Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

Hi all

We're reinstating this thread now - please continue to report posts you'd like us to look at.

@MintyMabel Stomzy and Gary Neville said the similar things on racism in the UK within a couple of days of each other.

In the case of Gary Neville the story ended up being how the Sky interviewer was a bigoted idiot and not what Neville was saying.

doadeer · 09/01/2020 15:44

I think racism in the UK is both subtle and overt. It's a hugely complex issue.

The harvard test is interesting to do if you haven't. I've been with DH who is black for 9 years, I have friends of many different ethnicities and live in London. I was shocked on the test that I still have a subtle bias towards white people. It really upset me.

The reason I'm saying this is we are all capable of racism - we shouldn't have a knee jerk reaction to this to deny it or be defensive, we should be challenging unconscious bias within ourselves.

We need to remember aswell that it isn't always about telling people to go home or the n word. For example my DH is very fetishised and objectived sexually by white women at work after a few drinks. He's had a number of senior female managers make dreadful comments. Why do they think this is OK? Because most black men in the media are sex symbols or known for athletism (rarely their intelligence)

I grew up in a white area and I can honestly say it would be impossible for me to understand the scale and depth of racist sentiment before being close to those of other ethnicities. We need to use white privilege to be allies to other ethnicities, listen to them, I mean really listen and be willing to fight with them.

LakieLady · 09/01/2020 15:47

We get so caught up in how far we've come that we forget there's still a way to go.

Great way of putting it.

So many people think that just because we have laws against discrimination, then everything's ok. It's the small, the subtle, the everyday racism, homophobia, sexism that's so soul-destroying.

6th January 2020, Stamford Hill - 13 year old Jewish boy punched in stomach on bus while attacker yells "You stupid Jews think you own the world."

29th December 2019, Hampstead - Synagogue and shops spray painted with antisemitic graffiti blaming Jews for 9/11

13th December 2019, Hackney - Jewish man punched on bus after intervening to protect Jewish teenaged girls from man shouting antisemitic abuse

2nd December 2019, Stamford Hill - Rabbi beaten up by men shouting "Kill Jews! Fuck Jews!"

So yes, I would say the UK is still racist. I don't allow my children to leave the house wearing anything that could identify them as Jewish. It's too dangerous.

LakieLady · 09/01/2020 16:10

I'm 63 and think this country is now more racist than at any time since the 70s/early 80s. Maybe it's because people feel more able to voice these thoughts lately or maybe it's because I am spending more time away from big cities. I now live in a mostly white town and there is plenty of low key casual racism

I'm in my 60s and I agree with this. I think the whole Brexit thing created a climate where it was acceptable to be anti-immigration and that made racist people feel that their racism was somehow legitimised.

redbullgivesyouflings · 09/01/2020 16:16

I think the whole Brexit thing created a climate where it was acceptable to be anti-immigration and that made racist people feel that their racism was somehow legitimised.

It's a worldwide shift IMO. So many politicians e.g. Trump hold highly questionable views and it causes people to think 'hmm, if people in power (or people they look up to for whatever reason) can say that, that means it's okay'. The world is getting more polarising day by day, sadly.

Drabarni · 09/01/2020 16:17

Just look at what this country has done to Romany, gypsy and travellers since the end of WW2.
They haven't even bothered to try to cover it up.
Just discrimination at every turn. I know racism exists for all minorities, but for RGT it's acceptable by society.

Pan2 · 09/01/2020 16:26

Another here remembering the racism of 60s (barely) 70s and 80s.

Brexit has given us, as a nation, the right to be a racist little fuck-face. Boris Johnson says it's okay, and you " have a right to express your opinion".

LakieLady · 09/01/2020 16:26

@Drabarni: gipsies and travellers face appalling prejudice. I've seen threads on various forums that include comments worse than any I've seen.

And some might remember this www.theguardian.com/society/2003/nov/16/raceintheuk.uknews

Someone I know was on the committee that approved that, ffs! She genuinely claimed to think it was "just a bit of fun".

She's a feminist and a socialist and she just didn't get it.

Drabarni · 09/01/2020 16:32

LakieLady

Some of my family members are scared, the one's without houses. I'm not sure if you are aware but the new back door laws, proposed in November will without doubt see children taken into care, because the LA's will not have enough emergency housing for the amount who will be made homeless.
The Police Commission have said they don't want these new responsibilities and the trespass law is suitable already.

LakieLady · 09/01/2020 17:15

The loss of traditional stopping places and the lack of short-term sites is a real blow for travelling people imo.

I'm not surprised that there are real fears among the gipsy and traveller community.

Even if LAs had enough accommodation to make provision for those affected, they would still apply the existing residence qualification for eligibility and many travelling people would find that they had never stopped long enough in any council's area for a council to accept responsibility for housing them.

Patroclus · 09/01/2020 17:53

I would agree with them. As for the 'I just dont like her nothing to do with race' stuff; I've said it before, its the same with Dianne Abbott. Its apparently just a massive coincidence she gets more abuse/online threats etc than all other MPs combined, picking apart tiny details of her photos and people blacking up to dress as her to the darts ffs.

Theres a pathetic level of denial about it all. I had one guy telling me it wasnt racist of Tommy Robinson to use the word p*kis.

The mad thing is I believe we're still statistically the least racist country in Europe, if not the world (or definitely the top 20)

YasssKween · 09/01/2020 18:01

I have a carribean family next door to me. They've not experienced any sort of racism

I can not believe someone wrote this!

How could you possibly know that?!

Absolutely ridiculous.

easyandy101 · 09/01/2020 19:13

I'm in my 60s and I agree with this. I think the whole Brexit thing created a climate where it was acceptable to be anti-immigration and that made racist people feel that their racism was somehow legitimised.

Genuinely think it's always been there really. My partner's and family's experience of racist comments and attacks has been fairly consistent throughout the 20 odd years we've been together. We've always lived and worked in the same areas and always done similar jobs, working together for 11 years and it's been fairly consistent in incident rate and severity

As a young white bloke growing up in Croydon (20 whatever years ago) i couldn't believe what people would say when they think no one's listening

StarbucksSmarterSister · 09/01/2020 20:41

Genuinely think it's always been there really.

Yes absolutely, but I believe Brexit has emboldened the racists. They think it's ok again to actually say it.

Drabarni · 09/01/2020 21:24

I am researching the racism and discrimination in Roma, Romany, Gypsy and Traveller communities and am active in many groups.
I had absolutely no idea as to the extent and the duration, it shocked me as I'm sure it has those studying other ethnic minorities.
Frankly I'm scared of the uprising throughout Europe, it shows similarities to Germany from about 1933 onwards.

Why can't people just be allowed to live life as they see fit following their own culture and belief system.
Why is this too much to expect.
For all those who feel all hope is gone whatever your ethnicity. Thanks

Hingeandbracket · 09/01/2020 21:41

What is the vote supposed to be - it's not clear what YABU and YANBU are supposed to signify?

SoleBizzz · 09/01/2020 22:56

My life experiences has been deleted!! Joke!!

BanSprouts · 10/01/2020 13:51

From personal experience and the experiences of people I know, I certainly think there is a lot of racism in the UK.

Mlou32 · 10/01/2020 21:16

@missyoumuch believe me, you don't need to feel sorry for my sister. She is arrogant and toffee nosed and looks down her nose at everybody. She is the epitome of uppity. She would do very well to know her place instead of thinking she is above everybody else.

DdraigGoch · 10/01/2020 22:08

There is racism in the UK but to imply that we are a nation of knuckle-dragging troglodytes is rather wide of the mark. The racism in many European nations is really appalling.

Likewise, while I'm sure that the Duchess of Sussex has been on the receiving end of some nasty abuse for her ethnicity (I try to avoid the cesspit better known as 'Twitter'), most criticism of her (or both of them as a couple) have been regarding the hypocritical wokeness which can also be found among many other celebrities.
