Hi everyone,

This is by no means an important issue compared to many on here but I would really appreciate your thoughts!

My husband and I went sofa shopping this afternoon and have decided on a suite we like from DFS (Navonna leather recliner). We have agreed on a 3 seater and armchair. We have also agreed that the 3 seater will be a cream colour (called biscuit). But the issue is with the chair, I really love purple (as per my user name, it’s my favourite colour!) and would like the chair in damson purple. It’s going to be in the corner of the room and not in prominent view or in anyone’s immediate eye-line. I’ve set my heart on it! I know it’s not to everyone’s taste at all. But I can’t see why the sofa and chair have to be the same neutral colour.
My husband says I’m being wacky and should just stick to neutral with both the sofa and chair in the same colour ‘like everyone else does’. He just doesn’t like to be different to the norm with things like this. Although with many other things he will say I don’t care what everyone else says or does!

My view is it would make me happy and when we move house in a year or two’s time we hope to have more space and this chair may end up in a different room anyway, so what does it matter?
Plus I’m paying for the sofa & chair ...... and my husband is going to buy some new french doors for the house.
In the end we didn’t go ahead with placing an order and just can’t agree on this!
Am I being unreasonable to want a purple armchair?!

the creamy coloured leather does start to look grotty after a while

My friends cream leather sofa picked up the colour off peoples jeans, they had to have throws for people to sit on. If you don’t like throws and cushions I would definitely re think the cream.
Purple is one of my fav colours but I’m not keen on that DFS one.

ThePurpleGirl · 04/01/2020 19:09

Get the purple! But get the sofa and chair in purple - as others have said cream will look grubby in no time.

I have this exact sofa op in black and it’s not very comfy.

It’s not comfortable on the neck and the top puffiness pushes your head forward.

You need a cushion on your back at all times to stop your head being pushed forward.

We have even had guests say they can’t get comfortable on it

SashayThatWay · 04/01/2020 19:15

We have two neutral sofas and a huge bright pink arm chair. It's my non-negotiable item in our living room. About the size of a sofa, but tough. Everyone fights to sit in it, it's FABULOUS!

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 19:15

@ANiceLuxury - Thank you for telling me that. It is so difficult to tell just by sitting on them for 10 minutes or so.
I think we need to start the whole search again!

@SashayThatWay - That sounds great and just what I’m thinking, I want my own chair in the colour I love which is non negotiable!

Celebrate your good taste and purchase your purple chair
Sounds wonderful to me

pintofperrier · 04/01/2020 19:20

We've just bought a turquoise velvet sofa and a tan leather armchair to (not) match. Buy the chair!

DickDewy · 04/01/2020 19:23

Completely matchy-matchy furniture is quite dated.

Get a chair in a different colour - it's really not remotely 'wacky'.

We have one bright pink armchair in our sitting room - it's lovely.

ANiceLuxury · 04/01/2020 19:23

It was fine when we sat on it in the show room but when we had it for a few hours that’s when we started to feel it on the neck.

We have had ours 5 years and it’s still looks new (even with 2 kids) but I would stay away from this back design again

WhenYouCantRunYouCrawl · 04/01/2020 19:24

I have two purple sofas! So I say go for it Grin

JemimahLakes · 04/01/2020 19:29

"it would make me happy" every one is different of course but new furniture has never, ever made me happy

Intruiged · 04/01/2020 19:32

Neutral decor is boring! I'd love a purple chair. Next time I buy furniture it will be emerald green!

SpamChaudFroid · 04/01/2020 19:37

I have a purple velvet sofa. I'm not very keen on matching "suites" (or colour schemes in general really).

Get the purple chair - what's the worst that could happen? If you hate it jog it onto a relative or friend.

SashayThatWay · 04/01/2020 19:39

@PurpleBee39 I'm making my move while it's empty... 😁

PullingMySocksUp · 04/01/2020 19:49

I think the purple in that sofa isn’t particularly daring anyway. I don’t think I’d notice it as being not neutral.
Have you looked at more modern places like IKEA etc as well for an idea of style an colour? You might get more past your OH if you show him lots of bright ones!

upaladderagain · 04/01/2020 19:56

I've got a purple (called mulberry) sofa, and I love it. It goes with so many different colours. I've had bright green, cream, mustard yellow, pale blue and white cushions. Though not all at the same time. Walls are a pale bluey grey.

highupoverthere · 04/01/2020 20:00

Accent chairs are meant to be just that. A bit of fun.

Saying that not everyone loves purple.

bellabasset · 04/01/2020 20:12

I'm the wrong person to ask, fuchsia pink and purple remain my favourite colours - I'm in my 70's. I have a purple coat and drive a fuschia pink car. My mac is purple.

Back in the late 60's we had purple and turquoise wallpaper, which we absolutely loved, had purple carpet at one stage. So yes I would choose it as an accent colour.

OneHanded · 04/01/2020 20:51

I hate purple so it’s a major no with knobs on from me!

Shannith · 04/01/2020 21:04

Go for the purple. But then I have 3 unmatched bright armchairs and a beige sofa. Will just take a pic

Shannith · 04/01/2020 21:08

Cat is neutral colour.

I'd love a pink chair!

However as much as it would match I cannot get my head around the idea of not having a matching suite!

So I actually have a chair and it has a beautiful pink throw and cushions to match the decor. Actually handy as chair has also spent time in DS bedroom and also mine as need has arisen!
