How many funerals have you been to

First off, I'm aware this is morbid and I don't want to upset anyone, but I'm currently studying grief and loss and becoming aware of how much bereavement I have experienced.

I'm 35 years old and I've lost 6 family members, a close friend, a teenage neighbour, accompanied two close relations to funerals of people I also knew and have had a pregnancy loss. So 10 funerals and a miscarriage.

I was just wondering if others had experienced the same or less or more? I don't know if it's changed my experience of death.

AIBU in thinking it's a lot for someone my age?

7 that I can think of. One friend when we were young. Sad
And 6 elderly relatives inc all grandparents.

RachelEllenR · 08/01/2020 23:33

I'm your age and have been to 10 I think.

7 elderly relatives (sad but not tragic)
3 friends - 2 cancer and 1 accident (utterly devastating).

The family ones have all been over 80 so, while I've been sad, i did not find them particularly hard, even grandparent ones. My three friends who have died, just find it heartbreaking.

Onceuponatimethen · 08/01/2020 23:34

6

Welshwabbit · 08/01/2020 23:43

I'm 40 and have been to:

3 grandparents' funerals (the fourth died when I was one so I don't think I went)
1 great grandmother
1 great aunt
Husband's grandparents x 3
Husband's aunt
Two spouses of close colleagues
A close colleague's mother and brother (separate funerals)
Close friend's mother
A client who I had represented whilst he was terminally ill (I'm a barrister) and who died a matter of weeks after the case.

So I think that's 15. May have missed some.

cstaff · 08/01/2020 23:47

I have already said above that I am irish and have been to countless funerals but this thread has me thinking.

The most heart breaking funerals I have been to both involved young children. It was a brother and sister dying in a house fire. Their mam and sister managed to escape. The kids were aged 1 and 3. Absolutely devastating.

BackforGood · 08/01/2020 23:48

My 18 yr old dd has been to more funerals than most replies on here (except the Irish folk!)
We have no Irish blood.
Just English and Welsh.

Babyroobs · 08/01/2020 23:51

I'm 50 and have been to ten that I can remember.

I’m 37.

My dad
My gran
My grandad
My uncle
2x great uncles
My great aunt
My mums cousin
My cousins fiancé (tragically died of cancer at the age of 21 - I was also 21 at the time so found that funeral hard going)
7 other funeral of people I knew that I considered friends although not super close friends.
3 of my DH’s family members (aunts and uncles) I met them a few times but not close. Went more for support of DH.
BIL’s mothers funeral. Again more to show support to him than knowing the person.

Got another to go to at the end of the week. DH’s auntie passed away last week.

So that will be 20 in total. Quite a lot considering I actually have a small family (on my side anyway). I’ve got to the stage in my life now I have a dedicated funeral outfit and shoes.

Saracen · 09/01/2020 01:04

Only three (I'm 51). Oddly, some of the people close to me who've died haven't had funerals, including my dad. My mum just didn't want one for him.

Two of the three I went to were for slight acquaintances.

Number64 · 09/01/2020 01:26

I’m 36 and I’ve been to 8

2 grandparents
1 parent
1 extended family
2 friends/family of close friend/boyfriend at the time
2 friends

Decadoma · 09/01/2020 01:39

48 and 12, unfortunately 5 of them were within 4 months including my dad's about 3 years ago. It's taken a long time to get past all that.

squeekums · 09/01/2020 01:48

31 and been to at least 6
First at 12 for my mum

ThighThighofthigh · 09/01/2020 01:56

After my Dad's i decided I'm not going to any more, except my Mum when the time comes.

Yehdivvy · 09/01/2020 02:00

I'm 43 & have attended 10 funerals.

Bluerussian · 09/01/2020 02:21

I can't remember how many funerals I've attended but I'm twice the op's age. The hardest were a friend of mine who had died suddenly at 40 and, of course, my husband whom I miss terribly. I'm now remembering another couple of friends who died of cancer in their fifties and felt very sad at those too. I was upset at parents of course but they were older and, though it is still hard, it's expected.

I also had miscarriage and was not grief stricken by that.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 09/01/2020 03:08

I'm 30 and have been to 3
Grandad as a child
Friends Dad as a late teen
Nan about 2 years ago

Chocpear · 09/01/2020 03:59

Am late forties, been to three.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/01/2020 04:21

I am almost 50 and have touch wood only been to 2.
One was a close family friend; but we happened to be staying at their house overseas.
The second was a cousin who died way too young. All my grandparents died before I was born, bar my grandmother who lived and she died a long way overseas, so I didn’t see her much and didn’t go to her funeral.

HeronLanyon · 09/01/2020 04:32

Mum
Dad
Uncle
Grandmother
Grandfather
Grandmother 2
Lovely work colleague / best friend
Dp’s mum
Dp’s close friend
Lovely old Neighbour

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/01/2020 04:49

I'm 53. I went to.my first funeral (my Grandma) aged 12.

Since then I've been to about 20. I think. I come from a very small family so haven't been to that many family funerals but I've lost friends. neighbours and colleagues.

My dad died last year and that was the first funeral.my DC (20 and 22) had ever been to.

notanotherpothole · 09/01/2020 21:16

Another Irish person here, no idea how many funerals I've been to in my lifetime, but there were 7 in 2019
Can I just ask those of you who only attend family and friends funerals, how many people tend to be at a funeral? Most I've been to have been easily over 100 mourners, often several hundred. But I'm guessing yours are smaller?

arixo · 09/01/2020 21:19

4, 3 was my Grandparents & 1 was a family friend
