Challenge 25 ID policy.

Hello,

What do you think of the policy that requires shops to ask for ID from anybody who looks like they are under the age of 25 when they buy age-restricted products?

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying. But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

What do you think?

Challenge 25 ID policy.

Theres quite a few weird posts today ..

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2020 14:20

Yes, @Butchyrestingface it's that grey area and it causes problems. Because, again if the cashier thinks that the alcohol is being purchased for the minor they can refuse the sale.

I assume they wouldn't ask unless they thought the minor was just under age but I don't know.

I agree. Are the school holidays over yet?

Dearymeop · 04/01/2020 14:24

Are you a prematurely aged 23 yo triggered by the fact no-one ever asks?
Hahah! Probably!

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 14:27

Because, again if the cashier thinks that the alcohol is being purchased for the minor they can refuse the sale.

I think if the cashier is facing a £1,000 fine for supply to a minor, even the most laissez-faire will not risk it.

Very wise. I heard of one case though where a young person who was able to prove their age was refused sale on the basis they might supply their 40-something ID-less mother, standing beside them. 🙄

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2020 14:30

He's 18 next week, he can buy alcohol for the both of us and I will sit in the car. Grin

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/01/2020 14:32

What a weird post.

I'm 30 this year and still get asked, couldn't care less.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 04/01/2020 14:35

I’m in my early thirties and I love it. I get id’d a good forty percent of the time.

Except the time I had my wisdom tooth out and the lady in costcutter wouldn’t sell me painkillers, even though you’ve got to be twelve to buy them.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/01/2020 14:35

This has been around long enough that to most under 30's it's a normal part of adulthood that you carry ID if you want to purchase alcohol.

The seller can be fined, the licence holder can get an even larger fine or have their alcohol licence removed, therefore potentially lose their job.

Pardonwhat · 04/01/2020 14:37

I must admit that I can’t quite wrap my head around the policy but I don’t find it ‘unpleasant’.

AnnoyingSatsumaInMyStocking · 04/01/2020 14:42

One of my DC, 18, tried to buy a tub of brandy butter! Their 17yo sibling was with them. They both had ID, and the purchase was refused.

They stopped at another shop and the 18yo bought the brandy butter while the 17yo waited outside Xmas Smile.

SageRosemary · 04/01/2020 14:45

methinks the OP is getting restless at the end of school holidays, roll on the new term.

TreeTopTim · 04/01/2020 14:48

I agree it's a stupid policy because I never get ID'd. In my head I still look 18, in reality I probably look over 50. I am actually really somewhere in the middle 😂

Dustarr73 · 04/01/2020 14:57

I must admit that I can’t quite wrap my head around the policy but I don’t find it ‘unpleasant’.

Its to do with the fact some teenagers can look 18,but are not.So its harder for them to look 25.

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/01/2020 14:57

I work in a shop. Cigarettes are in a close cabinet behind me, you have to ask for them (at which point I ID you). Booze has to be handed to a human (at which point I ID you). There is no 'throwing down your money and walking out' anywhere in the shop.

Did you get ID'd and not have any ID on you, OP?

BackOnceAgainWithATinselHalo · 04/01/2020 15:00

What? Where are you buying age restricted items where you can fling some pence on the counter and walk out with challenge or security tags? Assume it’s a local shop Wink

These have been around for at least a decade, right?

Inferiorbeing · 04/01/2020 15:03

I'm 22 and got ID for a 15 rated DVD this morning? Does it matter?

Pardonwhat · 04/01/2020 15:08

Dustarr73

But what if one looked 26? Or was actually and very clearly at least 23/24? Why do they need ID’ing?
I get the point of it to an extent but there’s just something I can’t quite get my head around and I’m not sure how to explain it Confused

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 04/01/2020 15:20

Because the legal age is 18. So, if you look 22 for example, you'd still be old enough?!

Looking an age doesn't mean you are that age. A 17 year old could look early 20s. Doesn't make them old enough to buy alcohol.

If you look over 25, there's a good chance you're over 18. If you look early 20s, you could well be 16 or 17.

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2020 15:31

I want to know where this shop is where I can slam my fiver onto the counter and waltz off with a huge bottle of Southern Comfort completely unchallenged.

Dustarr73 · 04/01/2020 15:46

But what if one looked 26? Or was actually and very clearly at least 23/24? Why do they need ID’ing?
.
I wouldnt ID them. But i use commen sense.I only ever asked for ID if i genuinely wasnt sure.Or i seen a teenager handing money for someone else to buy it.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 04/01/2020 15:52

Wish this had been around when I was young. I didn't even get IDed when I was 14!

On the plus side self service tills think I'm young Grin

KnittingSister · 04/01/2020 15:58
