It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

The carefully worded statement from BP is interesting.

Its not as dramatic at all.

Just pointing out that they weren't active royals but maintained the title.

Apparently he's completely banjaxed any relationship with William, probably for good.

I just told my dad (who lives in Venice) this news and he said (totally seriously), "I expect he will now get a job as a gamekeeper"!

Nice to be able to pick and choose and still benefit from the benefits and financial security that comes from being a "royal". Working towards becoming financially independent... I'm sure they've got enough resources to be going on with so should go be independent now. They'll always be able to cash in on the benefit of him being born into a royal family.

Taxpayers will likely still pick up the tab for their security here and in the U.S. estimates at six hundred thousand minimum.
They've trademarked the Royal Sussex brand so will be able to flog all sorts of tat under that and they'll be able to get all their clothes, jewels etc for free (can't endorse or accept feebies in themain RF supposedly ), lots of endorsement opps and flouncing about on US TV being feted.

Way past time (centuries) for the RF to go.

Buckingham Palace reaction is interesting - I think Meghan has once again made the mistake of believing she and Harry can be in charge of their own lives. I do feel a bit sorry for her - being American she just doesn’t get the Royal Family.

For people apparently not seeking publicity and wanting privacy they have done this with the most impact possible, just in time for the 6 o clock news, to take precedence at the 10 o clock.

It all smacks as a massive finger up to the Queen actually rather than anyone else and all she has done is support them.

I agree with @Greenpolkadot that MM probably had no idea how all-compassing royal life would be and how intrusive and nasty the press can be either.

I live in the US and I can honestly say that the average American knows little about the royals aside from their names (of the well-known ones), why would they, it's a different country? Also, MM really WAS a minor actress who didn't garner much public attention. I live here and I had no idea who she was when their engagement was announced. Only "Suits" fans would recognize her name!

They're not happy so they're stepping down as senior royals. Fair enough, I hope they have happy, successful lives.

I think they did tell the Queen before announcing, but likely very little notice and more an announcement as opposed to permission. And I support them 100%

I think she is utterly fame hungry and felt understandably constrained by the royal role. Always one step behind Kate and William? No thanks. Meghan wants to be the star of her own show. This is the next step. I see Goop-style chat shows (sorry “conversations”), beauty sponsorships, start her own magazine, lots of philanthropy, private jets, hobnobbing with the Clintons and The Clooneys, lecturing on climate change and “empowering women”. Cash to splash. No more boring ribbon cutting and feigning interest in provincial UK towns and people. No more making small talk with Princess Anne.

I think this is what’s known as having your cake and eating it too.
