AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

OP posts:
UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 17:42

@puzzled - that would be fine if they were sharing experience to do with the actual OP. But they're not - it's just the same old stuff whenever a vegan topic comes up.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 17:45

I missed the part where “being vegan” is a protected characteristic requiring McDonalds to offer anything for them?

FFS. Apparently you also missed the fact that no one claimed that, but also the part where some of us have been discussing the fact that they do offer a vegan option, and that it's poor in comparison to the plethora of other supermarkets and restaurants who are offering an increasing number of vegan options because the demand is there.

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 17:45

@maggie - agree.

ClappyFlappy · 03/01/2020 17:51

Why are some people being such total dicks?

I am not a vegan but plenty of people are and why shouldn’t they be catered to?

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 17:54

@softskin being a vegan actually is a protected characteristic. Aside from that, have you read the thread or even the OP? Your point has been made 100s of times. And as has been pointed out over and over that is exactly the point - the market! McDonalds have sold a vegan burger for a long time because there is a demand for it. The AIBU is about how the vegan fare has increased and improved in other fast food joints due to demand and how McDonalds doesn't do well in comparison. Should it up its game as the demand for vegan food has increased. Not should McDonalds morally provide food for vegans!!

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 17:56

@clappyflappy - from my experience any thread with the word 'vegan' brings the dicks wading in!

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 03/01/2020 17:57

Same and exactly!

Frankola · 03/01/2020 18:14

@MaggieAndHopey

I can say nothing in reply to your last excellent post really. I shall retreat...

However just a little point from my perspective. I certainly would find a preachy vegan annoying BUT it would depend on the form of protest. Some people handing out graphic leaflets - all good, I will even read it. Causing so much trouble the shop/farm has to close and accusing me of not caring about the environment = annoying.

But either way that would still fall into my view of not unexpected vegan behaviour, whereas I find the pushing for vegan foods in MacDs ....unexpected and more fitting with simply choosing a plant based lifestyle.

But you explained why a vegan might still support that in the short term I'm suprised, but I guess I now more about vegans than I did before. So thanks.

Congrats on longest thread @HiphopopotamusGrin

No. People are pushing for good vegan foods in MacDs.

NellieEllie · 03/01/2020 18:48

Vegetarian. Was vegan for 30-odd years. Wouldn’t set foot in a McDonald’s.

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 18:53

@catherine - nice post Smile

I'd be happy if they and other places actually upped their Gluten Free game..

kateandme · 03/01/2020 20:03

have you seen the advertising for the steak bake.they hav put up museums with the bakes in golden glass boxes like the crowned jewels.ent them out to ompanys in shoe boxes with a bake and a small sreen to play the advert on.
and mcdonalsd (in the uk) have very high anima welfare laws now.processed meat has been pilfered out.they have done major things.its like pople pissing on farmers.in the uk now laws for animal welfare are not the videos you see from the USA carrying cows around on cranes!

newyearnewnameagain · 03/01/2020 20:05

Will it be cooked in a separate frier? When I worked there many moons a ago fish and veggie burgers were cooked in the same section. Two other vats within the same unit for chicken. Not entirely sure how separate they were, I think when it was emptied all vats emptied, so prob linked, but separate for pieces coming off and skimming ? I wasn't in the kitchen much to be fair.

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 03/01/2020 20:17

Get over yourself, FFS!! Take a packed lunch! I live in a town without a McDonalds for 6 yrs and have managed not to starve!

Roxingaroundtheworld · 03/01/2020 20:20

I think they do need to do more tbh

HairyToity · 03/01/2020 20:22

I'm not vegan. However I try to avoid Macdonalds and other fast foods as I don't like the single use plastics. Occasionally if DH and I are both tired after work we go there with the kids, but I always feel guilty.

UndertheCedartree There is a difference between "ethical vegans" and "dietary vegans". The former try to avoid all forms of animal exploitation for example, they wouldn't wear wool and would not buy products containing honey. An ethical vegan would not knowingly consume a product containing palm oil because of the devestation caused to (for example) the habitat of orang utangs. The judge is distinguishing between ethical vegans and dietary vegans. The latter, some of whom may claim to be vegan because it is currently fashionable to do so, are not covered by this judgment. My jokey reference to McDonald's is because this thread is about McDonald's.

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 20:36

@misscockerspaniel - an 'ethical vegan' is what is commonly called 'a vegan' - a 'dietary vegan' is not a vegan and is just someone who eats 'a vegan diet' or 'a plant-based diet'.

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 20:41

@misscockerspaniel - sorry, maybe I misunderstood your point.
