Hi everyone,

This is by no means an important issue compared to many on here but I would really appreciate your thoughts!

My husband and I went sofa shopping this afternoon and have decided on a suite we like from DFS (Navonna leather recliner). We have agreed on a 3 seater and armchair. We have also agreed that the 3 seater will be a cream colour (called biscuit). But the issue is with the chair, I really love purple (as per my user name, it’s my favourite colour!) and would like the chair in damson purple. It’s going to be in the corner of the room and not in prominent view or in anyone’s immediate eye-line. I’ve set my heart on it! I know it’s not to everyone’s taste at all. But I can’t see why the sofa and chair have to be the same neutral colour.
My husband says I’m being wacky and should just stick to neutral with both the sofa and chair in the same colour ‘like everyone else does’. He just doesn’t like to be different to the norm with things like this. Although with many other things he will say I don’t care what everyone else says or does!

My view is it would make me happy and when we move house in a year or two’s time we hope to have more space and this chair may end up in a different room anyway, so what does it matter?
Plus I’m paying for the sofa & chair ...... and my husband is going to buy some new french doors for the house.
In the end we didn’t go ahead with placing an order and just can’t agree on this!
Am I being unreasonable to want a purple armchair?!

Is your decor very 'normal'?

ALLMYSmellySocks · 04/01/2020 15:57

Can you not have a more neutral colour then add purple cushions, throws etc? Or wait a year until you move house then buy a nice purple chair for upstairs? I don't think I'd like a purple chair either to be honest (but then I'm fairly boring and neutral with interior design probably because I don't have the style to get away with anything more out there).

howcomes · 04/01/2020 15:58

Get the chair (unless it's uncomfortable to sit on) worse case scenario you can put a cream coloured cushion on it to tie it together with the sofa.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 04/01/2020 15:59

I thought about a printed sofa when I last changed mine, but was worried it would date. I compromised by getting a neutral sofa and a printed armchair.

Get the armchair and some cushions in similar shades for your sofa to tie it all in.

GreenTulips · 04/01/2020 15:59

I would love a purple chair! I’ve seen quite a few about now, just waiting for the right shade to appear!

You can get nutural and purple cushions to tie it together - be brave

cece · 04/01/2020 15:59

I have no a purple chair. I love it.

SleepWarrior · 04/01/2020 16:00

Can you link to it as I think the shade of purple makes a difference? If it's Willy Wonka purple I probably wouldn't be keen to have it in my living room I'm afraid.

Gatehouse77 · 04/01/2020 16:01

Unless he'd prefer these... (if the link works)

Get the neutral chair, then jazz up with purple cushions, curtains and statement wallpaper.

YANBU to want something different.

YABU to say that because he "paid" for french doors and you are "paying" for chair that you get to choose.

It's all shared. Buy a purple pouffe to put your feet on and relax.

Patchworksack · 04/01/2020 16:01

Life is too short to have boring decor - have the purple if you love it! I have a purple (heather) sofa - love it, give not one shiny shit what anyone else thinks.

Retroflex · 04/01/2020 16:01

I don't believe that your chair needs to match your sofa, as long as it matches the colour scheme on your room. For example in a neutral toned room, a purple armchair along with a cream sofa could be "tied in" with cushions, or other fabrics such as curtains, or even artwork. However if your walls are in a bright colour such as red, green etc, it could be polarising.

AfterSchoolWorry · 04/01/2020 16:02

Purple in home decor is a pet hate of mine, so no!

Dipsydoodle · 04/01/2020 16:02

Purple chair!!!! I love statement pieces of furniture like that.

Chocolatemouse84 · 04/01/2020 16:03

I'd go with cream chair and purple accessories. I'd hate it if I didn't like a certain colour for furniture and my oh got it. He'd wanted a shiny and chrome leather settee, I hated it! In the end we agreed on a different one, every time I'd have looked at it, I'd have cringed!

Dipsydoodle · 04/01/2020 16:03

Also this makes me glad I have a DH who doesn't give a shit about the decor Grin If I pitched up with a purple chair I'm not sure he'd even notice! As long as it was comfy...

averythinline · 04/01/2020 16:04

get the coloured armchair... all matching chairs and sofas are very old fashioned in my view.... a bit of colour can really make a room..

purple is great as it can go with all sorts of neturals...you can either use it as a classic accent and maybe balance the room with similar coloured vase/lamp base or incorprate into blinds/curtains/rugs/prints

it will also feel more cosy to curl up in! - buy what you like and you are more likely to hang on to it......

HuggedTrees · 04/01/2020 16:04

We have 3sofas/chairs in our room and all a different colour. Works for us and wondered why we always used to match them! As long as the style or colours go then go for it!

HomerDancing · 04/01/2020 16:04

Sounds lovely!

DartmoorChef · 04/01/2020 16:04

I would get the matching chair, and a purple throw.
Much easier to sell if you ever want to or if you change decor

PullingMySocksUp · 04/01/2020 16:06

Get what you love. However DH needs to love it too.

We’re about to get a green velvet sofa btw.

katewhinesalot · 04/01/2020 16:06

I bought a coloured suite. It's in great condition and it was expensive. Years later I'm sick of that colour scheme. We've redecorated a couple of times since, but always around that colour - I can't bring myself to pay thousands for a new suite when ours is in such great condition and I still like the style. The colour has even been back in fashion - and out again. Wish I'd bought neutral and used colour accessories.
One chair might be a better option than the whole suite but neutral is even better.

HollowTalk · 04/01/2020 16:06

I've just looked at that range and can't see Biscuit or Damson! There's cream and plum - are they the ones you mean?

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/01/2020 16:07

Nothing wrong with a purple or mis-matched chair if you both agree on it, but choosing furniture in a shared house is like choosing a baby name - both parties have to agree on it even if it means neither gets their absolute favourite choice. You and your DP will have to compromise and find a chair you can both agree looks nice in the room, even if it’s not either of your first choices.

Rollonspringtime2020 · 04/01/2020 16:07

New purple chair and new dh?
