Hi everyone,

This is by no means an important issue compared to many on here but I would really appreciate your thoughts!

My husband and I went sofa shopping this afternoon and have decided on a suite we like from DFS (Navonna leather recliner). We have agreed on a 3 seater and armchair. We have also agreed that the 3 seater will be a cream colour (called biscuit). But the issue is with the chair, I really love purple (as per my user name, it’s my favourite colour!) and would like the chair in damson purple. It’s going to be in the corner of the room and not in prominent view or in anyone’s immediate eye-line. I’ve set my heart on it! I know it’s not to everyone’s taste at all. But I can’t see why the sofa and chair have to be the same neutral colour.
My husband says I’m being wacky and should just stick to neutral with both the sofa and chair in the same colour ‘like everyone else does’. He just doesn’t like to be different to the norm with things like this. Although with many other things he will say I don’t care what everyone else says or does!

My view is it would make me happy and when we move house in a year or two’s time we hope to have more space and this chair may end up in a different room anyway, so what does it matter?
Plus I’m paying for the sofa & chair ...... and my husband is going to buy some new french doors for the house.
In the end we didn’t go ahead with placing an order and just can’t agree on this!
Am I being unreasonable to want a purple armchair?!

Funnily enough we’ve just had exactly this debate albeit between slate and charcoal - I won with slate Grin. What it came down to with us was because I absolutely loved the slate, DH preferred the charcoal but could live with either.

I personally don’t think furniture has to be all matching but I’m not a fan of those particular two together, although it is quite difficult to really judge online.

strawberry2017 · 04/01/2020 16:49

Love the idea of a feature chair! Fully intend to do something similar if we ever replace the furniture

MillicentMartha · 04/01/2020 16:49

Don’t get cream, unless you enjoy cleaning leather? My sister’s cream leather looked grotty really quickly.

Moonflower12 · 04/01/2020 16:53

Get the purple chair! Everything that exists is always better in purple....

Grasspigeons · 04/01/2020 16:54

I dont generally like matching furniture but i have had a look at the one you are considering and i dont think purple and cream work well with that design. To me, its a design that probably does look better matching. I prefer the purple to the cream colour though.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/01/2020 16:55

We have a grey fabric sofa and turquoise armchair and footstool. Our walls are green. Not shy of colour in this house after over 5 years of rental magnolia. Go for it but I would avoid a cream sofa with cream walls.

CastleCrasher · 04/01/2020 16:56

Oh the plum one is far more understated than I expected! My mil has a gorgeous multicoloured chair alongside her neutral sofas. It's just as loud as @KnittingSister linked and it's beautiful. Go for it!

Purpletigers · 04/01/2020 17:22

I have a damson / purple sofa and a biscuit coloured one in the living room . They’re about 12/13 years old now and starting to get rather worn but I’ve never not liked them . Mine are from
Alstons .
I also have a deep pink chaise longue so perhaps I’m not the best judge of interior design . Don’t rush into any decisions just yet . Mismatching furniture is lovely imo.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 04/01/2020 17:24

Oh I'd love it!

I have bright blue sofas and love them! They are the only colour in the room everything else is monochrome including the throw cushions on them.

Fully understand that's not everyone's taste, but I love it!

Purpletigers · 04/01/2020 17:26

Just read that they’re both leather . Mine are fabric . In that case I’d go for a leather sofa but a fabric chair . Coloured leather other than brown or black isn’t as appealing as fabric . Have a look on instagram or Pinterest for inspiration.

Purpletigers · 04/01/2020 17:26

If I didn’t have cats and children I’d have a forest green velvet sofa .

Boopeedoop · 04/01/2020 17:30

Purple is the best colour on the planet. Yanbu

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2020 17:30

I like a statement chair and agree with the PP who said matching suites are rather outdated now

That plum doesn’t work in leather though, I think you’d be better to get a stand-alone piece if you like plum colour

Purpletigers · 04/01/2020 17:31

I’d compromise on the chair but this sofa is gorgeous .

I love a statement chair! Although, I think it will be better in fabric. That way you can always reupholster it in a different colour fabric if you grow tired of it. Like many people said, try to tie in the purple chair with the rest of the living room. Maybe some "biscuit" colour throw or cushion on your velvet chair and some patterned purple cushions on the couch?

cakeandchampagne · 04/01/2020 17:31

Buy the purple chair!

MissMoiselle · 04/01/2020 17:31

Forgot to add that you can also use mustard with the purple/biscuit colour scheme!

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2020 17:32

Oh and @PurpleBee39 there was a thread here recently about leather chairs and how the OP had a “leather” chair that was about 30% leather and it was actually a composite instead, it got really tatty quickly

Just watch out these are proper leather

PurpleBee39 · 04/01/2020 17:32

Thanks everyone for your thoughts I really appreciate it.
DH is getting really arsey about it now, said I’m being so stupid, doesn’t care what anyone else says, saying “we should have neutral cream and that’s it”. He’s now rolled over on our clapped out sofa which is falling to bits and gone to sleep lol!

Might chat again about it tomorrow and see what he says then, he’ll probably either be even more vehemently against the idea or say let’s go for it!

Our house is soooo boring and dull. The only colour injected is with the wacky duvet covers I buy! Cream, cream and more cream otherwise!
I’d love some statement wallpaper but DH has banned it! Surely one purple chair wouldn’t be the end of the world!

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/01/2020 17:37

He's not keen on comprising, is he? You compromised with the creams walls, tell him it's his turn too.

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 04/01/2020 17:37

I'd get both in purple, will show the dirt less Smile

Failing that I don't think the chair will look odd... as others have said, maybe put purple cushions/throw on sofa and cream cushions on chair.

If I had my way everything in my house would be purple Blush

SinkGirl · 04/01/2020 17:39

Honestly, with the style of the sofa and the chair I think it would look odd if they were different colours. If you got the sofa and wanted a different colour chair, I’d go for a completely different style fabric chair.

(Although maybe I’m biased as I am not a fan of this style of sofa / chair)

milliefiori · 04/01/2020 17:39

We have a LOT of purple chairs so I'm on your side. Also, it's fashionable not to have matching suites.

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/01/2020 17:40

I think you both need to compromise. If he usually likes plain cream then purple might be too out there for him, but equally if you want a different chair to the sofa then you shouldn’t have to settle with identical cream.

I think you need to look at other chair colours that aren’t cream or purple. Maybe both of you choose your favourite two colours (that aren’t purple or cream) and see if either of you could compromise with one of the other’s choices. If not expand to top 3 etc until you can find the compromise.
