To not get the vegan meat thing.

I just don't get it. Surely if you're vegan/ vegetarian you don't want things to taste of meat which you have foresworn, so why want a fake meat taste. I just don't get the fake steak, fake bacon etc thing. Be vegan/ vegetarian or just eat meat. It's one or the other.

don't (some) bugs react to stimuli and release chemicals proving they are?

cushioncovers · 03/01/2020 17:08

So I take it that op started this thread with their goady question and then fucked off ?

elmosducks · 03/01/2020 17:50

@cushioncovers , looks that way.

So so so tiresome.

Iggypoppie · 03/01/2020 17:54

Haven't RTFT but it's mostly a case of wanting to eat the same foods your familiar with and accustomed to. E.g. lasagne, burgers are quite a UK staple so many people develop a taste for them.

QueSera · 03/01/2020 18:55

What did vegan people eat before vegan processed food? Fruit, veg, pulses, lentils? I can see that would get really boring!

In the '60s & '70s when the hippies were becoming vegan (and the amazing The Farm vegan cookbook was written), and even in the 80s/90s when I became vegan, there were no (or very few) vegan processed foods - I remember living on beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts, veg, fruit, grains etc - honestly it was absolutely fine! You can make an amazing variety of foods out of these things - stews, burgers, spreads, dips, curries, pastas etc. It's nice to have more variety available now, but before processed foods existed, vegans were doing just fine!

lilyj13 · 03/01/2020 19:07

I get why people want to give up meat and diary but my god everywhere you see now just vegan this vegan that I mean it's boring, I eat what I want to eat that's it, I have a vegan friend and all she says is cant eat this can't eat that! I don't care! Eat what you eat and that's it! Oh I miss chocolate well eat it then! I would love to not eat animals but I'm not punishing myself when I want burger that tastes better when a vegan/ veggie I'll eat it, I'm not gonna walk past a kfc and think omg I wish I could have that no point!
Of i was to become a vegan/ veggie it would be because I don't like the taste of it all not because of anything else... my opinion I'm sure everyone else has their own!

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 19:22

@lilyj13 Surely the companies are just advertising that they have vegan options so vegans know they can actually eat something from their establishment. If it's not advertised how are they supposed to know?

wishingyouluck · 03/01/2020 19:22

There is just no way the vegan diet is as destructive to the planet as the meat industry. There is a recent bbc documentary called 'Meat: A Threat to our Planet'. It is hugely eye opening and I recommend some of you watch it!

elmosducks · 03/01/2020 19:31

@lilyj13 what is boring is non-vegans telling vegans how boring vegan options, and believing that it changes anything.

lilyj13 · 03/01/2020 19:40

@elmosducks I never said that what I said was it's boring hearing vegans saying what they can or can't eat,
If your vegan eat vegan stop complaining how good meat tastes and then continue to be vegan. Everyone should eat what they want and that's it done, I eat meat that's it, your a vegan that's it! Done it's not a big achievement being a vegan sorry

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 19:47

@lilyj13 funnily enough there is actually a vegan chicken burger just launched at kfc.

elmosducks · 03/01/2020 20:02

@lilyj13 'but my god everywhere you see now just vegan this vegan that I mean it's boring'

Silly me. I must have dreamt that you wrote that.

Carry on, as you were. Apparently surrounded by complaining vegans

slipperywhensparticus · 03/01/2020 20:41

There was a vegetarian dish I used to enjoy they changed the recipe put gluten and soya in it so now I cant eat it 🤦‍♀️ vegan "quick" food makes me ill everyone tells me is should cook from scratch I should also work full time be there for my kids full time just once I would like a shortcut in my food cant do that 🤷‍♀️ still egg and chips is fast and easy

bulletjournalbilly · 03/01/2020 22:42

I just don't want to eat vegan. I want to eat meat and animal products.

Is that a crime?

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 23:01

@bulletjournalbilly What has this got to do with the original post?

DFAMA · 03/01/2020 23:22

I love meat substitutes! I don't want to eat an actual animal but don't have any problem with the taste or texture. Who are these people judging others on what they think they should be eating?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 03/01/2020 23:40

Surely the companies are just advertising that they have vegan options so vegans know they can actually eat something from their establishment. If it's not advertised how are they supposed to know?

Exactly! Although advertising a vegan product to some means "OMG, it's always being rammed down our throats, enough already!" Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 03/01/2020 23:41

I just don't want to eat vegan. I want to eat meat and animal products

Good for you, crack on then Confused

CBsDad · 03/01/2020 23:45

Do they even taste like meat though? I eat vegan sausages which taste of herbs, smoky, salty and fit well between two slices of bread. Vegan mince pie conveniently shaped for a shepherd's pie etc.

letsghostdance · 03/01/2020 23:51

@bulletjournalbilly hilarious, asking if you, the person who is in the massively more popular group, are being victimised somehow by other folk making burgers out of mushrooms. This is possibly my new favourite delusion.

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 23:59

@WotchaTalkinBoutWillis I know imagine letting people know what options they have, how throat rammy!

Mummyoftwo91 · 04/01/2020 00:02

So we can have options maybe?

CBsDad · 04/01/2020 00:55

@bulletjournalbilly not a criminal offense but if you're an animal it's probably considered one.

christmasathome · 04/01/2020 01:06

I've been vegi for almost 30 years and personally some vegi alternatives (Linda McCartney mainly) does taste too meaty for me. I like quorn, its savoury and makes a good replacement in meat recipes but my husband confirms isn't that much like the taste of meat.

However, other people like the taste and texture of meat so enjoy the alternative options available.

I don't see why it's any concern of anyone other than the people eating it.

potbellend · 04/01/2020 01:10

Oh ffs!

Ok so I'm vegan for health reasons and tend to stay away from processed food for same reasons however I sometimes maybe once a month fancy a sausage butty and treat myself to a meat free version.

I don't eat meat because it causes the biggest killers of humans but I being programmed as we are I still fancy a taste that I've grown up to enjoy.

Same argument stands for why vape when you can just smoke? Because as far as we know smoking kills and high street vaping doesn't
