See link. News just announced.

www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2020/01/08/prince-harry-meghan-step-back-senior-members-royal-family-couple/

It does sound like they might be escaping from the public scrutiny and online abuse.

Pray tell. Who is your informantconfused

The BBC's royal correspondent says he was told this by the Buckingham palace press office.

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2020 20:40

Do people really believe they realised this without the Queen knowing? Confused

Sheesh, the average intelligence on here is even lower than I thought.

greenlavender · 08/01/2020 20:40

@Thesispieces - it's just been announced. Read the news.

Thingaling · 08/01/2020 20:40

“Becoming financially independent” reads to me like they are planning on cashing in on royal status in America, like Duchess of York did. Launching a charity is all very well but they can’t expect the charity to pay for Givenchy couture and custom built yoga studios.

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:41

The affair happened.

But William is the wronged party, after all he married a good English white girl.

serialtester · 08/01/2020 20:41

Who actually gives a shit and why? Is it a slow night on Corrie for the hard of thinking?

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:42

Average intelligence on any MM thread is low.

Anyone else would be able to hide the racist shit.

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2020 20:42

custom built yoga studios.

That was bollocks made up by the DM btw.

TooManyPaws · 08/01/2020 20:43

Gods, no wonder they're getting away. So much sheer nastiness about a couple (and particularly a woman) that the vile perpetrators know nothing about, no more than the prejudiced and self-serving vitriol of so-called newspapers. I can take or leave the royals but it's been totally ridiculous, down to assertions that Archie isn't her baby, was a reborn doll, and other insanities. The lunatic statements are well shown on this thread. Anything about the DoS brings out the haters willing to believe any old shit about her, just because she's "different".

blubelle7 · 08/01/2020 20:43

So do they keep their titles?

FromEden · 08/01/2020 20:45

The Buckingham palace statement is very strange. I wonder what is really going on?

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:47

They haven't "quit" but you can see those who read the mail cause that is the headline.

Btw The Duke and Duchess of Windsor held no royal role but kept their titles.

LillianGish · 08/01/2020 20:47

They have always been far down the pecking order - much lower down than Prince Andrew was at a similar point in his life (IYSWIM - Andrew was third in line when he got married). Good luck to them trying to make some money off the back of their royal status - that never seems to go well (Edward’s TV company, his wife, Fergie’s various attempts and let’s not even go near Andrew’s efforts to cash in on his Royal status). Royals trying to ride under the radar always do best when they genuinely keep their heads down and do good works in unglamorous locations (see Princess Anne), but I think, as an American, Meghan’s point of reference was Princess Grace - rather overlooking the fact that Grace Kelly married the crown while Harry was really quite far removed (and let’s face it if there’s anywhere where your place in the hierarchy counts it’s the Royal Family). I’m not surprised to hear they are bowing out, but I think the manner in which they are doing it means they are unlikely to be left in peace.

Hagbeth · 08/01/2020 20:49

They can do what they like but I think the shouldn’t be allowed to trade mark an English county name. It belongs to the people, not Harry and Meghan.

ivykaty44 · 08/01/2020 20:52

This thread really does highlight why they are doing what they are doing and that’s said as a person who isn’t a fan of royalty

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2020 20:54

Lauriemarlow you have completed misinterpreted what I wrote!
I have nothing but sympathy for MM. I do think she believed she knew what it was like to be famous but had no idea what it would be like to join the Royal Family. No vitriol whatsoever. And I didn’t say I knew what she was thinking, it was just my opinion
Some people, especially the press, are vile to her and it IS largely racist but I’m certainly not one of them

And as for being a minor actress that’s just fact, most people hadn’t heard of her. I enjoyed SUITS, it was kind of good in a bad way so I vaguely knew who she was but she really wasn’t very famous.

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:54

"It belongs to the people" nope it belongs to those on whom the title was bestowed.

Wrong again.

lowlandLucky · 08/01/2020 20:56

They want to have their cake and eat it, typical of these two

Calmingvibrations · 08/01/2020 20:56

I like your post @Amylox
It’s a shame many people don’t seem to accept any criticism of the Sussex’s - because apparently this is always racism. Turn that on it’s head, it’s saying that essentially because Meghan isn’t white then she is above reproach.

Looks like they are going to continue to take tax payers money then, until some point in the future. Whenever that will be. Despite them having plenty of it (money) already.

Personally, I’d rather that portion of the tax payers cash go to the NHS / Social Care / Schools / emergency services etc.

7salmonswimming · 08/01/2020 20:58

Hasn’t Harry been open about his hatred of the media scrutiny? From well before MM? And his mental health issues? If she wants out, sounds to me like they’re well suited. They turned down a title for their child, Harry probably told her it’s not a life he wanted for his children and had this in mind all along.

The Foundation with all the patents etc could be intended to build up a cash cow like the Duchy of Cornwall: do-gooding with a profit.

Obviously this is what was going on during the schism between W&K and H&M. Possibly why Kate has been looking so much more settled of late. She knows exactly what her future will look like now. She’s the one, no more comparisons.

To be announced today this would all have had to be done and dusted, largely, before their 6 week holiday. They’ve dumped a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of George, Charlotte and Louis. But if my brother came to me and said he wanted out of the family firm and could I do it all alone from now on because he just can’t cope, it was ruining his marriage, affecting his mental health...well, I’d probably accept it reluctantly but accept it nonetheless.

Amylox · 08/01/2020 21:00

Do people really believe they realised this without the Queen knowing? confused

The palace has confirmed this is the case.

What they've done is released a statement of what they want and presented it as a fait accompli in the hope that will force the Queen to agree to what they want or risk a public falling out, they're trying to strong arm the Queen.

It's a tactic Diana used during her divorce negotiations too. There was controversy around whether Diana would keep her HRH. Diana announced to the press that she had spoken to the Queen and offered to renounce her HRH title but the Queen had refused to accept it and said she could keep it.

None of it was true, and the Queen didn't allow her to be strong armed into anything then. She won't now either.

I really think most of this is down to Harry and not MM at all. If nothing else he should at least have prepared MM better for understanding what the role would be and the constraints they would have to operate in. Harry should know this is not the way to do these things and be dealing with an exit better if that's what they want.

He's been very, very silly and probably destroyed any future role with his family.

Ha!!! That’s what he will be doing! I thought the Queen mum had £8m debts when she died! She owed the banks a lot. Not good at betting on the horses I heard! At least she turned up when required!

She did, and the Queen cleared the debts. However, she had invested a fair amount of money for all of her great-grandchildren (except William) previously so the debts didn't wipe out the inheritance from her as they would have from normal a normal Granny

meredithgrey1 · 08/01/2020 21:02

So much more to come out about her, and also ‘Archie’.

Oh yes, you wouldn't believe the stuff I've heard about 'Archie' from a very reliable insider source. He's actually not even a baby, but a 45 year old man. Hmm

FromEden · 08/01/2020 21:02

Well apparently he didnt go to any of the royal family and say those things and they were unaware of the decision until it was announced
