people horrified at antisemitism in the Labour party who were able to list how different use of words is very specific.

Not so much now eh.

KenDodd · 11/01/2020 20:05

And btw, I don't think it's my fault I'm racist (or anyone else white British) I'm a product of society. It absolutely is my fault though if I don't examine my own thoughts and actions and try my very best to not be racist.

C130 · 11/01/2020 20:07

KenDodd What an insightful post. It is a shame more white people do not have your awareness.

Livelovebehappy · 11/01/2020 20:09

Uppity is used to describe someone acting above their class/social standing. Just because some people choose to adopt it as a racial slur, it doesn’t mean people can’t still use the term for its original meaning. As someone up post said, most of use it to describe someone who has their head up their arse.
