I have two tesco's one literally behind my house, one a 5 mins drive. A Sainsburys in town which needs multistory parking, a Waitrose in town. Another Sainsburys further out, a Morrisons and then ALDI even further out (4 miles).

I go to Tesco.

CharlotteMD · 07/01/2020 14:07

I get the stuff delivered. I don't have the time to do anything else. But husband is happy to push a trolley round and chat to the old dears in the biscuit aisle if he gets a day off in the week. He cooks too. What a treasure.

stripeypillowcase · 07/01/2020 14:10

see, I don't think I would save a lot of time waiting in for deliveries or maintaining the online shopping order.

You select a time slot for delivery. First thing Saturday morning is favourite for me. I set the list up on my laptop while I'm slugging in bed on the Friday evening. I have twin 4 year olds and a 6 year old so corralling them round Sainsbury's is like trying to herd kittens.

dreamingofmushrooms · 07/01/2020 14:22

We have a Morrisons in our small town, and we go there for frequent top-ups. For a big shop we will go to the Aldi in the next town about 5 miles away, and I often randomly drop in to a couple of others that are on my way home from work.

Within about a 10 mile radius of where we are there are loads. 3 Tescos, 3 Morrisons, 2 Sainsburys, 2 Lidl, 2 Aldi, 3 Iceland, a Waitrose, 2 M&S Food, an Asda and a Co-Op. So we aren't exactly short of choice Grin

SapphireSeptember · 07/01/2020 14:30

I work in one, ergo it's the one I use the most, except for bread. That I get from Iceland (cos it's free from palm oil.)

We're spoilt for choice, we have Sainsbury's, Tesco, Tesco Metro, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Co-Op, M&S food as well as smaller shops. We did have a Waitrose which I miss cos I used to go there for special things. I occasionally go to Tesco, Lidl and Aldi but they're more out of the way and I walk everywhere.

safariboot · 07/01/2020 14:52

We do. Live in a city and have a car now.

Online everywhere's the nearest. Most of our shops overall are Tesco online, but we've also used Sainsbury's.

Bricks-and-mortar, a Lidl and a Lidl-sized Asda are the nearest to home, but I more often go to Morrisons which is slightly further. There's also a Lidl opposite one of the offices, and a Tesco about halfway along that commute. I've also shopped at Sainsbury's, Iceland, Aldi, and Farmfoods on occasion.

It's all about chasing those bargains!

Fifthtimelucky · 07/01/2020 14:58

I shop at 3 supermarkets. My closest is M&S. I go there very occasionally, including once between Christmas and New Year when I bought some vegetarian party food for a big buffet lunch bought.

Next nearest is Tesco, where I do the vast majority of my shopping.

Once every few weeks I go to a Sainsbury's, which is about a 20 minute drive, to stock up on the things I can't buy at Tesco (it's a much bigger supermarket than my local Tesco).

Very occasionally, if I happen to be waking past, I wander into Waitrose. I went in before Christmas because I was looking for something I couldn't find elsewhere (but no luck there either).

NameChangeNugget · 07/01/2020 15:15

Tesco & ASDA are nearest but, it’s always busy, the staff are rude in there & it just seems claustrophobic.
I’d rather drive an extra 5 minutes to Waitrose or Sainsbury’s, the ambience is better.

Oblomov20 · 07/01/2020 15:26

Sainsbury's closest. And then an Aldi opened. Tesco very occasionally.

So yes. Mine is purely driven by mileage.

Purpleartichoke · 07/01/2020 15:29

I go to one if my main goal is meat or produce, another of the main goal is something fresh baked, and the closest one for staples and the sorts of things you find in the middle aisles

Coquohvan · 07/01/2020 15:30

We have a choice of Morrison’s, Asda, Sainsbury’s , Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi, lidl, M&S food hall and coop. All a drive between 15/20 mins.
Tried online shop from Sainsbury’s Asda & Morrison’s got fed up with short date on things, substitutes were very imaginative to say the least.
We live in a village which has a farm shop where we buy our meat & poultry & eggs from. Independent fruit shop for our veg and fruit.
Mainly use Waitrose & Sainsbury’s for everything else we need.
Always pop into M&S for reduced things and tend to pop them in the freezer for emergencies, as we tend to get cut of when the snow comes.

RhymingRabbit3 · 07/01/2020 15:32

No, my nearest supermarket is Waitrose and I only go there if I need something obscure or only a few things. Far too expensive for a weekly shop.

We have 4 bigger supermarkets, all about 15 minutes drive away - asda, sainsburys, morrisons and aldi. I go to asda or aldi because they're cheaper.

I think many people must be in a similar situation where there are multiple supermarkets a similar distance.

Littleroundone · 07/01/2020 15:39

I've most of the supermarkets within a 5 to 10 minute drive away apart from Waitrose not posh enough Grin. I tend to stick with Morrisons as I like the shop, nice and clean, know the staff , know my way around , easy to navigate the car park, petrol station, it's fairly reasonable & fresh fruit and veg etc.

Hate Asda as it's a huge barn of a place with empty shelves a lot of the time, parking awful but will order online from them sometimes though if it's non fresh stuff. Tesco a bit meh but do like the kids clothes from there. Lidls/aldis sometimes go there but usually end up doing a top up shop from Morrisons after being there when I do that and spend more in the long run. Plus our Aldi next to Home Bargains and come out 40 quid poorer!

WooMaWang · 07/01/2020 15:45

My nearest supermarket is a sainsbury's. But usually I go to the other Sainsbury's in the city instead because it's bigger and easier for parking. It's only about 10 minutes drive away though. There is also an Asda, a Lidl and a M&S food within walking distance of my house. I rarely go to any of them. The Asda would be my last choice out of all the easily walkable options (because it's remarkably grim in that Asda: dark, dingy, crowded).

Actually my preference would always be to shop online and get it delivered. That comes from the bigger Sainsbury's.

lilgreen · 07/01/2020 15:46

I’m in the suburbs of a large town so all the supermarkets are within easy reach. I have a Morrison’s within a 2 min drive but I drive 20 mins to an Aldi and pop into the Morrison’s if I need something Aldi doesn’t do.

BottleOfJameson · 07/01/2020 16:01

I order online. There are quite a few supermarkets (pretty much all the major ones) within easy driving distance - not much convenience difference between them so I choose based on which I prefer. It's certainly changed with circumstances too. I definitely think more carefully about where I do my Christmas shop as I tend to be prepared to pay more for better quality.

yellowallpaper · 07/01/2020 16:40

Yes I just go to what's convenient, whether it's Lidl on the way home from school, or the much more expensive, co-op which is 5 minutes from home.

BlaueLagune · 07/01/2020 16:49

I use Sainsburys for the main shop and have Sainsburys and Waitrose in the local town centre so use those for adhoc purchases in the week as I can walk there.

Tesco occasionally have things Sainsburys (and Waitrose) don't have (eg turkey gravy granules, recently).

And I go to Lidl in the next town about 3-4 times a year to bulk buy their coffee.

boredboredboredboredbored · 07/01/2020 16:53

On my doorstep I have Tesco, Aldi, Lidl & an M&S food hall. I choose to shop at Tesco. I can't stand the check out situation in Lidl or Aldi it gives me anxiety!

mencken · 07/01/2020 16:57

all my choices are in the nearest town. I drive an extra 5 mins round the one way to the Aldi, passing the Lidl and the Sainsbury.

our Lidl is expensive for some reason, occasionally I will walk back to Sainsbury for the one or two items that Aldi doesn't have. But as Aldi is cheaper and better it is a no brainer.

MrsToothyBitch · 07/01/2020 18:00

I've got Waitrose, Sainsburys, M&S and
The Co-op in walking distance and use Waitrose because it's the nearest decent sized supermarket with a decent range. I find M&S too pricey for regular food shopping and more about the ready made. I occasionally buy things that Waitrose is out of in there because it's the closest to Waitrose. I also buy party food & the odd treat in there.

Otherwise, my local Tesco is attached to the station & I use it for the odd forgotten/run out item. I try not to go in there though because it's too full of snack foods. I very occasionally use the co-op for last minute items but it's a small one, way overpriced and poor selection. Even when I lived above it I rarely used it. It's also opposite Tesco so no more convenient to use. Buy my basic toiletries between Boots, Superdrug, Savers, Wilko & Waitrose based on price and who stocks what, my water filters at Wilko (cheapest) and my laundry detergent at Savers - can walk there and it's the cheapest for the one I like.

I used to drive to my local big ASDA but stopped when I was without a car for ages. I didn't mind it and would go back for some items- it sells electricals etc- but the Waitrose is fine and I prefer not to drive if possible. There's a driveable Sainsburys too but the drive there isn't nice and it's in an awkward spot for the bus.

I don't really shop online- the dates are crap, I like to pick my own meat and the substitutions annoy me!

Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 19:29

Scotmid is closer to me but it’s too expensive and so I prefer to go to Tesco which is further away so I disagree.

ForestYeti · 07/01/2020 19:37

Depending on what I want I go to different ones

Pop2017 · 07/01/2020 19:38

I shop around. I love in the middle of nowhere.

I live 20
Minutes from a Tesco. 15 minutes from a Morrison’s and a small Sainsburys and Asda. Also an Aldi and Lidl but I don’t shop in them as I can’t buy everything I need and cba with two ships in one day. Sometimes I’ll drive a little extra to Asda. Honestly I like variety.

I can see why people use the supermarket closest but I don’t really have one close by without a drive.

I like to change it around 🤣
