Challenge 25 ID policy.

Hello,

What do you think of the policy that requires shops to ask for ID from anybody who looks like they are under the age of 25 when they buy age-restricted products?

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying. But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

What do you think?

I buy age restricted things online because I got fed of with being asked now I'm over 40.

Its not their fault though because if they get caught serving underage people they have to pay their own fine and its not a well paid job so it's not worth it.

Purpleartichoke · 04/01/2020 16:02

It’s 35 where I live and many stores have a policy of IDing everyone, even 90 year olds, to avoid issues. It’s no big deal.

cabbageking · 04/01/2020 16:05

It is about safeguarding children so in my view not a stupid idea.

SachaStark · 04/01/2020 16:06

Can’t understand people who get upset about being IDd. Just carry ID on you, you’re presumably already carrying a method of payment, or you wouldn’t be in the shop, what’s so hard?

Willow2017 · 04/01/2020 16:07

Well no because if we don't authorise it on the till it won't let us sell the alcohol. And we won't take the security thing off.
We don't hand over the alcohol until either we authorise it because you are obvioysly over 25 or see I.d. type it into the till and till confirms your age.

It's basically common sense but I am not risking breaking the law and facing the consequences because it upsets people to.be asked for I.d. if you know you look young then bring I.d. with you it's that simple.

alexdgr8 · 04/01/2020 16:07

are you a minor, OP.
most of us have seen these signs for years, hardly notice them, and agree with what they are trying to achieve.
maybe you're not old enough to appreciate that yet ?

Willow2017 · 04/01/2020 16:13

I did not have any ID and even after I challenged it, I was still refused
Once the cashier has pressed the button for requesting I.d. and it isn't produced the till will not process the sale so that's that. Just carry I.d. in future it's not a hardship.

FizzyIce · 04/01/2020 16:21

While I was id’d for crackers the other day, I was laughing with the lady at the checkout as she said about having to ID people if they buy rum and raisin ice cream as well as other things ,could you imagine how much you’d have to eat to get even the slightest buzz?
You’d have well and truly vomited by then

MamaGee09 · 04/01/2020 16:22

I’m thankful for this legislation, I work in a pub and sometimes it’s really difficult to tell who is over 18 and who aren’t, this gives us leaway to ask for ID just incase. The eldest person I’ve IDed was 26 and she was delighted! A £1000 for serving an under ager isn’t worth it!

PhoneLock · 04/01/2020 16:28

It's just as well the OP doesn't live in California.

DH got ID'd buying a bottle of wine. Made his day.

BlueCornsihPixie · 04/01/2020 16:30

It makes sense. It's a safe check to make sure people aren't sneaking through. It's unlikely someone who looks 26 is actually 17

However I have noticed recently a few shop assistants being confused. Someone refused to sell me alcohol the other day because I was under 25. Well yes but I'm over 18. Another friend mentioned they'd had the same issue, refused alcohol because they were under 25 (both with ID).

Someone else refuse to sell me ibuprofen because I looked under 25. No doubt I was over 16, just not over 25. Well I don't have to be 25.

It's only annoying when you forget your ID Grin

Willow2017 · 04/01/2020 16:33

Am still.wondering why the notices explaining Challenge 25 are "very unpleasant to.look at"?
Care to enlighten me OP?

TigerOnATrain · 04/01/2020 16:33

LOL! 😂

On a slightly different note, when I was at customs in Calais this summer, I was asked for my passport. Cheeky feckers. I was so disgusted by it, I will never visit France again! AWFUL treatment! Angry

Hello, thanks for all the responses. I know that not everyone agrees with me and that there are different perspectives on this issue. But thanks anyhow.

Your perspective is irrelevant. It's the law. Cashiers have no.choice.

Why do.you find the notices very upsetting?

You haven’t explained why you find the notices “unpleasant”.

That would be a start.

Fr0g · 04/01/2020 16:45

A £1000 for serving an under ager isn’t worth it!

A shop near me was fined for selling knives to a 17 year old who used them to stab & murder someone minutes later.
Not sure that a notice would have helped, or whether the murderer would have acted differently a few months later, but I still avoid using the store.
The more that is in place to prevent sale of knives, alcohol etc to minors the better.
(not forgetting the PP challenged on Christmas Crackers of course)

FruitcakeOfHate · 04/01/2020 16:45

I'm 50 and my forehead looks like an OS map for I never get asked for ID. But one thing that really stood out to me, not having been brought up in the UK, is how few people had ID on them when I first moved here. In Europe we all had ID cards and in N. America, too. It seemed sort of, well, backwards.

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/01/2020 16:47

I don't think the notice is unpleasant to look at, why do you think it is?

I think challenge 25 is a good idea, even though I get asked for ID occasionally it's good to know that people are actually doing their job.

LoveNote · 04/01/2020 16:48

Op has ducked out of the thread now I think! She was looking for a good bitching session about it all

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/01/2020 16:48

It also sounds like you are promoting ways around it which isn't very good.

Dustarr73 · 04/01/2020 16:56

Because the till refused to process the sale?

The till doesnt refuse the sale[unless outside licensing laws]The cashier either presses yes or no.

HariboLectar · 04/01/2020 16:56

Does Challenge 21 still exist, I was led to believe that it was Challenge 21 then if they failed that it went up to Challenge 25...

Anyway doesn't bother me, they're only doing a job by asking.

IjustMadeTheCall · 04/01/2020 16:59

@LoveNote

a good 'ld bitching session about a bloody shop poster.

Next she'll be posting a picture of sign telling owners to pick up their dog mess on a dog bin! I mean, they're just so unpleasant!

On another note I do get confused that if i'm buying a lighter in a petrol garage as well as bloody petrol why do I get ID. The fact i've just filled up my car that i'm driving means that i'm over 17 and you have to be 16 to buy petrol/lighters. On that logic I could be joyriding, and not be 16 either to legally buy petrol either.
