Prince George’s outfit

There’s a new royal portrait featuring the queen & her direct heirs. I know they seem to prefer traditional (to the point of twee) clothes for George, but AIBU to find his outfit odd? The shirt & trousers jar for me

I hate the photograph, either protect Charlotte and Louis from the media or refuse whilst they are children to separate them as heir and spares
I agree with this. Even the photos from the Christmas message. We seem to be seeing this more and more- photos of HM, Charles, William and George. Not only is it separating the children into 'important' and 'not important' but it looks like it's sending us common folk a message that these are our rulers for our lifetime and that of our children and grandchildren. It's not guaranteed that George will be King. They are there because we let them be there. Who knows whether George's generation or even Williams generation will tolerate them? This spate of 'lines of succession' photos seems to me that they are taking their position for granted for 4 generations.

He's wearing a very similar shirt to the one he wore for the same photo when he was 2!

I think that's why it looks so out of place, the public have seen it so often that it's now associated with him being younger. I think something like CurlyWurlyTwirly posted is much more suitable for an almost 7 year old, the jumper and shirt combination.

TabbyMumz · 04/01/2020 09:52

That shirt looks lovely on a 3 year old prince with shorts and shiny shoes. Now hes much older, it looks ridiculous.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 04/01/2020 09:55

They dress him in a way that’s wuite old fashioned for things like that (portraits, public appearances etc) to make him less recogniseable when he’s just going about his normal life - it’s a privacy and a security thing and I think it’s really sensible!

NewName73 · 04/01/2020 09:57

Watch the Crown & see how the relationship between the Queen & Princess Margaret was affected by their different future roles.

PortiaCastis · 04/01/2020 09:57

He's just 6 years old and looks cute

Helenluvsrob · 04/01/2020 09:59

Surely the photo is all about bowing to public pressure. This is the pared down royal family so the public moan less about “ spongers “ etc.

The silly outfit is surely so the kids can go to friends parties and other “ normal” kids stuff in normal clothes and be a bit less obviously different.

Mind you the photos of prince Charles in jeans when he was younger are also very silly!

LaurieMarlow · 04/01/2020 10:01

it’s a privacy and a security thing and I think it’s really sensible!

I think that’s only the most palatable of the many reasons why they dress him like this.

YeOldeTrout · 04/01/2020 10:01

I like how George is dressed. They all look great.

diddl · 04/01/2020 10:02

It's quite fascinating though-a monarch & 3 in waiting!

I agree that they need to not overdo it though.

Thatnovembernight · 04/01/2020 10:04

I didn’t think the shirt was a good choice. When you see him in other photographs he is dressed in ordinary kid clothes so I guess they save this look for formal photos.

brassbrass · 04/01/2020 10:05

Problem for me is it's not a shirt it's a blouse.

HowsAnnie · 04/01/2020 10:07

I think he looks adorable. He'd look weird dressed in trackies with a gold chain.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/01/2020 10:07

I think this is the first time I’ve seen him in long trousers.

Me too. I'm sure I read about a "rule" that royal children only wear shorts till a certain age or something?

diddl · 04/01/2020 10:10

For the "Christmas pudding" pic I would quite like to have seen them all in Christmas jumpers!

Grandmi · 04/01/2020 10:10

Yes I just commented to my daughter about his shirt!! I do agree that he should look smart but the shirt looks like a blouse and looks ridiculous. Who chooses his clothes?

EntropyRising · 04/01/2020 10:10

I always had my boys in Peter Pan collars for any kind of special occasion when they were toddlers, but they pushed back by the time they were 5 or so.

lottiedelavega · 04/01/2020 10:10

He's the future king. It's a royal portrait. He can't be dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, and he's a little to young for a suit like his dad and grandad. I think he's dressed appropriately for a portrait that will be looked at for years to come.

EntropyRising · 04/01/2020 10:11

I think the rule is shorts until 7. This is when the preps tend to shift uniform, anyway.

Nanny0gg · 04/01/2020 10:12

It's where she keeps her Gin Nan. She's never seen without it

Grin

Still looks daft in what is essentially a portrait.

Bluerussian · 04/01/2020 10:12

I saw that earlier and thought it was a good picture, I honestly didn't notice what anyone was wearing.

Prince George looks alright to me, the royals do seem to like Tartan.

Cornettoninja · 04/01/2020 10:13

I like to imagine the queen has a nice leather notebook in her handbag with her shit list in it. She needs it to hand to keep it updated.

damnthatanxiety · 04/01/2020 10:14

No other European royal dresses their kids up so weirdly. But I think Kate is VERY lacking in risk taking and original thought. She is very stuck in doing what those before her did. Giving birth at the Lindo Wing because Diana did, dressing her dc as Diana did even though that was a generation ago. It is quite telling of her personality I think. Even the Spanish royal dress their dc appropriately but not exactly the same as a generation go and they have always been very traditional. It's like she doesn't know how to do anything 'her own' way because she doesn't have one.

Notmyrealname855 · 04/01/2020 10:15

think OutwiththeOutCrowd has it - this is a uniform for george, so he knows when he’s “being royal”, to help him distinguish real life from royal life. Usually he’s in a sports tshirt and shorts in normal life... maybe K&W would dress him in more normal stuff but charles and the queen like it?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/01/2020 10:15

The outfit has been chosen with the royal self-preservation message of tradition and continuity in mind. Prince George is not even dimly aware of the PR game and why he's being told to put this sort of stuff on when on 'duty' but seems inured to it nonetheless.
