I go the supermarket that is halfway between my house and DDs school. I only go to the others if there is something specific I want- it's not worth the 10 extra minutes of traffic each way

PooWillyBumBum · 07/01/2020 09:19

I have lots of nearest supermarkets. I go to Lidl generally, which is slightly further away, because it's cheaper. If I need specific things I'll go to another. If, for instance, Sainsburys have a good offer on fizz around then I'll pop in for that beforehand. I've shopped at Morrisons, ALDI, Tesco, Sainsburys and Lidl within the last year.

WhoWants2Know · 07/01/2020 09:21

The one I use most happens to be nearest, but I think I would probably still choose that one even if it were a bit further.

Unshriven · 07/01/2020 09:22

We have most of our shopping delivered from a Tesco miles away.

I go to Aldi a 45 minute walk away for a lot of stuff too.

There's a Co-Op, a Sainsburys, and loads of Express/Metro/Local stores within 5 minutes, but they are expensive.

JeezyPeeps · 07/01/2020 09:23

I go to loads.

Granted I go to my nearest one most often, but as I walk there and its 2.2 miles away, I don't go there for a big shop.

I drive to the nearest Lidl, and go to Asda/Sainsbury/Aldi when I'm nearby and have a bus day ticket.

LadyCordeliaVorkosigan · 07/01/2020 09:27

I live equidistant from Sainsburys and Lidl (walking distance) and tend to use them in a 3:1 ratio. If I had less cash or didn't have a kid with ARFID, I'd use Lidl more. If I preferred to use a car, I might go to the Tesco which would be only seconds further away by car and easier to park in (so no actual time increase and it's larger - but I hate its lighting and noise so avoid where possible).
I suspect the majority of people have a choice of two, especially if they get food delivered.

LemonPrism · 07/01/2020 09:29

Depends - I go Sainsbury's for specific things, Iceland or Aldi for cheap things I know they'll have and Tesco for top ups. All similar distances

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 07/01/2020 09:29

I have a Tesco, a Lidl, and Aldi, an Iceland Food Warehouse, a Marks and Spencer all within half a mile of my house and both a Morrison's and a Sainsbury on my route to work so I can pick and choose.

I do the bulk of my shopping in Tesco with oddments from Lidl and Iceland, very occasional bits from Aldi and Morrison's and even more rarely Sainsbury. I never set foot in M&S.

There must be lots of people like me who have a choice as well as lots who don't.

adaline · 07/01/2020 09:30

We go to Tesco because it's the only one that's within a 40 minute drive from our house!

misspiggy19 · 07/01/2020 09:31

No- my nearest is a Lidl and Asda. I don’t like their products so I don’t shop there.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 07/01/2020 09:31

We go to Sainsbury's mostly but if we need 1 specific item that's always reduced somewhere I'll check where's cheapest.

I think lots of people buy their Xmas food shop from somewhere different than their normal grocery shop though

PawPawNoodle · 07/01/2020 09:32

I go to Asda which is slightly further away than my local supermarkets, of which I have the generous options of Tesco Express, Tesco Metro, and Tesco Superstore.

1990shopefulftm · 07/01/2020 09:32

we have an aldi and an asda within 5 minutes drive, we only go to asda when aldi doesn't have what we need.

toomuchfaster · 07/01/2020 09:33

I drive past Tesco to get to Asda as Tesco just got too expensive.

Spied · 07/01/2020 09:38

We have a Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrissons, Lidl, Iceland and Aldi all within 2 miles of us ( Lidl, Iceland and Aldi are a few meters away)
We only shop at Tesco or Sainsbury's though. OH hates Aldi ( food & queue), Lidl ( choice and queue) and Iceland ( can't do 'big' shop there i.e toiletries, choice etc)

Spied · 07/01/2020 09:39

Morrissons and Asda - 'too busy'

steff13 · 07/01/2020 09:39

I have 4 that are a mile from my house; they're in a little cluster on the same street. I have a favorite, which is the one I always go to. I'll go to the others occasionally, but I generally stick with my favorite. If it was farther away away, I'd still go to that store.

KittenVsBox · 07/01/2020 09:40

I guess it depends how far the alternative is!
Mum regularly switches between several places. I am loyal.
Mum has 4 big supermarkets within 2 miles of her house.
I have 1 within 5 miles......

FourTeaFallOut · 07/01/2020 09:41

My ds has coeliac so I go to whoever has the best gluten free section. Lately, that's been Tesco but they seem to be thinning out their range so we've switched over to Tesco. There was a point where Lidl stocked Warburton's gluten free bread but they stopped, so we don't go there any more.

I spend about £150/ week on food - I wonder how many other people choose their shop based on a particular dietary requirement and if shops know that they are chasing away customers because the turnover on a few items seems to be performing poorly?

FourTeaFallOut · 07/01/2020 09:42

Switched to Asda.

PineappleDanish · 07/01/2020 09:43

Within 5 minutes we have an Asda, Waitrose, Lidl and Aldi. So yes, 99% of my shopping is split between those 4.

There are Morrisons and Sainsbury's further away, about a 10 minute drive. I don't feel so strongly about either one that they are worth travelling for, given what's closer by. MIL will drive miles to her nearest Sainsbury's rather than go to any one of a dozen other supermarkets closer by because she perceives herself as a Sainsbury's customer. Bit odd, but people in general do some very odd things.

GroggyLegs · 07/01/2020 09:43

Wrt Christmas results, I think many people would definitely go to a cheaper retailer like Aldi specifically at Xmas to do a one off bulk shop.

But I do agree, many people tend to be creatures of habit and will usually only change supermarkets if something happens. My regular supermarket isn't the closest though, It's the one with click & collect, a clothes section & better parking.

Thestrangestthing · 07/01/2020 09:43

I go to whichever one I fancy walking around. We have 2 in our small town, soon to be 2. They have them all in 2 towns about 6-8 miles drive from me. I really just pick which one I fancy visiting 😂 if we are particularly skint, I'll go to aldi.

keepingbees · 07/01/2020 09:44

I have all the major supermarkets within 5-10 minutes of me.
Tesco is too expensive and always really busy.
I never use Sainsbury's as it's small and a faff to park as it's pay and display.
Asda is nearest so good for grabbing the basics and also good for homeware and toys.
Morrison's is better for food and fresh produce.

Crocwearer · 07/01/2020 09:45

I only have one supermarket in my nearest town now (tesco) so no option to switch! But when I lived in a place with a couple i often switch my big shop between tesco, morrisons and lidl.
