I have a lidl and aldi the exact same distance away. But I shop further away because I buy a weekly bus pass and the selection in those branches are better. There is also a massive home and bargains by them, so I can combine a 'discount' shop.

I also babysit for my DD, who has a lot of big stores by her, but a smaller B&M, in a different place, has better every day stock. My youngest DD likes specfic stuff from Iceland and a few things I buy are really cheap in heron/farm foods.

Everyone I know shops around. Many pensioners are shopping for working family members and they treat it as a day out, so go here there and everywhere.

SarahTancredi · 07/01/2020 10:29

I dont so much go (unless I have to )
So much as I get deliveries from somewhere that nore often than not has everything we want and is reasonable quality across the board and reliable.

For us that's morrisons

If I go to the supermarket again I go to morrisons.

We are lucky in that we have a good choice of supermarkets in fact 3 have duplicate stores. I cant be arsed with visiting multiple places and playing roulette with food. I'm.sire most savings would be pretty much null and void with petrol costs and time added on. Life is too short to constantly traipsing round supermarkets trying to get everything you need or binning stuff that turns put to be rubbish and having to go back.out.

If you find somewhere that does everything stick to it.

As far as xmas goes I'll ask.MN about the turkey and get the rest in morrisons Grin

The only supermarket that isn’t near me is Waitrose. I used to shop there when I lived next to one but now shop mostly in M&S (there is another shop that sells cleaning products and a butcher on the same street) as that’s my nearest. I really don’t think I could be bothered going further for the same stuff. Obviously if I had a less viable option as my closest then I might venture to a less close one.

stripeypillowcase · 07/01/2020 10:36

I don't have a car and hate supermarket deliveries with a passion.
they always stop on the bike paths to unload and the substitutions can be, erm, interesting.

I have 2 'normal' and one eco supermarkets in walking distance so that's where we go.

Where we live, people do make an active choice where to shop as we have lots of options. We have Morrison’s, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Waitrose, and an M&S all about the same distance away. We shop in all of them every couple of weeks (except Tesco) depending on what we need or location logistics. Usually Morrison’s or Aldi for basics with a top up from Waitrose. We don’t shop at Tesco through choice. There’s an Asda and Lidl not too far away either, but they’re hell to get to.
There’s a real science behind supermarket locations and which succeed in different locations. It’s fascinating.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 07/01/2020 10:37

I switch between Morrisons and Sainsburys (delivery) and Asda (in person) depending on who has the best deals and offers on the stuff we use.

Inherdefence · 07/01/2020 10:39

I live very near a vast Tesco, I can see it out of the upstairs windows and can walk there in 10 minutes which is quicker than I could drive it (Its on the far side of a very complicated one way system with 5 sets of traffic lights to get through). I very seldom go in there because the drive is such a pain and it’s so huge it takes forever to get around. I do most of my shopping online. I use the Tesco app but it isn’t delivered from the shop I can see but from an ‘order fulfilment centre’ 40 miles away. If I visit a supermarket it will be Aldi or Waitrose or Morrison’s. They are all a 3-4 mile drive away but they sell things I can’t get online from the Tesco warehouse.

jay55 · 07/01/2020 10:39

I'm a bus ride from any supermarket so get delivery and switch it up all the time.
But a Sainsbury's is opening very close to home soon and so I'll switch to there.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/01/2020 10:45

I go to loads & bulk buy offers. Meat gets delivered by Waitrose which is miles away.

happycamper11 · 07/01/2020 10:46

I go to a few but then I have many to choose from - favourite is tesco and Lidl which I'm in the middle of 2 of each so really get to mix that up. Asda also identical distance- go sometimes. Morrisons also similar but dislike - go occasionally. Aldi is a little further so only go if I'm out that way or for something specific which I stock up(laundry liquid and chilli oatcakes). Sainsbury’s sometimes but a bit expensive

TheOrigFV45 · 07/01/2020 10:51

I switch.
When DS1 is away at uni, DS2 and I have Ocado.
When DS1 is back I go to Aldi and Tesco 1) because it's cheaper and 2) DS1 can mind DS2 so I can go to the physical shop (I'm a single Mum).

I was too late to get an Ocado Xmas delivery slot so did some (non perishables and drinks) at Ocado and the rest at Aldi and Tesco.

I also use Hello Fresh, Simply Cook and Gousto when it's just me and DS2 and when they send me vouchers to entice me (too expensive otherwise).

Sotiredofthislife · 07/01/2020 10:58

My nearest is Sainsburys which I use like a corner shop. My main shop comes from Asda but at a 5 mile drive, I consider it too far so have a shop delivered once a fortnight.

Backtoreality1 · 07/01/2020 10:59

Dont use Aldi or Lidl as the nearest ones to me are a bit of a distance, and the parking is horrendous. Also, on the occasion I have been they don't have everything I need and I end up going elsewhere. Have Asda and Morrisons close to me but both very small and again don't always have everything. I tend to go to a big Tesco's about 10 minutes drive away for a main shop, but use M&S and Waitrose for treats.

MyTuxFromProm · 07/01/2020 11:01

I'm not loyal to any supermarket. I just go where I feel like shopping or based on specific items I want.

I'm within reasonable travelling distance of Iceland, Asda, Morrison's, Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S, Booth's and Aldi, so there's no way I'd be loyal to one.

f00k · 07/01/2020 11:01

I drive to Asda which is the furthest away from me. There's a Sainsbury's and a Tesco Extra both the same distance from me but the customer service and parking are so awful in Tesco I avoid it. Sainsbury's I'll go to if I just need a few bits.

TheFoxAndTheMole · 07/01/2020 11:02

My nearest supermarket is Aldi, which I love but doesn't have everything I want. Tesco, Sainsburys and Lidl are all very close too. Depending on where I'm working I might pass an m&s food hall, Waitrose, Asda or Morissons. The are things that I can only get in each of these, so I like to vary it up whenever it's convenient.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2020 11:03

I will go to any Supermarket as long as they have Scan as you Shop. So Waitrose, Tesco or Asda locally, or the huge Sainsburys that's miles away if I am passing.

mum11970 · 07/01/2020 11:06

No. Tesco is my nearest supermarket, I prefer to shop at Asda which is further away. Main shop is always at Asda but will pop to Tesco if run out of something mid week.

NYCDreaming · 07/01/2020 11:10

We have loads. Sainsburys is closest but it's the most expensive and I need to remember to bring £1 for the trolley. If I set off for Sainsburys and realise I don't have £1 I go elsewhere.

We also have an Asda, Tesco and M&S within a mile of the house, plus countless Spars, Co-Ops etc.

We don't have a car and I used to get delivery from Asda because it's cheapest but there were always so many mistakes that I switched to Tesco.

applesauce1 · 07/01/2020 11:11

Today I went to Morrison’s because it is close. They didn’t have some of the important things I needed and after waiting a little more than 5 minutes at the self service for someone to come and approve my wine (had irritable, tired baby in trolley and kept thinking, by the time I put everything back in the trolley someone will be along), I ditched the lot and went to Tesco’s, who had everything I needed and had someone manning the self serve.

So yes. I’ll travel further for good service.

Arthritica · 07/01/2020 11:14

Delivery from Sainsbury’s because I prefer their ethos to that of Tesco. (Tesco is closer but with delivery it doesn’t matter)
Meat and veg every fortnight from the butchers and greengrocers, bits from Aldi, occasional specialist items from Waitrose or M&S. Occasionally bits from Tesco but as I say, I’m not keen on them so I try avoid it.
Never Asda, it’s horrible in there. I can never find my way around.

scaredyscared1114 · 07/01/2020 11:18

Nope, I drive to Aldi because its sooo much cheaper, its an extra 5mins drive so not that far. I spend £60 a week for 2 adults and 1 two year old and manage lots of treats. £60 does not go far in sainsburys, which is only 2 mins away from us.

ExhaustedGrinch · 07/01/2020 11:22

I don't drive and within walking distance (about equal) I have a Morrisons, Tesco, Lidl, Iceland and M&S. I switch depending on what day of the week or time I'm shopping. This is because I know what times on what days certain shops do their last food reductions so I will plan to shop around those times, for example Lidl do theirs first thing so I'll go there at 8am some days, Morrisons can be good between 3 - 4pm on Sundays ... Tesco reductions have been shit lately though so I've not bothered shopping there for a while.

Elbeagle · 07/01/2020 11:22

Our closest is a big Co-Op which is hugely expensive so only use in emergencies. Second closest is an Asda which I don’t like (that particular one, not all Asda’s) so I don’t use that. I tend to go to the Tesco or Sainsbury’s, depending on what sort of shop I’m doing.

SquareAsABlock · 07/01/2020 11:23

We have an Asda in one direction and Sainsburys/Aldi in another. However, they're all a good 20 min walk away, no bus and we currently have no car, so carrying a full week's worth of shopping home is near impossible (adding in bulking things such as nappies, pet food, litter on top). So we have an Asda home delivery with top ups from the corner shop. When we have a car, we'll go back to Aldi or Lidl. I've calculated it will save us up to £20 a week when adding in a delivery charge, as long as I avoid the latter's bakery Blush.
