AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

Nobody's forcing you to eat there. They don't want your money.

Nicknacky · 02/01/2020 19:39

They might not want to get involved in the vegan market. They are not compelled to have products for vegans.

PaprikaPringle · 02/01/2020 19:40

McDonalds wants everybody's money.

Pinkflipflop85 · 02/01/2020 19:40

Surely as a vegan though you are against the use of animal products. So why would you want to give money to a corporation that profits from animal mass produced animal products?

1Morewineplease · 02/01/2020 19:40

Not sure.
Perhaps a vegan company could fill in the gap on the fast food high street.
I’m not sure what vegans really feel about McDonalds, given that they source and cook highly processed meat.
Why would a vegan want to eat there anyway?

42isthemeaning · 02/01/2020 19:41

As a vegetarian, I have to say I think yabu a bit. I don't view McDonald's as a place to go for veggie or vegan food!

BB8sAntenna · 02/01/2020 19:43

YANBU even my nephew who works there and is not remotely vegan says it’s an absolute joke!

CardinalSin · 02/01/2020 19:43

I would be quite happy for them to attract all the vegans. As a carnivore I would never eat there, not only because of the way they treat animals (and people), but also because it tastes like shit.

Pukkatea · 02/01/2020 19:44

I think these fast food vegan options are such a gimmick. These restaurants are terrible offenders in terms of animal welfare, health and the environment, the 3 main reasons people give for going veggie or vegan. Their whole philosophy is inherently at odds with a vegan lifestyle.

CactusAndCacti · 02/01/2020 19:44

We were talking about this at work today and I too wonder why a vegan would want to go to McDonald's. As the majority of vegan's are due to ethical reasons why would they go somewhere that the whole business model is meat and they have a dubious ethical stance as well.

FaFoutis · 02/01/2020 19:45

YANBU
Reality being what it is (there is no vegan McD, all supermarkets sell apples and meat), I agree. I don't like McDonalds but my vegetarian children like the idea of it, the goujons are grim.
I didn't know about the kfc thing. It's exciting, all this change so quickly.

Tombliwho · 02/01/2020 19:45

I'm not sure McDonalds fits with the vegan ethos anyway does it? The vegans I know wouldn't support maccies.

MadamBatty · 02/01/2020 19:47

I’m a vegetarian 40 years. I don’t get vegans eating in those shite holes. Seems to go against everything you stand for

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/01/2020 19:48

Vegans deserve fast food just like the rest of us, but I cannot fathom why a vegan would want to give their hard-earned cash to McDonalds, probably one of the worst global offenders in terms of cheap meat. I actually half admire them for not jumping on the bandwagon.

Cacaca · 02/01/2020 19:48

You are being ridiculous. McDonalds is a well known burger company - why would you as a vegan even want to eat there? You moan about the vegan offering they already have - what more do you want - they are not obliged to provide vegan offerings.

Linning · 02/01/2020 19:48

Why would you eat at Mcdonalds as a vegan? you might buy a vegan meal there but ultimately your money would be used to purchase more meat?

I think vegans who eat at places who sell meat are as guilty as people who eat meat (I am a meat-eater btw), their money ends up supporting the exact same industry, except one ends up eating the end product and the other not yet one often feel ''superior'' about it than the other.

Mummyoftwo91 · 02/01/2020 19:50

I'm vegetarian and I don't like McDonald's! I'm the only veggie in the family and when we end up going there I don't like anything! Even Burger King has a halloumi burger lol

edwinbear · 02/01/2020 19:52

It’s a burger restaurant Hmm they sell beef burgers.

Onewardsup · 02/01/2020 19:52

Actually in terms of beef McDonalds have some of the highest welfare for their meat and always source locally. Chicken is always terrible welfare everywhere.

Maybe they should but with only 0.6% of the population actually being vegan they don’t really need to.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/01/2020 19:52

Why should every restaurant have cater to everyone? It's ridiculous. Eat somewhere else.

Cacaca · 02/01/2020 19:54

I don’t get why vegans expect all restaurants/food outlets to cater for them in addition to all the new vegan outlets that are opening left right and centre.

Hiphopopotamus · 02/01/2020 19:56

Bloody hell I thought it was obvious this was a fairly lighthearted post mostly moaning about how horrible those goujons are! Yes - as a vegan I do sometimes buy food from fast food places, just as I buy food from major supermarkets that also prop up the meat and dairy industry 🙄 I’m vegan mostly for environmental reasons and I think the more places that offer plant based food, the better. I was just musing earlier about how lots of companies seem to have really upped their game this year, except McDonald’s who clearly give no shits. I just thought it was a bit funny. But as you were!

Being a vegan surely entails eating healthy, ethical food. McDonald's is not in that market. YABVU Grin

user1493494961 · 02/01/2020 19:56

If I wanted vegan food, I wouldn't go to McDonald's.

FaFoutis · 02/01/2020 19:57

Where are the new vegan outlets? Are they on the M1 at midnight?
