To not get the vegan meat thing.

I just don't get it. Surely if you're vegan/ vegetarian you don't want things to taste of meat which you have foresworn, so why want a fake meat taste. I just don't get the fake steak, fake bacon etc thing. Be vegan/ vegetarian or just eat meat. It's one or the other.

@strawberrieshortcake

Iirc from other threads, @derxa is an actual farmer Grin

squeekums · 03/01/2020 15:16

Some meat eaters do want to and have reduced their meat intake though. So I don't know why you keep saying 'we'

Well round where i live i can tell you meat is still a sell out.
In our town there no pressure to the shops to increase fake meats, they just made meat section bigger.
Even the over priced local butcher does well in this town.
so "we" in my area would be pretty spot on

Sparklesocks · 03/01/2020 15:29

If you don’t get/like it, then don’t eat it or worry yourself about people who do. Piss easy!

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 15:36

@Tweedlady your argument may be valid if we are talking about imported vegetables versus local meat but you and I both know that is not what is happening in reality.

In reality the large majority of people in the UK who consume meat consume imported meant from South America and this meat is way more damaging to the environment than imported vegetables.

That is simply a fact.

I doubt even you only eat organic meat from your local farm and never eat out in restaurants or fast food places where the meat is imported 99 times out of 100.

So your comparison isn’t useful because it’s not what is happening in the real world. In the real world people are eating meat imported from all over the world which causes decimation of rainforests, makes wildlife go extinct and this emits way more CO2 emissions than an avacado ever will.

As I have already stated talking about local meat is a pointless deflection as hardly anyone only eats that.

oohnicevase · 03/01/2020 15:36

Oh ffs , this again !! 🙄🙄.. because i don't want animals slaughtered for me to live doesn't mean I don't like the Taste of it ... most vegans were brought up eating meat mr included but I hate the way we terrify and manage animals in the meat industry. Same with milk , I hate the way the cows and calves are kept / killed but I want a cup of tea.. it's not rocket science !!

elmosducks · 03/01/2020 15:36

I bloody loved meat. Really really.

And cheese.

Now I do without, and I have a very varied, tasty and delicious diet. I am very happy, my body feels better but sometimes, because I am human and we all need treats from time to time, I just want to slob out with some junk food.

I am loving this vegan movement. Ice cream last year. YES! Fake burgers, YES! I won't have them often but I am delighted to know that I have the option, and I won't be left out.

But... (and most other vegans I know agree with this) shop bought vegan cheese is vile.

Anyway... seriously, don't sweat the small stuff. There is nothing wrong with catering for a minority, I believe it's called inclusivity. And before long, no one will even bat an eyelid.

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 15:38

@FamilyOfAliens of course I am supposed to believe what people claim their profession as on mumsnet. Nobody has ever lied about that Grin.

Also I couldn’t care less if they were the most successful farmer in Britain. From their comments I can see they know nothing about the effects of livestock framing and what will happen if it stopped.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 15:39

Linda's balls are pretty tasty

😂 that's a sentence I never expected to read😂

BuntyBonus · 03/01/2020 15:43

Oh my, not this old bore again. How difficult is it to understand that people enjoy the taste and texture of meat but don’t actually want to eat meat for many different reasons. Therefore they eat faux meats. You do realize that actual animals don’t come in burger and sausage shapes therefore meat eaters don’t have exclusive rights to foods in these shapes don’t you?

PlomBear · 03/01/2020 15:58

What did vegan people eat before vegan processed food? Fruit, veg, pulses, lentils? I can see that would get really boring!

derxa · 03/01/2020 16:01

Please educate yourself in the future before you start spouting nonsense on threads. Ok then Grin

IncrediblySadToo · 03/01/2020 16:05

@BoxOfBabyCheeses

Would you ever eat the veggie burger's that "bleed" or would that be too far for you? I just don't understand who will want to buy them?!

Bleurgh. NO way. I can’t even stand the Linda McCartney food because that’s too ‘meat like’ for me. When I’m
out, I don’t order vegetarian burgers anymore either because since the push to get people to eat less meat started & vegan options became more popular/pushed/trendy the vegetarian options have become much more ‘meat like’ & I just can’t eat them.

I eat Cauldron ‘sausages’ because occasionally it’s nice to have a more compact protein and because it’s nice to have a change of texture.

I don’t generally eat Quorn because to me it’s a overly processed product, made from things that don’t sound like actual food and it makes me very bloated & ‘gassy’. If someone served it to me at their house, I’d eat it because they’d clearly have gone to the trouble of finding & buying something they thought would be acceptable & it is vegetarian.

WellErrr · 03/01/2020 16:07

In reality the large majority of people in the UK who consume meat consume imported meant from South America

Erm...not true. In actual fact the...... do you know what? I can’t be bothered to argue with stupid anymore.

Crack on.

ChippingIn · 03/01/2020 16:07

@Getitwright.

Please stop calling yourself vegetarian then eating fish!!! You’re really not helping. Just say you don’t eat meat.

VEGETARIANS DO NOT EAT FISH

IncrediblySadToo · 03/01/2020 16:09

@PlomBear. What do meat eaters eat? cows, chickens, sheep... oh I can see how that’s so much more interesting than vegetables,pulses,vegetables,fruit...

🙄🙄

IncrediblySadToo · 03/01/2020 16:10

Did I mention vegetables 🤣

PurpleDaisies · 03/01/2020 16:12

Fruit, veg, pulses, lentils? I can see that would get really boring!

If you think that’s boring, you need to learn to cook better.

SaharaRoxy · 03/01/2020 16:13

I like flavour, texture and calories. But I don't like killing animals to have those things. So my diet includes vegetables, pulses, tofu, and some meat substitutes. The huge majority of people I know that are Vegan (me included) used to eat meat, were brought up eating meat and are Vegan because they are opposed to killing animals.
People don't tend to go Vegan because they dislike the taste of meat.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:15

oh I can see how that’s so much more interesting than vegetables,pulses,vegetables,fruit...
as they eat these also, it's just a much more varied diet. Lamb and veal taste delicious, and I love crab and lobster.

I don't like rabbit though.

Tweedlady · 03/01/2020 16:24

@strawberrieshortcake

actually the majority of red meat sold in UK supermarkets is British or Irish. Less than 1% comes from
Brazil, and I could go further and find exact trade data for the whole of South America- but that would be further labouring the point that is clear to see any time you enter a supermarket. I’m not talking about nieche local supply chains that yes are out of reach for many consumers in the UK , but simply buying red meat that has been produced from Britain or Ireland, from the local supermarket. Regarding fast foodsa - Macdonald’s use 100% British and Irish beef in their products and invest heavily in developing new sustainable farming practices (check out their farm forwards programme which includes £1mill spent on looking at ways to reduce carbon emissions on beef farms), so not sure where you’re heading with that arguement?

Loosing livestock farming particularly from our hills and uplands would be catastrophic for biodiversity in these areas, hence many agri environmental schemes are now focused on paying farmers to keep livestock on these areas. Well managed grazing is integral to the successful conservation of many species including wader birds on the red list- check out RSPBs farming work in the UK for confirmation of this.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 16:24

@WellErrr heh.Grin
The not as big imports would lower if more cuts were promoted. If people re-learned how to use less desirable cuts it would lead to less need to import desirable ones. Slowcookers are perfect for this. Very cheap to run and can work with really tough and cheap cuts.
And fish! I fell in love with cooley which is super cheap and apparently very sustainable.
And bones. Why does nowhere sells bones and carcasses? Such a pain.

Talking about food poverty and difficulty to cook nutritional and filling meals on budget, I think that slowcookers should be something given to people with financial problems because it's cheap to run and can deal with super cheap ingredients like tough cuts of meat.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 16:29

I don't like rabbit though.

I love rabbitBlush Let's not forget venison and other game.

Everyone, apparently sustainable and environmentally good future are bugs.
Can vegetarians eat bugs? Can vegans? Are bugs sentient? Genuine questions. Google answers go both ways.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 16:42

Can vegetarians eat bugs? Can vegans?

of course not. Technically they could eat road kill though, they just decline to.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 16:46

@JosefKeller see I thought it's a no too, but apparently there is a discussion whether they are actually sentient or not.

Frankola · 03/01/2020 16:47

I totally agree with @PrincessPain

I'm cutting down significantly on meat because of climate change and unethical farming. However, i LOVE the taste of meat so to have a good meat substitute is great.
