To not get the vegan meat thing.

I just don't get it. Surely if you're vegan/ vegetarian you don't want things to taste of meat which you have foresworn, so why want a fake meat taste. I just don't get the fake steak, fake bacon etc thing. Be vegan/ vegetarian or just eat meat. It's one or the other.

Exactly. I don't much care what salt and additive-laden processed vegan crap people choose to buy and cook for themselves, but when I eat out I resent having these procesed vegan burgers or sausages or similar as the default vegan/vegetarian alternative.

This is a perfectly reasonable position. I think the new range of vegan foods announced this month is great and will encourage more people to eat less meat but it's counter productive if it reduces choice for people who are already vegan. Let's give vegans more choice not less.

There's such a myth about this locally sourced, free range meat. It is just not possible to feed the world with animal protein produced this way. The only way to do it is through factory farming, and I would challenge anyone to look at factory farming process and not be very uncomfortable with them.

For anyone interested in the topic, which ever side you are on, Apocalypse Cow: How Meat Killed the Planet, C4 Weds 8th January 10-11pm will be interesting watch.

You might come out of the program not agreeing but it's always good to know the arguments....

The other thing I don't understand is this need to pick holes in other people's choices.

So many people that eat meat criticise vegetarians for eating eggs as its hypocritical, or people for having a leather couch (even if it's twenty years old and they've been vegan for five) etc.

Surely doing something good imperfectly is better than not doing it at all? Would they say to someone that has taken up running that there's no point because they aren't running marathons? Or someone that runs marathons that it isn't good enough because they haven't done an ultramarathon?

Just stop with the constant criticism and picking holes and judging, and let people make their own goddamn choices!

Honest question:

I thought the problem with processed meats was the nitrates used in the processing. As far as I understand it these are not needed in veggie/soya/quorum processed food, so what is unhealthy about the latter?

Biancadelrioisback · 04/01/2020 11:35

As a meat eater, I am trying to cut down on the amount I eat, but I really, really dislike veg and lentils and am allergic to nuts. I'll always serve veg with my meal but often on the same fork as some meat or carb to hide the taste (yes I sound like a child).
For me, fake meat is a great way to accommodate my own personal taste.

I personally have no issue regarding what people choose to eat, however, when my "vegan" friends are continually criticising meat eaters for their choices, claiming the moral high ground as "vegans", whilst wearing clothing which is made of animals/animal byproducts, I find it hypocritical to be honest. I personally follow a vegetarian/vegan diet 6 days a week, however I don't feel the need to tell people that I'm something which I'm not by omitting the facts which go against what vegetarian/veganism is not.

This argument is as stupid as the idea that lesbians can't use dildos
Faux meats taste great and are a conviniant protein source
I love my beans and tofu but sometimes I can't be assed cooking them it I want to recreate something from my childhood
I'm an ethical vegan my priority is not not be apart of the inhumane cycle of breeding and murdering sentient animals
