Hi everyone,

This is by no means an important issue compared to many on here but I would really appreciate your thoughts!

My husband and I went sofa shopping this afternoon and have decided on a suite we like from DFS (Navonna leather recliner). We have agreed on a 3 seater and armchair. We have also agreed that the 3 seater will be a cream colour (called biscuit). But the issue is with the chair, I really love purple (as per my user name, it’s my favourite colour!) and would like the chair in damson purple. It’s going to be in the corner of the room and not in prominent view or in anyone’s immediate eye-line. I’ve set my heart on it! I know it’s not to everyone’s taste at all. But I can’t see why the sofa and chair have to be the same neutral colour.
My husband says I’m being wacky and should just stick to neutral with both the sofa and chair in the same colour ‘like everyone else does’. He just doesn’t like to be different to the norm with things like this. Although with many other things he will say I don’t care what everyone else says or does!

My view is it would make me happy and when we move house in a year or two’s time we hope to have more space and this chair may end up in a different room anyway, so what does it matter?
Plus I’m paying for the sofa & chair ...... and my husband is going to buy some new french doors for the house.
In the end we didn’t go ahead with placing an order and just can’t agree on this!
Am I being unreasonable to want a purple armchair?!

@leiaskye - Thanks for the tip re: Cleanliness. I think exactly the same, the creamy coloured leather does start to look grotty after a while. I’m starting to think we need to go back and look again at all of the colours to see if we can agree on a darker colour we both like.

I love purple too so YANBU!! Tell your DH to get a bit of life about him ffsGrin

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 04/01/2020 18:13

Purple leather will look hideous. Don't do it.
A nice damson fabric would be acceptable.

SisyphusDad · 04/01/2020 18:15

Not really on topic, bit I couldn't resist Grin

I was all set for saying that it would look great but then took a look at the actual sofas in question and I think your DH is right because of the style. They aren’t velvet mix n match or fabric cottage style sofas but leather recliners and I’m sure will suit a non uniform look. Go with cushions or accessories for the purple (or even better - skip the biscuit which will just look mucky and worn early and get the plum colour anyway!)

Happy shopping!

HeyHoAO · 04/01/2020 18:17

WON’T suit. Dear God...

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 18:18

@SisyphusDad - Love this!

Get it. Life is too short to be boring. We have a bright red leather corner sofa and a bronze chair in the shape of a hand. Grin

nellyburt · 04/01/2020 18:22

Those sofas are a bit clinical I say start again and find something you love.

iolaus · 04/01/2020 18:23

I'd get them matching - but I'd get them both in the purple

Calmingvibrations · 04/01/2020 18:24

I think colour in furniture works best if you have a large space

Ffsnosexallowed · 04/01/2020 18:29

We had a bright green leather sofa - I loved it, but although it was expensive it started looking tatty after only a couple of years. Now we've got a beautiful teal velvet one. Life is too short for boring sofas.

Feelingpoorlysick · 04/01/2020 18:30

I just dont understand why he thinks his opinion matters more than yours. Why should you have to compromise all the time? He obviously never does.
The purple is a nice colour, it's not as though it's lime green or something garish.

It sounds as though he doesn't allow you to put any character into your house. I couldn't live like that.

I do think there are much nicer sofas out there, maybe you should take another look.

ZoeandChandon · 04/01/2020 18:31

Embrace the purple and ditch the cream.

BonnyConnie · 04/01/2020 18:33

That will never look good regardless of colour. So long as you can both stand the purple then go for it.

RJnomore1 · 04/01/2020 18:35

I would love a teal velvet sofa!

Op are you SURE about that entire suite, it’s quite - quite- bland!

I have a brown two seater recliner very similar in my conservatory but I wouldn’t pick that style for a living room. Live a little!

I do have a huge soft cream corner sofa in my living room and it’s now 5/6 years old and easy to clean, you need saddle soap from amazon, easy to do and comes up like new.

HannaYeah · 04/01/2020 18:38

He’s wrong about what’s normal. That might have been normal in the past but now it’s not at all. It’s boring and plain. If him understanding that would help him feel better, show him some magazine.

Usually I’m all for compromise but sounds like he’s forcing you to keep your entire home bland and boring. Dictating decorating choices when he doesn’t have any knowledge about actually decorating. That’s not compromise!

I say get the damn chair. It’s actually great and I don’t even like purple much.

MotherofDinosaurs · 04/01/2020 18:40

Get the purple chair! I'm bewildered by people who want the same (boring) stuff as everyone else. It's such a shit reason to choose anything. Choose the one you love!

QueenOfToast · 04/01/2020 18:42

Go for it. I love lots of colours. Here's my living room with purple chair, cream sofa and lurid green pouffe!

@QueenOfToast - I love your living room, it’s awesome!

I wouldn’t have matching sofas / armchairs. Looks too twee and is a bit old fashioned ( not that I’m fashion conscious, it just looks seventies.)
Eclectic makes a room interesting.
I’d go with the purple for the armchair.

Rollonspringtime2020 · 04/01/2020 18:50

Hopefully your couch will collapse and you can wrap it up and take it to the tip with dh held fast inside!!

QueenOfToast · 04/01/2020 18:55

@PurpleBee39 Thank you Smile

Atilathehunter · 04/01/2020 18:56

I love an "accent colour" whether a feature wall or a piece of furniture. Our house is all greys - concrete floor etc and we have a burnt orange velvet sofa which I think is fab albeit I'm sure not to everyone's taste.
I have friends with a purple leather Chesterfield (or looks like one anyway) and it is gorgeous. I say get the purple arm chair.

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 18:57

@Rollonspringtime2020 - Ha! 2 for the price of 1!
