We go to different supermarkets for different things. DH goes to ASDA for things like washing powder etc, because there's one near his work and they're cheaper. We got to Marks or Waitrose for more special food. We got to Tesco for everyday items because it's closest to where we live. We only go to Sainsbury's for their gammon joints because I like them best.

ViaSacra · 07/01/2020 11:32

We get our weekly food shop from Waitrose, which is probably the third-nearest to us, but if we need little things during the week we go to Sainsbury’s, the nearest supermarket.

KatyCarrCan · 07/01/2020 11:32

According to my Tesco delivery driver, a lot of people switched to Tesco at Christmas because of their delivery and cashback offer to new customers. Distance doesn't matter if you're getting a delivery.
We go to Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Aldi because we have allergies and certain products are better from different stores.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 07/01/2020 11:33

I go to lots of different supermarkets - all close, all have pros and cons, depending on what I want I might go to Lidl for day to day stuff, Tescos for cat food because lidl doesn't have something they like etc.

I'm not loyal to one.

mrsm43s · 07/01/2020 11:33

My nearest supermarket is a large Sainsbury's but I rarely go there, and never for a full shop.

Typically I go to the Morrison's in the next town (athough in fairness only a couple of miles over, and the children go to school/socialise there, so I'm there frequently). I prefer Morrisons because its a smaller store, the products are better value, the fruit and veg in Morrisons are particularly good and its convenient for me. I occasionally go to Aldi to stock up on a few things that we really like from there. Once in a while, I'll go to the massive Tesco about 4 miles away, particularly at busy times like Christmas, as it has a huge carpark, whereas the Morrisons I go to has a small, town centre car park, and can get a bit crazy.

Online, I order from Morrisons or Ocado, as I like that they rarely make substitutions.

But no, I don't just use my nearest supermarket. I rarely use it at all.

Carnabie · 07/01/2020 11:37

I’m all about convenience at the moment, big shop is done online with ocado, top ups from Tesco as I can walk there. I could save money by shopping around more but at the moment my time is more precious. I also don’t have the brain capacity to remember what is on offer where each week.

I hate the Aldi near me, love the Lidl but can never do a full shop there as they never have everything I need.

I find online so convenient, I love that I can think of a meal for next week and just click to add the ingredients to my trolley, or realise I’m nearly out of teabags and add those ready for when I check out. When I go a physical shop it feels like I’m doing it twice; once when I write the list and once when I do the shop. Also no dragging babies around the supermarket!

Wtfdoipick · 07/01/2020 11:41

My nearest supermarket is rubbish and tiny so I have to drive, once i'm driving then it doesn't really matter which one I go to as I have a really good selection all within 6 miles so yes I do choose which I go to and not just use my local

Mandarinfish · 07/01/2020 11:41

I get my shopping delivered, so theoretically I could go with any supermarket, but actually I tend to stick with the same one (Sainsbury’s).

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/01/2020 11:44

My newest is Asda but you have to pay to park so I go to Sainsburys.

Pipandmum · 07/01/2020 11:45

There a super Tesco near me, the next biggest is Sainsbury's 30 minutes away. I wouldn't make a special trip but might go if nearby just for a change. Theres a Waitrose also 30 minutes away and I'd have to drive specifically there which I may the odd time as they do sell different things. But my husband would only ever shop at Waitrose so always drove the extra distance (but usually the shopping was done by me).

SunshineAngel · 07/01/2020 11:50

My nearest supermarket is a Morrison's, literally round the corner. I went there for about 6 months after I moved here, but then gave up, as there are just too many gaps on the shelves all the time - and always where things I wanted should be!

So I go an extra few minutes, and go to the Tesco Extra. It's much bigger, perfectly stocked, and also across the road from my gym, so I can tie the two visits together usually which is good. I think it is a bit more expensive, but tbh I cannot be bothered with Morrison's, it's just rubbish.

Baaaahhhhh · 07/01/2020 11:59

Living in a village with no shops, we are pretty much an equal distance from four towns, all with the complete range of supermarkets, so I just go to the one I like best, which is Waitrose, which is about 15 mins drive away. When I can't bothered to do that, I get a delivery from Waitrose, as delivery is free, and from Ocado on a Wednesday, because delivery is also free. I refuse to pay for delivery!

Madcats · 07/01/2020 12:00

We use Ocado and top up at the nearest little store to where we happen to be. About 30-50% of our weekly shop is done locally on foot at the veg stall or a mini supermarket (never too sure how many need feeding until a day or two before). We avoid the big "take your car"supermarkets 90% of the time

Tesco/Sainsburys/Waitrose try to lure us back with money-off vouchers so we do swap if we know we'll be out in the car at the weekend (12p/litre off fuel is not to be sniffed at when the car needs filling). I'm a sucker for the middle aisle and decent Christmas food and wine at Lidl/Aldi too.

So it must be all my fault!

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 07/01/2020 12:01

I do online with Ocado I can’t cope with food shopping on foot. I top up shop at Sainos tho as it’s next door to my gym.

Wanted to go look at the Christmas treats in Aldi as they’re normally quite good but never got chance.

Postspecific · 07/01/2020 12:05

Our Aldi, Tesco and Asda are literally all next to eachother.

Xenia · 07/01/2020 12:10

Depends where you. Equal distance to my house are Waitrose, Morrions., Tesco, Tesco Express, Lidl, Coop, Sainsbury's and probably others. We are utterly swamped by them all. We even have a 24 hour bit Tesco my sons sometimes have gone to at 3 or 4am.

Some areas of the country will only have one close by so that is the one people will use. I had abhout 20 years of just about never going and having stuff delivered here as I was so busy! Nowadays I go out myself and buy the things as no small children at home any more (when I was also working full time) so working full time feels a lot easier and able to fit it in.

Gingerkittykat · 07/01/2020 12:20

I live in a small village.

The town that is around 15 minutes to the west has Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Iceland and a newly opened Lidl within a mile. I generally go to the Teco superstore because it has a really good world food aisle and it is open till midnight and I go around 11pm.

I wen't to Morrisons yesterday because I went shopping at teatime and fancied a change. but it wasn't great in terms of choice or price.

I will try and go to the new Lidl to see what it is like.

If I could be more organised with time I would go to Aldi more often.

doritosdip · 07/01/2020 12:22

I have a Coop 10 mins walk away and a Morrison's and Aldi 15 mins walk away. I can get to other supermarkets by car but my closest 3 get the most money out of me.

stripeypillowcase · 07/01/2020 12:34

wow - what a mix of responses.
thank you all

I suppose living in a large city gives lots of choice (and not having a car takes it away again...)

Whathappenedtothelego · 07/01/2020 12:40

I have 4 within walking distance, three of them are quite small, one is big (Tesco).

I tend to go to my favourite small local shop, which sells a lot of local produce, I just find Tesco too big and it takes me ages. DH likes Tesco and quite often goes there.

I drive to Waitrose (5 miles away) about once a month for specific things we like that only they sell.

I have given up on Aldi, don't particularly find it cheaper and have found a lot of things none of us like the taste as much as other shops, so not worth it.

I split my Christmas shop between at least 4 different shops, but it was mainly Waitrose.

steppemum · 07/01/2020 12:40

I can drive to the supermarket. From my house I can drive to Asda, Lidle, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsuburies (and a smallish Morrisons).
They are all about the same distance.

If I drive I go to Asda mostly, followed by Lidl or Adli and then Tesco.
I choose that based on price.

But now I usually get my shopping delivered, so it is Asda, again, based on price.

But if I was still at our old house, it wuold be tesco every time, as it was the only large supermarket

ginghamtablecloths · 07/01/2020 12:41

Yes, I certainly go to the nearest supermarket each week which is fairly large - a Tesco. There's a small Lidl which is nearer but it doesn't have a lot of choice and across the road there's an M&S Foodhall. I sometimes go to these for a top-up or if I feel like a change.

NewName73 · 07/01/2020 12:49

I have a Tesco in walking distance but try to avoid shopping there as I don't like their ethics and find a lot of the stuff they carry is poorer quality.

RB68 · 07/01/2020 12:50

I don't have a supermarket for 6 miles and that is the nearest high street shops as well. It is only a med size sains though. We then have Tesco which I rarely go to as don't like their ethics for the most part and never have since an interview after college far too many years ago. Then at 10 miles I have somewhere which has just about all of them bar Waitrose.

Do I switch - rarely and usually for financial reasons - so Lidl is near cheapest petrol, the DIY place and the huge Sains so If we are trying to cut back I go there fill up and collect anything needed for DIY or Pet stuff but at the moment I don't have the time and haven't been over there for several months now.

I have too much else on my plate to faff about with different ones

honeyloops · 07/01/2020 13:01

I live a 5 min walk from a Tesco, M&S Food, and an Aldi, and a 10 min walk from a Sainsburys, and I use all of these interchangably for picking up bits. But I drive 10 min to Asda (or go on the back from somewhere, usually) for a big shop, because it's so much cheaper.
