To ask if anyone has ever had to drink this vile stuff?

I know this isn't really an AIBU topic, but it seems to get the most response when posting here hence my reason for doing so. I have a colonoscopy booked for the morning and I have to drink 2 litres of the most vile drink known as Moviprep. It's supposed to clear you out in order for the bowel to be completely empty for the procedure, but I just don't think I can drink it all. I have until around midnight to consume it but it's soooooo vile, it's already making me heave when I take a mouthful. I hold my nose when I sip it so I can't taste it fully, however, the last sip made me heave so much that I think it's going to come up rather than 'go downwards' to do the job it was meant for. Has anyone else ever had to drink this and if so, are there any tips on what I can do to get it down?

Can you mix it with some squash or fruit juice?

Purplerunner · 04/01/2020 18:40

I forced it down by having a swig of something more pleasant after each mouthful. Just take as much as you can manage at once, rather than sipping it as it gets it over with quicker. It is vile though, I agree!

mrsbyers · 04/01/2020 18:41

Lots of times , once you start running clear you can stop but til then try mixing it with squash and serving it ice cold - it really helps

mrsbyers · 04/01/2020 18:42

Oh and as purple says drink it as quickly as possible - do not move too far away from a toilet though

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 04/01/2020 18:42

Can you swill out your mouth first with mouthwash then drink a good amount of the moviprep so you can't taste anything but the mouthwash?

Blahblahblahnanana · 04/01/2020 18:42

It’s vile! 🤢 I had to drink it with some lemon squash in it and it was still blood awful

Blahblahblahnanana · 04/01/2020 18:43

Yep colder the better works a bit too

Minky35 · 04/01/2020 18:44

Yes I have crohns and unfortunately have to drink it regularly. My tips are:
Drink it as cold as possible
Hold your nose as you drink it
Use a big straw with cling film over top of drink (so you can’t smell it)
Mix with sprite or Lemon squash

Whatever you do, Don’t throw it up or you might not get fully cleared out and they won’t be able to see a clear bowel! Good luck OP - I know it’s revolting but this is the worst part!

Redglitter · 04/01/2020 18:46

It's absolutely rank. It was worse than the actual procedure. Do persevere though if you dont take it all they may not be able to do the procedure.

Try adding a little lemon juice.

I totally sympathise with you I really struggled with it

Yetanotherwinter · 04/01/2020 18:47

Drink it with a straw. That way it’s not all over the inside of your mouth. I’ve done this before and a straw makes it much easier. Good luck.

Lefkosia · 04/01/2020 18:55

I knew it was going to be that as soon as I read the title! I didnt manage to get all of it down but using a straw angled as far back as you can really helps - basically so you miss as many tastebuds as you can.

The good news is that this is by far the worst thing about colonoscopies imo. Good luck OP

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 18:55

Thank you for your tips, I will do my very best to get it down (and keep it down). I find it hard to believe that they can't just give you a tablet laxative which would have the same effect. I pity those who have to take it regularly because of bowel issues.

I have some lime cordial that I may try to add but it's so salty I doubt the taste would be masked enough.

Roll on tomorrow after when hopefully, I will never have to endure this again

As soon as I saw the title I knew it was this Envy

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/01/2020 18:59

el I asked to have this in preference to an enema (done at hospital for my 2nd one ...I've had 3 so far)

There was a brilliant piece online , some bloke reporting that you actually shit out food you haven't even eaten yet Grin So true .

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 18:59

mrsbyers I don't have enough time now to make it ice cold, and the instructions said to make it with room temp water so will try adding an ice cube to chill it down. Ugh, dreading going in to the kitchen now for my next sip

I guessed from the title too. Making two batches and flavouring each with a different fruit squash helps, in addition to the excellent tips above. Getting up and walking round between mouthfuls helped me.

zonkin · 04/01/2020 19:06

It is vile and I had to have it recently for a colonoscopy. I could only sip a bit at a time but made sure that I did in the timescale. If you don't consume it (and its not pleasant after effects) then the colonoscopy is a waste of time.

At the end of the day the colonoscopy is to help diagnose potential fatal illnesses. Also less fatal ones that can be cleared up quickly and easily.

Vellichor · 04/01/2020 19:07

I have had a few colonoscopies in the past and also found it hard to drink but a bit easier with some diluted juice added. I hope you don’t have to have another colonoscopy in the future but, if you do, let them know that you found it very hard to drink as they might be able to give you something else. I don’t remember the name now but one of the laxative drinks I have had was not as bad.

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 19:08

70isaLimitNotaTarget I'll have to find that article, it sounds hysterical

I add the food flavouring essence that I put in cakes- makes it a tiny bit better and the taste can be stronger than just adding squash. (Although the salty taste does not mask well 🙁) I got some gin flavoured essence last time 😁 good luck!

Daffodil55 · 04/01/2020 19:13

I have experience of Moviprep solution a couple of years ago and I would not want to go through it again. The first mouthful I thought was bearable while still sickly to taste but seeing those litre jugs waiting to go down the hatch was awful. It took me twice as long to get it all down and I did use a straw but if I had swigged large amounts I doubt it would have stayed down.

Good luck with it and no need to remind you of the effects in a few hours. Please let us know how you got on with the colonoscopy.

HariboLectar · 04/01/2020 19:14

I knew without opening the post this would be about Moviprep 🤢

Had to have it a few times, the prep is worse than the procedure (and the colonoscopy were painful due to my condition)

Good luck OP Flowers

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 19:14

I'm going to add some squash to it now to help. I'm sure I'd have trouble downing 2 litres of anything though, even if it was delicious.
I know I have to do this in order for the colonoscopy to not be a waste of time so I will try to not complain, but Jesus Christ, it's fucking horrible !!

OP posts:
Creamcakeandrhinos · 04/01/2020 19:16

I had to drink it, it was horrible. They told me to drink it with a straw but I forgot they said this until I had drunk it. Really couldn’t finish it and got told off by the nurse the next day as they said my bowel was not very clear. I had to admit I couldn’t get it all down as it was making me sick, she just said ok. I threw up after the procedure all over the bed and nurse - sort of thought “see told ya’. Would have preferred an enema but guess that’s not an option

MrsCrankypants · 04/01/2020 19:16

I had this a few weeks ago. What worked for me was using a big sports bottle rather than a glass. Then i kind of squirted it to the back of my throat and took really big gulps like I was trying to down a big drink. I found I didn't taste it so much and it went down quicker. I also added huge amounts of double concentrate squash to mask it a bit.

I found the second litre easier once I got into taking big gulps apart from having my 4 year old sat in front of me telling me I was being a really good girl and saying well done every few mins! Hmm
