We usually go to Aldi because it's near work and I like it, but Lidl's Deluxe range draws me in at Christmas. We go to Tesco for Pepsi Max and cat litter (though we haven't been able to get their litter lately so we've swapped to Aldi's), and Dunnes sometimes for Pepsi Max if it's on offer.

So no, we definitely don't just go to the nearest, and we are influenced by offers and seasonal ranges.

fussychica · 07/01/2020 09:47

We have Morrisons, Lidl, Iceland and Waitrose in our town plus an Aldi a short drive away. The nearest Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys are at least 15 minutes drive.

Waitrose is my shop of choice, especially as I can walk there but I would drive to use it. I use all of them at different times based on products available and cost. I'm fortunate that I have the time to shop around and don't mind shoppingSmile

TheReef · 07/01/2020 09:47

I have a Tesco and Asda close to me (3 miles away), but I drive 8 miles further to Aldi as it's so much cheaper

Floralnomad · 07/01/2020 09:48

We have a very local Tesco so that’s mainly where I shop but I also go to Marks at least weekly and Sainsbury for specific items that I can only get there about once a month . I think that you just get used to where you shop and that makes it easier . I use scan and shop in all the places I shop and I wouldn’t use somewhere if I had to go through a proper till because it’s inconvenient .

GiveHerHellFromUs · 07/01/2020 09:48

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername try Iceland/food warehouse for Pepsi Max. You might find it's cheaper (assuming you mean the trays of cans)

Chemenger · 07/01/2020 09:48

Asda and Sainsbury’s are right next to each other. Sainsbury’s was there first and I just never broke the habit of going there. M&S is also close and sometimes drop in there if I only need a couple of things. I have been to Asda a few times but didn’t like it, probably because it took longer to find things, easier to go to Sainsbury’s where I know the layout.

I knew someone who did some work for Tesco on supermarket choice, years ago, and proximity was by far the dominant factor in people’s choice. That was before Aldi and Lidl emerged though, so it might be different now.

WingingItSince1973 · 07/01/2020 09:51

We have Tesco, waitrose and Aldi just down the road. I mainly use Tesco because I can scan as shop then just scan and pay. Makes life alot easier for me as I live in constant pain and also have panic attacks so need to just shop and go. Aldi sometimes but only to see what deals they have on with yarn ha ha xx

FlowerArranger · 07/01/2020 09:54

We are lucky to have a choice....

motortroll · 07/01/2020 09:54

I live near Sainsbury's but go to ASDA as I used to live near it and can find everything in there also my food shop always costs less.

I do in between shops at Sainsbury's.

PurpleStorm · 07/01/2020 09:54

It depends whether I’m after something specific.

Our closest big supermarkets are a Sainsbury’s and a Tesco, a similar distance from our house in opposite directions, I usually go to the Tesco because they stock DS1’s favourite variety of a particular food and the Sainsbury’s doesn’t.

But if we’re well stocked up on the favourite food, then I’ll do my shopping at whatever supermarket is most convenient (in terms of location) for whatever else I’m doing that day. That’s not necessarily the one closest to home.
There’s other supermarkets in the area - Asda, Morrison’s, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, Marks and Spencers, other Tesco/Sainsbury’s branches to choose from if I’m further away from our house.

We also have a small Co-Op within a few minutes walk of our house, so I usually go to that if I only want a few things.

nowaypose · 07/01/2020 09:54

The closest supermarkets to us are Aldi, Tesco and Morrisons. Lidl and Asda are probably a 15 min drive and Sainsbury’s is like a 25 min drive. We do our main shop in Aldi but I pop in Morrisons for a few bits too because it’s closest to my DC’s school. Almost never go to the other supermarkets, we only go to Lidl for the bakery. Not sure if it’s anything to do with distance, shopping at Aldi is more a cost thing.

nowaypose · 07/01/2020 09:55

We have a marks and Spencer’s nearby too but I’m not made of money.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2020 09:55

If people do just go to their nearest supermarket, they're missing a trick as that's almost certainly an expensive way to shop, unless it's Aldi or Lidl. There's no rule that you have to go to the same supermarket exactly once a week and buy the same things.

I pass Morrisons, Asda, M&S, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl on the way home from work, or with a very small diversion, so just go in whichever one I feel like, when we need something, probably Aldi, Morrisons, M&S, Asda, Lidl and Tesco in that order, probably averaging twice a week in total. I might stock up on non perishables if I see a good offer, so often the list is bread, milk, veg and 'anything that's a bargain'.

ohprettybaby · 07/01/2020 09:55

I have no loyalty to one supermarket and use different ones for different products. I live within a 5-10 minute walk of sainsbury's, Aldi and Iceland, 5-minute drive to M&S, 10-minute drive to Asda and 30-minute drive to a large Tesco. It depends on what I want as to where I go.

I stock up on things like Kenco and Gold Blend coffee when on offer. Atm the dark roast Gold Blend is £7 in sainbury's and £4 in Asda so I'll buy half a dozen jars from Asda. Pepsi Max is £1.70 in sainsbury's (up from £1.25 last week) so I'll buy it at £1.50 from Asda.
Bananas are usually much better at the large Tesco but I woukdn't go just for them. I prefer the Torchion ham from Aldi. I recently bought Luxury Turkey Crown and Aberdeen Angus joint from Iceland and 24-month matured Christmas pudding from Lidl (25-minute drive) as they were recommended in Good Housekeeping guide. I buy flowers from Morrisons or M & S.

I don't faff all the time but at Christmas I want the best products. However, even on a weekly basis I still can't get all the things I like in one supermarket.

ColaFreezePop · 07/01/2020 09:57

Nearest to where?

Nearest walking distance to my house is an Asda yet if I want stuff from Asda they don't stock I jump in my car or on the bus to go to the much larger Asda about 2 miles away.

Nearest to my gym, which is 5 minutes further than Asda in a different direction, is a reasonable sized Sainsburys so if I'm at the gym and want stuff that Asda doesn't stock that were I go.

Nearest to loads of shops is a Sainsburys, Waitrose, M&S, Aldi and a Tesco Express. However the Sainsburys and Aldi are small and so have a limited choice of stock.

Nearest to different sets of shops are larger Lidl, Aldi and an even larger Sainsburys. If I want something in particular from those stores e.g. clothes, home items then I will also buy food.

Nearest to work is a Morrisons. I tend to stop there for petrol only though there are other petrol stations on the way back I've stopped at including other supermarket ones where I may pop into the actual supermarket.

Lipperfromchipper · 07/01/2020 09:58

My lidl and tesco are beside each other, I wouldn’t go near tesco. Hate the place and it’s too expensive here.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 07/01/2020 09:59

Lots of people live near enough supermarkets that they have more than one which is convenient. Or they shop online.

So Christmas figures are important to show market share during a high spend period. Assuming that spending is higher, of course, r if people are less confident about splashing out

Elphame · 07/01/2020 09:59

My nearest supermarket is Tesco. Wild horses won't get me to shop there.

Shopping is split between Sainsbury and Waitrose

ime there is not much of a price difference between the big supermarkets. waitrose and m&s are in their own league and aldi/lidl as well.

Straycatstrut · 07/01/2020 10:00

I use Aldi mostly because I can get a full trolley for £40 feed me and my boys for a week, and they have no complaints! I also really like their non-bio washing capsules, just as good as Fairy for my sons sensitive skin and makes clothes smell really fresh.

I'll be honest though, I am getting sick of getting the same Aldi products though I wish they'd change it up sometimes.

HeronLanyon · 07/01/2020 10:00

I live central London with no car (other than car club). Have coop Sainsbury’s and 2 Waitrose’s within walking distance. One of them huge with great range.
Use coop for heavy/basics as it’s nearer. Use Waitrose for everything else.
Have never been in an Aldi/Lidl - none near me at all. Shame as I would use them for specifics as I know they have interesting/cheaper things.

Wild123 · 07/01/2020 10:00

I have no loyalty to any supermarket. I pop into Aldi on my way to work and Sainsbury's if on my way home. I also have a Waitrose, Lidl, M&S and Iceland within the same distance (1/2 mile) so have a good choice. I sometimes do the 10 minute drive to Asda if there is something specific i need from there.

Iwantacookie · 07/01/2020 10:00

Weve got quite a few within 5-10 min drive. Tesco, morrisons, waitrose, coop, aldi and lidl.
Aldi is in town so is a pain to park so I only tend to go there when I need free parking for town.
Tesco I always get delivered but I normally go to lidl because it has a b&m next door so I can get any extras from there.

AlphaJura · 07/01/2020 10:02

I use various different ones depending on where I am. I usually use Aldi for a main shop, because it's cheap. That's a 5 min drive away. But there's also a Tesco extra 5 min drive away, so if I'm buying other stuff in there, I might grab a few top up things but wouldn't do a main shop there.
If I'm on foot and visiting town centre shops, there's an Asda, Iceland and Sainsbury's all within a 10 min walk. Where I go depends on what I need and what's on offer. I do tend to shop around a lot.
I sometimes even use a Lidl which is 10 minutes drive away if I'm on that side of town (which is usually when my dd is at her dancing lesson).
