Hello,

What do you think of the policy that requires shops to ask for ID from anybody who looks like they are under the age of 25 when they buy age-restricted products?

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying. But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

What do you think?

Challenge 25 ID policy.

well, i don't know what shops you go into, but unless its a self scan (in which case, you can't pay til the ID has been ticked off on the system, so if you took it you'd be thieving) but most shops usually take items off you to scan/remove the security tag if it's booze. so how would i walk out with it if it's not in my hands?
either way, I'm glad they ask for ID. it's annoying when i'm 25 and buying ibuprofen for example, but the greater good and all that.

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/01/2020 13:27

?? What's unpleasant?

I think Challenge 25 is very sensible, as some 17yos can look 23/24.

My 15yo was challenged recently when buying a 12 rated DVD.

Stickybeaksid · 04/01/2020 13:28

Got id’d buying a cuefs knife recently. Didn’t bat an eyelid and I’m 40. Life is too short to get worked up about this.

Stickybeaksid · 04/01/2020 13:28

Cuef - chef

WineAt4pm · 04/01/2020 13:29

I love it because it means I very occasionally get ID'd at age 31, and let myself believe it's because I look 18 even though that's not true Grin

HollysBush · 04/01/2020 13:30

Why are they unpleasant?

CatToddlerUprising · 04/01/2020 13:30

Wasn’t it started in 2010/11? Too long ago to be worked up about it now

Ladylimpet · 04/01/2020 13:31

I think it's crackers. Because the legal age is 18. So, if you look 22 for example, you'd still be old enough?! Never understood it.

HideYourBabiesAndYourBeadwork · 04/01/2020 13:32

But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

Why tho?

WeirdPookah · 04/01/2020 13:32

"very unpleasant"

what are you babbling on about? find a better thing to get het up over.

ohwheniknow · 04/01/2020 13:33

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying.

No, not really.

HermioneWeasley · 04/01/2020 13:33

Yes, much better to risk selling booze, knives and cigarettes to kids

And WTF is “unpleasant” about the poster?

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2020 13:34

I'm in my 50's. Before these policies there was a lot more teens getting ran over, sexually assaulted etc because alcohol was so easy to get and there wasn't the law, around teens, being drunk in public etc.

Every off licence would have a group of young teenagers outside waiting for people to get served for them and before the campaigns, people were happy to do so.

Carrying ID isn't that difficult. Yes there's been some stupid interpretations of the policy, but it increases safety.

Unfortunately weed has taken over from alcohol, particularly for lads.

So I'm not saying things are that much better, but they'd be a lot worse if we hadn't have had changes.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 13:34

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying

Eh?

But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

Double eh?

How is it any more ‘unpleasant’ to look at than a ‘think 18/21’ policy? Are you a prematurely aged 23 yo triggered by the fact no-one ever asks? Confused

melj1213 · 04/01/2020 13:34

Have you been living under a rock?

That's the only reason I can think of that would mean that after a decade of these signs being up you only now feel the need for a thread about it.

Aragog · 04/01/2020 13:34

I don't understand why you think they're unpleasant to look at. It's just a warning sign. Nothing more. It's hardly offensive is it?!

And in most shops you can't just put the money down and walk off with the item.

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2020 13:35

Also, you can't just walk out with restricted items.

BrownSauceOfCourse · 04/01/2020 13:37

Eh? Where the heck can you just put money on the counter and walk out with age-restricted goods?

Why do you find the notices very unpleasant to look at? Confused

TheNameGames · 04/01/2020 13:41

Get a grip OP.

BMW6 · 04/01/2020 13:41

You are weird OP Hmm

needanewnamechange · 04/01/2020 13:43

Walk out , don't think so !!
Unpleasant!! What !!!

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2020 13:44

You must go to some strange shops. The policy works just fine and as PP say has been in place for years.

Not sure what's unpleasant. Confused

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/01/2020 13:45

Very strange post.

It’s fine, it protects both minors & shops.

NameChangeNugget · 04/01/2020 13:46

Works perfectly well. No idea why you’re getting so excited?

RoomR0613 · 04/01/2020 13:47

Guessing dry January isn't going well for you OP?
