To ask if anyone has ever had to drink this vile stuff?

I know this isn't really an AIBU topic, but it seems to get the most response when posting here hence my reason for doing so. I have a colonoscopy booked for the morning and I have to drink 2 litres of the most vile drink known as Moviprep. It's supposed to clear you out in order for the bowel to be completely empty for the procedure, but I just don't think I can drink it all. I have until around midnight to consume it but it's soooooo vile, it's already making me heave when I take a mouthful. I hold my nose when I sip it so I can't taste it fully, however, the last sip made me heave so much that I think it's going to come up rather than 'go downwards' to do the job it was meant for. Has anyone else ever had to drink this and if so, are there any tips on what I can do to get it down?

Don't use blackcurrant or vimto type squashes.

Thismeanswarfarin · 04/01/2020 20:32

There are alternative but all of them are nearly as vile picolax and plenvu are the alternatives but Moviprep is true mist popular.
Do not drink it with squash or juice as it can stain your colon and make the colonoscopy unsuccessful. With water only.Make sure you follow the instructions carefully and drink he recommended accompanying litre of water (more if possible ) with both rounds of the A+Bs .
Do it correctly or you risk needing a second colonoscopy.
I know it's grim but it's only a once (or I guess twice ) off really

Baileys4two · 04/01/2020 20:32

Thanks to you lovely ladies Smile I've added clear apple juice and although I'm still struggling with the sheer amount, it at least tastes much better!

Keepaddingpets · 04/01/2020 20:35

I'm always completely horrified at the amount of shit that comes out. Where the hell is it all stored? 😂😱

Baileys4two · 04/01/2020 20:35

My instructions say I can drink clear fluids including squash (not dark ones) and smooth juice for upto 2 hours before the procedure, and I have to drink an extra 500ml of fluids with each prep anyway, so might as well use it to disguise the taste!!!

slipperywhensparticus · 04/01/2020 20:37

@lljkk

Your not evil just stupid you sound about 12 I dont know of many adults who would happily choose death over moviprep

It's the salty taste making you have unfortunately, lee Evans did a sketch about moviprep as I recall my dad watched it and said it was accurate...he also said take a book like war and peace or the bible to the toilet because you might need it

MrsJBaptiste · 04/01/2020 20:38

I've got Crohns and have had a fair few colonoscopies and had to drink Picolax or Moviprep 🤢

It always takes a couple of hours to get things going, I can't believe you'll have only finished your drinks at midnight! You'll be shattered tomorrow after a night on the pot 😣

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 20:39

I've not got any apple juice Baileys4Two so am having to make do with orange squash. The only thing I've been told not to take is anything red in colour. It's helping to a degree, but now my throat is feeling raw with the volume of the salty liquid I'm trying to get through.

I still haven't shit yet nor have I had any urges to go.

It's fucking horrible. Really feel for you OP.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/01/2020 20:42

Oh and I had a Canula with some sort of drugs. Apparently I was awake but I have zero memory of the procedure.

Redglitter · 04/01/2020 20:48

Ohhh don't take any more orange juice. I was warned not to take any with it. It was basically lemon or nothing

KickAssAngel · 04/01/2020 20:49

Those preps actually draw water out from the body, so you get pretty dehydrated - were you told to drink as much as possible (things like Powerade that have minerals in) for the day beforehand?

DH just did this (Christmas Eve - he wondered how the had the time free so quickly!) and he spent the day before on clear colored liquids, as much as he could drink (no food), then the prep for the evening before, then the exam.

He slept through most of it, couldn't feel anything and felt fine as soon as he had food & drink the next day. His stomach made immensely loud rumbles for the next few days.

Mary1935 · 04/01/2020 20:51

Yes vile stuff. I just about managed it!!
Family history of bowel cancer both sides.
I hate the thick slop.
I try and see it as having a clear out - people pay good money for cholinic irrigation!!!
It could also save our life!!

Egghead68 · 04/01/2020 20:52

I had to have a double dose of Moviprep because a single dose 2 weeks earlier failed. It’s grim but it’s in a good cause. Good luck.

Dogwalks2 · 04/01/2020 20:56

I had the new one Plenvu still vile but half the volume so much easier to
Drink. Clear bowels no worry of cancer.

Baileys4two · 04/01/2020 20:57

@el1zabeth, It's had no effect on me yet either and I'm 2 hours in. I've had a few metres of my small intestines removed so I don't absorb food so well and stuff usually passes through me much quicker, so I'm surprised I'm not already suffering.

Baileys4two · 04/01/2020 20:59

The main issue I'm having is my stomach is really gurgling and struggling with the volume in it, so I feel really bloated and uncomfortable.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/01/2020 20:59

The room is fairly dark, they administer the sedative ( the canula for me was difficult because I have shoddy veins . Usually takes 3-4 attempts to canulise )

Then it's quite relaxing , you have to move a bit but it's more like someone pestering you rather than painful.
Had one without sedation, I felt the crampy bits but short lived .

Back on the ward, coffee and biscuits is heavenly Grin

Crazymaisienumber9 · 04/01/2020 21:03

Vile stuff. Heaved and gagged my way through it...vanilla flavour DISGUSTING. Told my sister who needed one that once you are peeing out your bum like you do out of your waterworks then you are good to go for the test.

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 21:03

Baileys4Two how much have you managed to drink? I've managed just 3/4 of a litre so far and still have the remaining litre to go, so I'll be up way later than I'd hoped at this rate. I'm just over 3 hours in now with zero pooing. To think I was worried that I'd be starving with not being allowed any food from 1pm today, but if offered now, I would not be able to eat a thing with all the sloshing liquid in my stomach

AlfieandAnnieRose · 04/01/2020 21:06

I didn’t have my colonoscopy at the hospital so I wasn’t offered the option of sedation unfortunately just gas and air. I was in agony! But it was found out I have a long torturous colon that’s why. And if I ever have to have one again it has to be at the hospital under sedation.
Anyway just wanted to say good luck, it’ll all be over soon! Don’t forget no liquids in the hours leading up to your appointment tomorrow , as well as no food obviously.

Baileys4two · 04/01/2020 21:12

I'm on the first prep of 1 litre, with 500ml extra fluids to be taken afterwards (although I'm using it to disguise the flavour).
Then I have to make up the next one litre pack for 6am and take it over another 2 hours along with an extra 500ml afterwards. Have to stop drinking totally 2 hrs before the procedure.

Jessbow · 04/01/2020 21:12

Hold glass with a staw in one hand, and an ice lolly/ice pole in the other and stick the lolly in as soon as you swallow

somm · 04/01/2020 21:13

I was dreading the 'Moviprep' thing because of what I'd heard but, unlike many on here, I found I could tolerate it better the more I had of it. It just started to taste like, eg Beechams cold relief powders, etc. I don't think I completed the whole lot but I'd obviously had enough for the procedure at the hospital, as they could get results. The procedure itself, and the sedation, was a whole different ball game.
