To ask if anyone has ever had to drink this vile stuff?

I know this isn't really an AIBU topic, but it seems to get the most response when posting here hence my reason for doing so. I have a colonoscopy booked for the morning and I have to drink 2 litres of the most vile drink known as Moviprep. It's supposed to clear you out in order for the bowel to be completely empty for the procedure, but I just don't think I can drink it all. I have until around midnight to consume it but it's soooooo vile, it's already making me heave when I take a mouthful. I hold my nose when I sip it so I can't taste it fully, however, the last sip made me heave so much that I think it's going to come up rather than 'go downwards' to do the job it was meant for. Has anyone else ever had to drink this and if so, are there any tips on what I can do to get it down?

Sports bottle and some cordial in helped me to get it down too. Good luck

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 19:42

recycledbottle I feel sorry for you :(

I managed hardly any of it a year or so ago. I have dysphagia due to MS and I couldn't choke the stuff down; it felt like I was drowning and I got very panicked which just made it worse. Had to cancel the procedure. People telling me to 'man up and get it down' did NOT help.

I was told I could have a 'virtual' colonoscopy but that still needed the prep, which was the main issue.

After chatting to a sympathetic radiographer I was told I could have a CT scan with contrast instead, which wasn't AS good as a colonoscopy but could be good enough to diagnose my issues and/or eliminate the nastier possibilities. Luckily it did turn out to be good enough in my case.

Surely there must be a less drastic and unpleasant way of preparing for what is already a worrying procedure.

Alpacamabags · 04/01/2020 19:45

Sports bottle and squash for me but to this day I can't drink orange and pineapple squash because I can "taste" it 🤮

Wavey123 · 04/01/2020 19:46

I found holding your nose and a sip of something like apple juice straight after worked for me, though very daunting with the amounts you have to drink and I think I drink quite a lot of water.

It will happen after about 45 mins to an hour

Quick tip: if you have a headache after the procedure, do not take ibuprofen, I made that mistake on an empty stomach and was so sick

Haffiana · 04/01/2020 19:47

If they give you the option in future - take the enema instead. Believe me, it is far easier.

ViciousJackdaw · 04/01/2020 19:47

Another one who knew this would be about Moviprep!

It's not nice stuff but you've just got to get on with it. This really is the worst part though and the procedure itself is nothing. My advice would be this: Do not fart unless you are sitting on the toilet.

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 04/01/2020 19:49

Add ice to it to make it as cold as possible...

And a straw.

The stuff is awful!!

Normally starts working within an hour or so for me, use lots and lots of barrier cream I like baby bottom butter and wet/damp wipes!

I had a colonoscopy and gastroscope in August so feel your pain. I had Klean-prep which is supposed to taste of vanilla but was so, so vile I just can not face anything vanilla flavoured now. I totally recommend chilling it, drinking through a straw and chasing with something nicer. I also sucked on a lemon wedge after each gulp (great for the teeth enamel haha). I totally DO NOT recommend this but I was supposed to consume 4 litres of the stuff but could only manage just under 2! I really thought they’d turn me away on the day as I wouldn’t be clear enough but it was fine (but I hadn’t really eaten much 3 days before there wasn’t much food in me)
The actual procedure was a breeze compared to the prep (I even managed the whole thing without any pain relief which, as a complete whimp I was so surprised). They encouraged me to watch the procedure on the screen which I didn’t want to at first but was really amazing to see the inside of your own colon! They told me there and then all was ok just had to wait for the biospy results from my gastroscope. Good luck op, it will all be over soon.

I'll be so upset if I don't shit. TMI I know, but I've already shat loads today anyway and had the smallest bit of white rice at 1pm for lunch and not had anything since.

I'm having the procedure Tuesday, I'm glad I've read this.
My question is what sedatives do they give you, my GP has prescribed diazepam, but the consultant was a bit vague about what they will give me on the day?

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 19:54

Newernwist I'm not sure what they will give re, sedatives. I'm hoping whatever it is that it's sufficient for me to not be worrying about what's going up my arse or who is looking at it

OP posts:
RhodaCamel · 04/01/2020 19:54

Newernewist They offered me a sedative, I didn’t want it as I wanted to be out of the hospital ASAP but they did put a cannula in my arm just in case I changed my mind.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 04/01/2020 19:55

DH had this not long ago.

His tips are add strong tasting squash, chill it and stay very close to the toilet.

He also recommends moist toilet paper.

If you are doing a dose now and a dose at 7am, he reckons you will be surprised in the morning that you can still produce so much shit.

A hot water bottle is useful for afterwards as you can have nasty cramps.

MrsPnut · 04/01/2020 19:56

Definitely use a straw as PP have said. Sudocrem on your bum as soon as you’ve wiped it and next time ask for citrifleet which is the best prep I have had. I have a scope once a year due to IBD and you get used to it.

Ihavenoideawhatmyusernameis · 04/01/2020 19:58

Had to do this early December! Omg! It’s vile stuff! I couldn’t finish it all (drank about 2/3 of both doses) but it still worked just fine 😁

el1zabeth · 04/01/2020 19:59

YoureAllAbunchofBastards My brief is to drink all 2 litres between 5pm and midnight. I'm some of the way through now helped by many suggestions of masking the taste and also to 'just do it'.

I look forward to the surprise of my shit production as described by your husband

Can you try holding your nose tight before you start, gulping it down, then still holding your nose tight swill out with water, then still holding your nose tight finish up with a mouth of something very thick, sticky and sweet? (such as a milkshake).

This is what I've done when drinking a large amount of something necessary but unpleasant. Holding my nose tightly from start to end really helped, I didn't taste anything.

QueenOfOversharing · 04/01/2020 20:03

I held my nose & glugged as much as I could & had something else nice ready for straight after. I've had to do it a few times.

Without wanting to sidetrack, can I please tap into the Colonoscopy wisdom on this thread?

I have to attend a colonoscopy but still waiting for more details from GP/hospital.

I am so scared of this. I have horrible piles (thank you ds2) and am generally a bit tense around medical procedures.Does it hurst a lot?

We have bowel cancer in the family and I know I must have this scan done soon. Just really worried about how long it takes and about the pain and intrusiveness of the scan. Please can anyone reassure?

If they give you the option in future - take the enema instead.
Is this an option that is available to everyone?

@Shambolical1
Is a CT scan an option to NHS patients or private patients? And what is a virtual colonoscopy?

Letticerabbit · 04/01/2020 20:05

*Does it hurt a lot?

tazzy73 · 04/01/2020 20:05

Hi,

I have to do this regularly, I have ulcerative colitis.

If needed again, make it with sprite/ 7-up. once it's a clear liquid.
Also another tip is to use a straw, helps also.

Hope you get sorted.

Tazzy.

Butterfly02 · 04/01/2020 20:05

If you mix with sugar free cordial don't use blackcurrant as it can dye your insides.
Sugar free jelly between glasses of medication.
I set myself time limits so a glass every hour.
Another tip would be pop some vasaline around your back passage stop it burning your skin.

Moviprep · 04/01/2020 20:05

Just checking...

GoGoLego · 04/01/2020 20:06

Following dm has her 2nd colonoscopy in 4 months in a couple
Of weeks and she hates drinking the stuff. Also her normal diet isn't conducive to the stuff they tell her to eat.
