Hi everyone,

This is by no means an important issue compared to many on here but I would really appreciate your thoughts!

My husband and I went sofa shopping this afternoon and have decided on a suite we like from DFS (Navonna leather recliner). We have agreed on a 3 seater and armchair. We have also agreed that the 3 seater will be a cream colour (called biscuit). But the issue is with the chair, I really love purple (as per my user name, it’s my favourite colour!) and would like the chair in damson purple. It’s going to be in the corner of the room and not in prominent view or in anyone’s immediate eye-line. I’ve set my heart on it! I know it’s not to everyone’s taste at all. But I can’t see why the sofa and chair have to be the same neutral colour.
My husband says I’m being wacky and should just stick to neutral with both the sofa and chair in the same colour ‘like everyone else does’. He just doesn’t like to be different to the norm with things like this. Although with many other things he will say I don’t care what everyone else says or does!

My view is it would make me happy and when we move house in a year or two’s time we hope to have more space and this chair may end up in a different room anyway, so what does it matter?
Plus I’m paying for the sofa & chair ...... and my husband is going to buy some new french doors for the house.
In the end we didn’t go ahead with placing an order and just can’t agree on this!
Am I being unreasonable to want a purple armchair?!

I have a striped arm chair. I bought it at the same time as my dark grey sofa and now have it in the room with my lighter grey recliners. It looks great. I live in a new build with white walls and it really makes the room! It's not bright but I did consider the one with teal stripes, just that the mustard brown and grey one was on offer. Either would be good with my neutral sofas. I also have a light teal armchair now in the room with my charcoal sofa. I love a contrasting armchair!!

AgathaVanHelsing · 04/01/2020 16:22

Get what you love, life is far to short.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/01/2020 16:24

Do it! Why does everything have to be neutral and boring these days? So boring. We have a neutral sofa and a bright yellow armchair, as well as yellow and neutral cushions. It’s brilliant and makes the room.

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 16:26

Thanks everyone for all your comments so far!

@SleepWarrior - this is the link to the armchair, the colour swatch said damson purple but the website says plum but they are quite similar. It’s a dark purple definitely not willy wonka!

The cushions and throw unfortunately won’t work for us because we don’t like having cushions in our backs and throws annoy us because they are always sliding down!

The room decor is very bland and boring. DH won’t have wallpaper so it’s just cream walls, light oak laminate floor, oak units and dark brown curtains.

Sorry link doesn’t take you to the plum chair, you can select this colour though.

Unless you have the budget to replace furniture often (ignoring the environmental impact) then I'd stick to neutral colours for furniture.

It's much cheaper to decorate, make/buy cushion covers etc than regret an expensive chair.

Also, purple is a really strong colour so it'll limit what will go with it.

FenellaVelour · 04/01/2020 16:29

It’s hardly “in your face” purple, I like it. But then I’m not really a neutrals person!

CheshireDing · 04/01/2020 16:29

The chairs and settees definitely don’t need to match your DH is wrong on that front.

As others have said a statement chair in a different colour /fabric works.

We have a dark brown settee and a good settee in the same room, looks fab.

—to cat thinks the gold settee is his—

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 16:30

@HollowTalk - I’m not sure if the swatches in the showroom are maybe slightly outdated compared to the website. I would say cream and plum are very similar to the biscuit and damson.

I would stick to a neutral colour and add purple cushions or throws. I love purple too and we've just ordered a black sofa - but I plan to buy purple throws and cushions for it instead :)

Just had a look and I don't like the two colours together but then its not going in my house

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 04/01/2020 16:36

I don’t like the style of that but do have a purple sofa and two armchairs .
Mine is in velvet with dark wooden feet and brass casters and looks awsome.

Makegoodchoices · 04/01/2020 16:36

I love my purple snuggle seat. So does everyone else!

SpeedofaSloth · 04/01/2020 16:36

We've had a brown sofa and orange chairs in the past, it was fine Smile

AbsolCatly · 04/01/2020 16:37

We bought new sofas from DHS just before Christmas and had a similar debate however I am happy with throws. We went for plain dark grey fabric and I have bought some new bright coloured throws - they don't slide very much as I have one over the seat cushions, tucked in, and one over the cushion back. They do need straightened but not every day and have the benefit of being easily washable (necessary due to the DCs)

toomuchfaster · 04/01/2020 16:37

We have purple sofas, 2 2-seater ones. Bloody love them!! Walls are white and grey, carpet and curtains are grey. Had beige previously and DH said 'just order the purple ones' as me and DD loved them. Bugger neutral, these show the dirt less than beige.

TigerOnATrain · 04/01/2020 16:39

@KnittingSister

I actually LOVE that couch. Blush

Would have to have fairly plain walls though, (and carpet,) or it would look a bit crazy!

Agree with a few other posters, both of you have to agree on a big(ish) purchase like this.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 04/01/2020 16:40

The sofas and the chair are really not to my taste and I think that shade of purple with a cream sofa will look odd. I love colour and have a beautiful green wingback chair in one room and in my living room have two neutral chesterfield style sofas and an arm chair with a colourful print, but none are recliners in dyed leather.

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2020 16:41

I'm not a big fan of purPle but a rich dark luxurious one in a plush fabric could work well, I don't think that chair does. It's not a great colour and the leather doesn't help.

I'm with your husband on this one, I don't think it works.

JMoore · 04/01/2020 16:42

Get the purple chair!

I'd never get a cream-coloured sofa though.Confused Way too bland for me. I like a bit of colour (our sofa is currently covered in throws, one black and white, one dark pink, with several colourful cushions...).

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 04/01/2020 16:43

I think Pearl and Plum or Caramel and Plum look like they would complement each other. What is the decor like? Also do your friends say you have a good eye for colour / decorating? If so you probably have better taste than DH!

SummerWhisper · 04/01/2020 16:45

It definitely works. Go for it and buy matching plum cushions to accent the bland I mean cream couch.

bridgetreilly · 04/01/2020 16:46

I love the idea of a purple armchair with a neutral sofa. But I don't think it works for that particular armchair, tbh. I would get the sofa and then get a gorgeous chair in deep purple velvet like this one.

TurduckenFucken · 04/01/2020 16:46

I’m partial to a statement chair, but I don’t think purple works in leather, sorry OP.
